- There are two Apple Pencils. Apple Pencil 1st generation and 2nd generation. But not all iPads support the Apple Pencil. Below is the list of iPads that are compatible with Apple Pencil 1 and Apple Pencil 2.
These iPads are compatible with the Apple Pencil 1st Gen.

• The iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation (released in June 2017)

You can use Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with these iPad models:
iPad Air (4th generation)
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later

I have an ipad pro 10.5 and apple pencil first generation but stayed because of your voice. It was funny because the charger for the apple pencil was in the box for two years before I knew it was even in there lol. I was so mad when I discovered that. Great video.

I have an Apple Pencil 1st gen and I’m trying to connect to my IPad 7th Gen. The pair button comes up but if I don’t press it quickly the option goes away. Once it is “Connected” if I take the pencil out it immediately says “Not Connected” and I cant use it. It also wont charge and It hasn’t been used before and I haven’t even had it for a year yet. It cost me a lot so I’m not sure what is happening if I can get some advice would be helpful!

I bought an Apple Pencil 1st gen for my 7th gen iPad but it won’t connect. On the box of the Apple Pencil it says that it is for iPad Pro. This has confused me as some websites say that it should work with a 7th gen iPad. Is there a difference plus how can you tell if it will work with a 7th gen iPad before I purchase another? Would really appreciate some advice, thank you 👍

Only the 1st gen will work for the 8th gen ipad. The 2nd gen will not.

Wait a minute there's no iPad air 9th gen. The latest iPad Air is 5th gen. So maybe what you have is iPad 9th gen (not ipad air). The regular iPad 9th gen is only compatible with apple pencil 1st gen.

The Apple pencil 1 doesn't stick because it doesn't have magnets on the side.

The iPad Air 4 is pretty much a cheaper iPad Pro. It uses the Apple pencil 2 (and even the magic keyboard for ipad pro).

Need to edit my previous answer. Apple pencil 1st gen was only compatible with iPad Pro untill 2018. But the iPad 5th gen was launched in 2017. Apple pencil compatibility came to the iPad series as from iPad 6th gen which arrived in 2018. So no it won't won't work with iPad 5th gen

Nebaa none of the Apple stores are open near me. So I’m selling it online and ordering a new one although I really recommend the 2nd gen it’s has some cool features.

Sorry I just realized I made a mistake here. iPad Air 2nd gen is not compatible with the Apple penci. iPad Air 3 uses Apple Penil 1. iPad Air 4 uses Apple Pencil 2.

The magnets you are referring to are probably for connecting the keyboard instead. And no, it would not work with the Apple pencil 2. You can only use the Apple pencil 1.
