my dad and i have set fence post like this for years. we never add water, just let the moisture from the ground set it. so much easier then pre-mixing it...
Another approach is to fill the hole with water first, then pour in the concrete mix. The mix drops to the bottom of the hole and water stays on top. This assures full hydration of the cement. With a little practice you can estimate the right amount of water so that there is no overflow.
Glad you left the part in about which way North was......that let’s us know this channel is the real deal......our ground is wet enough we don’t premix our concrete either.....that is why the humidity is so bad in Alabama our ground holds moisture.
Thanks for the video and advice. My husband and I have made it our goal to set fences on our 5 acres and get our first goats by the end of 2019 so your video comes just in the nick of time. Keep up the great work Daniel, looking forward to the next video.
We have two strands of hot wire on our buck pen. One at the top and one in the middle. The one in middle will help keep anything you put in there off your fence. Our buck pen fence is goat wire . Our hot wire is on 10 joules charger . We don’t have any problems with any goat getting close to the fence.
Have even stacked bags of Quikrete and watered the bag very well and then it rained on them and they hardened into a nice little retention wall and then we remove the bags
It's also much easier to keep your posts aligned and plumb if you use the dry mix. I've used dry mix since 88. Trying to catch up on older posts since you can't post enough to keep me going day to day ! Lol, love your channel !
Thanks for the fencing update. I have lots of fence work to do myself. We have had sooooo much rain, the ground squishes when you walk on it! I have an idea about what the mystery animal/animals are too :) **HUGS & PRAYERS** & HAPPY NEW YEAR from Kelly & critters at Piney Haven.

Hey Daniel I did not know that you were in Oklahoma state trooper. That is so freaking awesome. I just retired in March 2019 after 30 years as a Missouri state trooper. I feel like now that I know that you were a trooper that I have some kind of a bond or relationship with you I love watching your videos thanks for what you did during your career. Mark
Great video. Your help acts like mine sometimes. I just usually dump a little water with concrete mix in the hole with the post also , I have a interesting video about how quick some of my post holes filled half full within minutes of being dug. I have nine acres too fence when I get a chance. I have 410 tee post 22 rolls of barbed wire and 8ea 330' of Goat fencing. Most of my corner post are used Cross ties that are repurposed from the Railroads, But I have welded a number of the intersecting corners out of oil field drill stem pipe.
Yep it will work that way, I've seen it done plenty of times. But the most unique way of using the old dug back out of the ground concrete, that was poured in this fashion, that I've ever seen.........landscape edging! A friend of mine bought property with some existing fencing that could no longer serve that purpose. So they dug up every one of the posts and removed the visible pipe. To my amazement the shapes and sizes were more natural looking than one would imagine, and they looked even better set in the landscape plans! His hard work paid off! Lol. Tfs, God bless!
I don't know I'm guessing Llamas, or donkey will be in that new fenced area, I'm probably wrong on both of them!! you teasing Weston about texting his girlfriend was funny!! Happy New Year to you and your precious family!!

We don’t premix the concrete for that kind of project either, we do put some sand down in the hole first, not much. I agree pipe is way better than wood too. We have termites up the ying yang here in CA.
Cool fence project! Well at least your helpers showed up lol. Really like the homestead projects when you can reuse or re purpose items you already have. Plus it helps clean up! Looking forward to seeing the progress/end result. Excellent job in 2018 Arms! :-)
After you've added the dry mix and the water do you always tamp the mixture some with a stick or pole, like shown, to mix it some? And if it ends up below grade do you top it off with soil, or more concrete?
Yeah, you're right, metal lasts longer than wood, even old telephone poles. Now, what I want to know is, how do you run fence on a hill? That's my dilemma. Just an FYI, I will be making a major announcement on my channel in the morning.

I never even put water in the hole. I live near the lake and there is enough water in the ground to set the concrete.
Ask them if they ever heard of winter clothes.

never concrete in the bottom of the hole, place some gravel there so can prolong life by draining. then above that much controversy :)
