      @@FrancescoCirella-dr2ct France beat Italy 2-0 in friendly pre-WC that year. Imagine France v Italy in the final. But then again, Brazil played the top teams of Europe in 1981 tour of Europe - England, West Germany, France, but 'forgot' to play Italy !

    The 82 team was the best ive seen live on the telivision , socratese directed that team , Eder,'s long range banana free kicks had us all going sideways, and zico,'s touch and vision , and balance was football as an art form.👍

      If only they'd won the 82WC, then maybe Brazilian football would've stuck with this possession style instead of adopting a more European game. It's no mistake 12 years later they won the USA WC with 4 holding midfielders and 6 foot+ defenders.

      @@davidellis5135 then again, what was the result for the win in confed cup final in 2013? feeling to secure even though that 2013-14 team was probably one of the worst brazilian teams in history. leading to the debacle in the 2014 world cup in the end. completely wrong estimation of their own limited qualites.
      when you regard this matdh from 1981 on the other hand, they would succeed in today's game with this team too even though the quality of football in general has largely improved

      @@dakota-c1h I was so gutted for Zico coming on and having he's penalty saved against France at Mexico 86, Carlos Alberto Pereira was the coach then and he didn't pick Eder, who for Athletico Meinero had been inconsistent, I was disappointed he wasn't in the squad, I thought he was an exciting footballer, he chose Cereca but he was just as inconsistent . I don't think that Brazil team in 86 had the same togetherness.

      There was a still photo shot in Shoot! magazine back in the days showing Zico sitting on the ground, and Ray Clemence and the ball in mid-air en-route to goal. Amazing photo. Was always wondering how he struck the ball.

    Bryan Robson playing at centre half the whole match and looking absolute quality against this great Brazilian side. What a player he was!

      I agree Brazil were awesome esp in the first 30 mins or so but England as you say also had players who produced class moments, Robson produced a Crossfield pass in the first half to Coppell for his cross to Withe that was awesome, Alvin Martin looking on his debut a good fit at the level, Wilkins serene along with McDermott and Rix, Coppell and Barnes busy and explosive down the flanks..Phil Neal naff...Shame Withe's shot did not go in but on this 1981 Euro tour England were the only team (France and West Germany were cut to pieces) who came near to forcing a draw against the great Brazilians..Shame Greenwood never utilised their potential..

      Yep,I never understood why didn't play as a Sweeper more often..He had the necessary skills! ( because it was only a job for certain quality players& he might not got injured as much,but he looked so comfortable there)

      @@jerryoshea3116 I suppose as he went on to score 26 goals for England it wasn't a bad idea to play him in midfield! His all-round ability was astonishing. I think he would have been world-class in at least 7 or 8 positions.

      Maradona só ganhou a copa de 1986 porque fez gol de mão irregular que todo mundo assistiu ao vivo e a cores e não fizeram nada. Quanto ao Zico sempre jogou limpo e foi vítima de seus marcadores como em 82 na Espanha no lance que o Gentile da Itália cometeu penalti e rasgou a camisa de Zico sem reação alguma da arbitragem. Na copa de 1986 enquanto Zico jogava alguns minutos no sacrifício, Maradona jogava drogado, ganhou com gols irregulares e se não fosse pego em 1990 ganharia outra copa irregular.

    Everyone footballer, every manager should be made to watch Brazil at their best, and then made to watch them again and again until they realise that THAT is how you play football. Simple one/rwo touch football with movement and vision from another world.

      Well done on tonight's result. Brazil remain the team England have the worst against in their history, having drawn 11 and won just 4 of the 27 matches between the two of them.
      Still, there have been some classic and legendary matches in that lot.

    My biggest regret and saddest moment as football fan was to see this Socrates' Brazil not lift the World Cup at the 82 and/or 86 editions! I still remember the Copa del Mundo in Spain, as I was then a young boy schooled in a catholic institution led by Spanish Marist brothers.

      .But apart from the Brilliant Brazilian Pele,Garinchz and the 1974 WC team& in 1982 great WC team& u hav had Romario,Ronaldo,Ronaldinho they're hasn't been too many others..
      And no one twists these players arms behind their backs, they leave of their own accord ( whatever their motivation)

    Com todo o respeito que merece o Falcão, a entrada dele em 1982 talvez tenha bagunçado um time pronto pra ser campeão. Paulo Isidoro era muito necessário nesse esquema. Com ele aberto pela direita o Brasil tinha amplitude e verticalidade, além de as linhas adversárias ficarem quase sempre baixas. Outro fato a se lamentar pra 82 foi o Telê não esperar pela recuperação do Reinaldo. Ele estava no auge e era naquele início de década um dos melhores atacantes do mundo. Onde o time melhorou foi na troca do Edevaldo pelo Leandro, que era um jogador fora de série.

      concordo, mas falcao estava voando tecnicamente e Tele teria dificuldades de deixa lo no banco, era um time preparado para encantar o mundo e a imprensa cobrava isso. É complicado ter que ganhar uma copa e ainda por cima ter que dar espetáculo. O futebol brasileiro, a imprensa esportiva e o publico em geral eram muito orgulhosos naqueles tempos.

      @@rodrigobrandao9559 concordo em parte, mas lembre se que cerezzo era um jogador onipresente no campo e cumpria diversas funções, embora o paulo isidoro tinha uma velocidade que outros não tinham. Na época havia 2 substituições por jogo e os treinadores as guardavam ao máximo para eventuais contusoes ou cartoes amarelos. Se fosse hoje em dia Tele poderia variar o time fantasticamente.

      Michel Platini was better. A midfield creator, genuinely two footed, and a regular goal-scorer with penalties, free-kicks and shots from outside the box. He could also get goals playing as a centre-forward and ‘ghost’ into the penalty area for headers.

    This was Santana's Brazil with Reinaldo (rather than serginho with his two left feet) ==> stronger and more balanced than they actually were in WC82. They rolled over everyone they played in this their European tour (also beating Germany and France); England did fairly well (relatively).

      @@cleightorres3841 Not a fool, just not suited to international management which is more about selection and basically a part time job, whereas club management is more about day to day involvement and motivation which is why Clough was so good at it because he was one of the best motivators of players ever. However I don't think experienced internationals would have liked being told to 'get your hair cut' or 'take your hands out of your pockets.'

    Those days Brazil with Joga Bonito and Samba.. 2014 onwards, due to scrapping off Joga Bonito and many promising young Brazilian players have gone to Europe the magical skills of Brazil has faded..
