The Ritual Monster Explored Jötunn Moder

  • today were going to be taking a look at the creature from a film I reviewed sometime ago, the ritual. Which is based on the novella of the same name.
Its a fantastic movie and one that you really should watch, its not your typical slasher horror film, but one that slowly grows with atmosphere and a sense of unease, with a stalking creature.
That creature, the moder, is what were going to be looking at today.
So of course, full spoilers for the ritual, and the monster of the movie.
The creature itself is known as the moder, or, simple, the creature, its referred to as a god, an ancient, one of the jötunn and a bastard son of loki.
The female cultist continues to state that they do not say its name, but they worship it, it keeps them there and it lives them beyond a natural life.
No more pain. No more death.
To worship it and enter into the cult, you must undergo a ritual. You either kneel before the moder, or it will hang you from one of the trees.

It basically batmans people at every chance (stalking and picking them off and dragging them into the darkness) but yeah since he was marked and the last person who basically believed in the monster. It couldn't risk killing him. The lovecraft monsters work in away where they are super hard to kill but losing faith in them makes them weak and eventually disappear. It was desperate for someone to worship it thats take a look at how it killed the other marked and everyone else. But I feel like even if he wasn't marked he it still would've let him live cuz he was the only one there

Actually Mr. H, Loki is not the father of the Jotuns. That would be Ymir, and after he was slain by Odin, Vili and Vé, from his blood would come a great deluge and the last remaning Jotun would be Bergelmir, grandson of Ymir, son of Thrudgelmir. With his wife, all later Jotuns would be of his line. The line of Bergelmir.

She, not he. I am certain that the monster is female. 'Moder' is literary just the Swedish word for "mother", it also makes sense in the narrative as the creature/monster gives life (eg. elongated lifespan) to the human cultists. I believe that they see her/it as a form of mother, a giver of life, in their own twisted way. Best regards from a native swede 🇸🇪

Such a fabulous, original movie and novella. There are a great many people who still believe the old Norse gods and legends, as well as other legends as existent truth, and they could all be based on fact for all we know, it is unprovable. As a student of history and folklore, I have no reason to doubt the stories and many of the creatures are seen around the world to this day.
Regardless, I thought the overall design of this film and it's pacing did it a great service, the characters were complicated and real. And it's modern setting helped it to distance itself from other historical media made today.

Stunning and excellent film. Monsters, creatures and Gods are still witnessed and seen by people and there is some photographic and video evidence etc that is debated and there are a great many people in northern Europe who worship and believe in the old gods, despite the vast majority of northern Europeans being strict Christians. So far as anyone knows there could be many Gods and a world tree outside the universe, there is no way to know. There is a famous but debated 1940s photo taken from survivors from a downed military plane or something , that shows a massive creature looking at them over the tree tops in the relatively same region as the film. It resembles a nordic troll and many think it is genuine, who knows.
I loved the fabulous design of the god Moder, The other characters and the situation was believable and excellently written. I loved the bookwhich gives more insight into the characters, and hows the deep divide between the foursome And Moder skillfully manipulated the foursome, it is implied that the hanging corpses were left specifically for them to find. I wonder if it was Loki that imprisoned Moder and the questions remain, why hasn't Moder beeen able to free itself, it is clearly of great power. And does Moder offer passersby 'gifts' in order to make them stay. Was it trying to do this to Luke specifically because it had chosen him.

Stuff like this is why I love your channel! I would love to see some sort of sequel or spiritual successor to this film. Something that further explores the Jotunn that inhabit our world and their ties to Norse mythology. One of the things I love about these kind of movies is that it makes you think, if the Moder is real, then what other creatures/Gods are real too?

I liked this movie they tried something different they didn’t just go for ohh people are gonna die so scary or another one of those movies about blocking one of your senses like quiet place or silence they actually went for something original teaching us about mythology it had great monster design that was completely original and they didn’t make it all monster instead they gave it the human hands and intelligence to humanize it and plus they even did something horror movies almost never do they gave us some exposition on the monster and his origin he’s not killing just because he is angry at Loki for abandoning him nice film bruh
