W Germany losing to E Germany in early group stage was a blessing in disguise. They would not be able to survive 2nd round group with Brazil, Argentina and Holland.
Holland at their brightest were the most skilful side in the competition but in five of their seven matches, they looked for (and got) and early goal. Cruyff then dropped back acting as a cross between a traffic policeman and a liaison man between attack and defence and only rarely contributed any of his wide range of skills after the opening minutes. This may not have shown up on television, except perhaps in the final. This criticism of Cruyff and Co. was made to many people before the final but the general opinion was that that this was the hall-mark of a truly great side - able to score an early goal and then do only what was necessary to win. It was a theory that was shattered in the final.

Clearly, this legendary Holland team was the best over the whole tournament, but just four days after a brutal game against Brazil they seemed uninspired and sloppy in the final. In the 2nd half they had an optical advantage, but didn't outplay Germany, who simply stuck to their game plan. Germany was smart in exploiting the spaces between the Dutch lines. Check out the run by Grabowski at 46:46 into the empty space, resulting in a free kick. Germany uses that same space again at 54:50 to set up the 2-1. Three Dutch players are ball watching (Grabowski), while Bonhof sprints behind them, starting from his own half... Nobody picks him up. The first German goal was a direct result of the injury to Rijsbergen a couple of minutes before, 34:10. After the injury treatment it came on the very next German attack... The pk was an obvious Schwalbe by Holzenbein, 36:50 who publicly admitted it years later (he had done the same thing earlier in the tournament, and the ref should have known it). Even so, he shouldn't have been able to make that long run into the penalty box. Holland didn't adjust for Rijsbergen's possible lack of mobility. There is no question in my mind that Holzenbein was looking for Rijsbergen when he made that run (during the injury treatment he was standing very close to get an idea of what was going on...). Jansen realizes too late that Rijsbergen can't turn, but Haan is the one who should have been in the center compensating for the injury to Rijsbergen. It's really crazy that the Dutch left that spot in the center of defense exposed, when the injury was obviously quite serious, and he was hobbling around. Until that injury the underappreciated Rijsbergen was having a fantastic tournament, and no team had scored against this Dutch defense (although Krol did blast one high into his own net). Overath's pass to Holzenbein exposes the fact that the Dutch had too many men too high up the field. When Holzenbein receives the ball at 36:58, it's a five against four for Germany. An example of the lack of concentration by Holland. At 37:34, right before the pk, we can see van Hanegem digging up some dirt from the field; it was his habit to throw this at the ball, right before the player taking the pk shoots the ball. I've never heard of any other player doing this. He was a character. Easy chance for Rep 48:33, who could have scored three goals. 57:43 Halftime - Van Hanegem kicks the ball just out of reach of the ref, who tries to catch it. lol The Brit doesn't like it, and ends up giving .... Cruyff a yellow card. Muller, who had already tricked van Hanegem into a yellow card (after the injury to Rijsbergen), then runs over like a good little boy to hand the ball to the ref... The little mind games during the match... 2nd half. Back in those days teams didn't really sit back like Germany here (except Italians), so the widespread impression was that Holland had outplayed them. If we go by clear chances, however, a more even picture emerges. A totally free header - from a corner (!) - at 1:05:30. Again nobody picks up Bonhof. Bad communication. Best Dutch chances 1:11:25, 1:30:34 (!!), and 1:34:33 (the German commentator already counted this one). Germany had a few lucky breaks, but on the other end their disallowed goal at 1:16:22 , again set up by Grabowski, was not even close to offside. MIssing in action for large parts of the game was Johan Cruyff. He started out with a strong dribble 12:59, but really had an offday, as seen from these second half moments: Poorly timed run-in with goalie 1:08:18 Throw-in 1:10:35 Poor corner 1:13:20 Loses balance, because he expects a player in his back 1:18:12 Intercepted pass for quick counter attack 1:23:22 How often does Cruyff not control the ball, as at 1:25:41? His best 2nd half action 1:36:26 sets up Rep, who just misses the goal again (note that the ball bounces up just before he shoots; that wouldn't happen on modern pitches). By this point Beckenbauer and co are probably counting their lucky stars. Not a single Dutch player had a strong game. On Germany's side at least six or seven played very well (Grabowski, Bonhof, Maier, Muller, Beckenbauer, Overath, Breitner). Very flat performance by Holland; just no intensity. The energy-consuming high press that they had played until now was missing from this game. @@johnpacino007 The best team did lose, but they lost because Germany played it smarter. The worst player on Dutch side was Haan. Look at his defending when Holzenbein makes his run into the box. Holzenbein goes straight for Rijsbergen, on the very first German attack after Rijsbergen was injured and received treatment on the field. Haan should be closing down on Holzenbein but keeps defending space behind him to his right that doesn't matter anymore. Germany was the only team that made Holland pay for having Haan, a midfielder, at the center of defense. This game made it abundantly clear that he was not a defender. The dutch and fans love it to blame the referee in that game. Actually the ref decided 4 or 5 crucial decisions in favor of the Dutch and nevertheless they lost. 2 not given onside Goals for Germany (Bonhof and Muller in front of Jongblood in 1st half and Mullers 3-1), 2 not given penalties for Germany, 1 not given Red Card for Cruyff after his tackle on Maier.
@@kadasrichard Houness who brought down Cruyff didn't object. Vogtes who was chasing Cruyff didn't object the validity of the penalty! The only player who objected was Beckenbauer as can be seen. But his objection was calling Jack Taylor the ref: "You are an English"!! So, none of the German players who were close to the scene objected to the validity of the penalty, or that the foul happened outside the box!!
1-Cruyff tackle on Maier was a 50/50 attempt to get the ball. The ref didn't even give him a yellow card, and you think he deserved a red card?!! Hello!!! 2- Holzenbein dived to get a penalty; exactly the same way he did against Poland. But on the 2-nd half he had a valid penalty argument; so the ref called the dive a penalty, and overlooked a valid penalty for Germany in the 2-nd half, in addition to calling Muller's 2-nd valid goal as offside. You comment in a way as if the ref consciously or not was on Holland's side which is not true and conclude that despite all ref's calls for Holland they still lost. Well, Beckenbauer disagrees with you!!!! He has said objectively that his team won because of home advantage, and it is available on you tube in a clip that he is honored to receive a life time award. Holland reached the final without her 1-st choice Keeper Van Bevren who had disagreement with cruyff and didn't travel to Germany, without her rock in the center of defense Barry Houlsheff who missed the W. Cup due to injury, and a half fit Rensenbrink who got injured against Brazil and had to be subbed in the final due to the injury, whereas Germany had no injury issue in addition to playing at home soil backed by perhaps 90% of the fans, and you are ignoring all these.
Good old days when the referee sparingly used cards even when players got physical; no injury times; and there seems to be just one or two balls available in the entire stadium..!!! 🤣 🎸 ❤️
My only wish was that the world cup qualification was bigger, and teams like England missed out , when they had brilliant players at the time but should of been there in 1974. But for the miracle of Poland at Wembley
This match is a great lesson in playing fast counter attacking football & then camping back in defence for most of the match. Apart from the last twenty minutes of the first half, were the Germans played some brilliant counter attacking football, scoring twice during that time. The whole game was Holland on the offence. The Dutch with a proper great specialist striker of the Romario type, would have won this match, especially with all the chances created, in the 2nd half.

@@Reddragon-hn6ot Of course it is not possible for a team to attack all the time as there are always 11 men in different coloured shirts on the pitch with them and of course skill alone is not enough and sometimes you have to ‘fight’ for your right to play your kind of football. When the enemy has the ball, it is common sense to mark their forwards and drop back and if the opposition has an inspired spell, it may be that a good team is forced to soak up pressure for lengthy periods. But their attitude to the game becomes apparent when they regain possession of the ball. Do they hit a hopeful long pass to a lone forward hoping he will score? Or do they play the ball forward and commit five, six or seven men to attack? A game of football lasts for 90 minutes and you should expect everyone to play, attempting to set up an attack that will bring a goal EVERY TIME THEY GET THE BALL. This is the sort of football that made the game universally popular.
This is not an ordinary game this is a record of history in which west Germany couldn't even touch a ball for few minutes of game they touch the ball in a kick off after they get scored against
When you think the Dutch team weren't blessed in the looks department, then it pans onto the German goalkeeper, well fuck me, that's the stuff of knightmares lol
There were some terrible offside calls on this tournament... seems almost like the assistants were trying to help Netherlands' offside trap tactic to work.
That offside trap failed repeatedly and the assistants bailed them out. There is a similiar scene in the Dutch qualifier against Belgium. Perfectly good goal disallowed. If not Holland would have never been in the World Cup in the first place. Which would have been a shame given the great football they played.
@Gk2020 W The offside rule was different back then and netherlands was clearly the best team and deserved to play in the final, they were way better than brazil in 1974
@@thundergroundsamurai5343 Without the yellow at half time Cruyff would have been booked for that even by 70ies standarts. Vogts was booked for a similar foul on Cruyff after 3 minutes.
A classic game that should be studied. The better team lost simply because they didn't play their game. Plus silly little mistakes that add up. Like rushing to put the ball back in the game when there is no reason to do so. Especially in their own end with 7 - 8 attackers still nearby. Plus a lot of poor plays on attack. You don't get through a forest of defenders with small, telegraphed passes. You do it with individual plays. That's how they scored in the first minute. Had they done that for 90 minutes, they would have won easily. The Germans played to their strengths but they were not the better team. The Dutch lost by not deploying their superior skill and talent.
Holland at their brightest were the most skilful side in the competition but in five of their seven matches, they looked for (and got) and early goal. @@Ruda-n4h I love the Dutch football, but in this game West Germany really deseved to win. If you've seen the documentary, they tried to humiliate West Germany. At the 1974 world cup, the Netherlands appeared extraordinary with a total football game that reached the final and finally lost to West Germany, while at the 1970 world cup in Mexico Cruyff did not qualify.
There was play-acting. The Germans were diving in the box by the middle of the first half. There were two German dives on one play, including one that was after the play when a Dutch player gave a slight push of derision to a German who'd flopped moments before and then he flopped to the ground again. And the first German goal comes as a result of what looks like a dive in the box by a German player. It looked like a Holland foul in the box but the replay shows that the Dutch player's legs don't even touch the German's--or if they do, it's barely, and the German player flops for the penalty call.
After the referee blew the whistle for half-time, Van Hanegem kicked the ball hard towards him and Taylor called on him for that so Cruyff was probably defending Van Hanegem and got the yellow card for that.
@Gold Saint Virgo It happened so quickly right on the edge of the box that you can excuse the referee and I think in that in those circumstances the attacking team should get the advantage when a player deliberately trips.

The commentator is talking about the coin that the referee is going to use. It's a Rupiah coin picturing the Indonesian heraldic animal and on the other side the Javan tiger. The coin was introduced 1974 to be used for a donation campaign to the save the nature. In 1974 only 5 to 10 Javan tigers existed. As we know today, the tiger is sadly extinct now.

Exactly! But the Dutch and their total football concept, blah blah. Never scored a goal in the run of play.
@@rorybellows7621 Also, the Dutch penalty was not a penalty, that foul happened outside the box.
It was a game littered with fouls, some given and some not which needled the players.
Watching this at speed 1.25 makes them look bette because the game was so much slower back then.
Good to see diving was a thing even back in 1974
Cruyffs penalty wasn’t a dive but germanys penalty was a dive.
1:16:24 it's pure goal! No offiside!
Unfortunately VAR hasn't been invented at that time
Offside rule was different back then. Couldn't be on the same line as defenders, had to have a whole defender in front of them
@@nihongotheo4808 Pause at 1:16:26 it's clearly onside.
Negreira League 🤷🤷🤷
My only wish was that the world cup qualification was bigger, and teams like England missed out , when they had brilliant players at the time but should of been there in 1974. But for the miracle of Poland at Wembley
Love Jack Taylor waving beckenbauer away
It's in German & no Brian Moore sadly but it's not too annoying actually unlike Italian or South American commentators.. GOOOOAAAAALLLL...

1:14:51 Good ole soccer, when goalie is no.8 and playing without gloves. Not today's ballet.
Coach justin bring me here
This match is a great lesson in playing fast counter attacking football & then camping back in defence for most of the match.
Apart from the last twenty minutes of the first half, were the Germans played some brilliant counter attacking football, scoring twice during that time. The whole game was Holland on the offence.
The Dutch with a proper great specialist striker of the Romario type, would have won this match, especially with all the chances created, in the 2nd half.
john pacino agreed if they had Romario up front they would have won
What did you expect Germany to do? They were 2-1 ahead in the half time, of course they would defend, it's a world cup final you know.
@@chrisbennett606 Holland at their brightest were the most skilful side in the competition but in five of their seven matches, they looked for (and got) and early goal. Cruyff then dropped back and only rarely contributed any of his wide range of skills after the opening minutes.
This may not have shown up on television, except perhaps in the final. This criticism of Cruyff and Co. was made to many people before the final but the general opinion was that that this was the hall-mark of a truly great side - able to score an early goal and then do only what was necessary to win. It was a theory that was shattered in the final.
حلوة اللعبه رغم صارله 46 سنه ... من بغداد
This is not an ordinary game this is a record of history in which west Germany couldn't even touch a ball for few minutes of game they touch the ball in a kick off after they get scored against
Legend!!
When you think the Dutch team weren't blessed in the looks department, then it pans onto the German goalkeeper, well fuck me, that's the stuff of knightmares lol
What a game attacks,. Counter attacks super
@Gk2020 W The offside rule was different back then and netherlands was clearly the best team and deserved to play in the final, they were way better than brazil in 1974
1:08:19 second yellow card for Cruyff--->should have been a Sent Off
That's right!
Not by the rules of those days. Look at all the hard tackles that were shrugged off, that would be yellow or even red today.
Thunderground Samurai - exactly... that was football in those days. No fuzz about it. 😄
@@thundergroundsamurai5343
Without the yellow at half time Cruyff would have been booked for that even by 70ies standarts. Vogts was booked for a similar foul on Cruyff after 3 minutes.

A classic game that should be studied.
The better team lost simply because they didn't play their game.
Plus silly little mistakes that add up. Like rushing to put the ball back in the game when there is no reason to do so. Especially in their own end with
7 - 8 attackers still nearby.
@@Ruda-n4h I love the Dutch football, but in this game West Germany really deseved to win. If you've seen the documentary, they tried to humiliate West Germany. So many wrong decision made by the referee in this game, the most dissapointed one, is when the Muller scored a legal goal in the second half. Really bad offside callling.
The better team was W Germany and they won the match. What made the Netherlands better? Please explain.

Look! West Germany do not touch the ball from the kick-off until the first goal.
Look! Holland fails to win the Final!.
Look! Germany wins the world cup.
At the 1974 world cup, the Netherlands appeared extraordinary with a total football game that reached the final and finally lost to West Germany, while at the 1970 world cup in Mexico Cruyff did not qualify.
All men playing football, no play acting though those hard tackles
There was play-acting. The Germans were diving in the box by the middle of the first half. There were two German dives on one play, including one that was after the play when a Dutch player gave a slight push of derision to a German who'd flopped moments before and then he flopped to the ground again. And the first German goal comes as a result of what looks like a dive in the box by a German player. It looked like a Holland foul in the box but the replay shows that the Dutch player's legs don't even touch the German's--or if they do, it's barely, and the German player flops for the penalty call.
3-4-3 (total football) vs pragmatics German's way of football..

Both penalty awards looked correct to me. What was Cryuff arguing about at half-time?
Probably not getting the treatment he was used to.
After the referee blew the whistle for half-time, Van Hanegem kicked the ball hard towards him and Taylor called on him for that so Cruyff was probably defending Van Hanegem and got the yellow card for that.
@Gold Saint Virgo Inside.
@@Ruda-n4h 1:16:24 legal goal for West Germany, no offside at all.
