- How to play Minecraft Java with friends in! This PC tutorial walks you through setting up your own Minecraft world, and how to allow your friends to join it and play Minecraft with you, by setting it open to LAN and turning it to Multiplayer. Updated for 1.21.1!

Steps: First, load up Minecraft and join into a singleplayer world. Then, open the pause menu and click "Open to LAN", and select whatever settings you want your friend to join with in your single player game.
Copy the 5-digit number that you will get in game chat, go to your terminal and type in "ipconfig" and find your IPV4 address.
On your friend's Minecraft, tell them to go to the Multiplayer tab, where your game might show up for them to join. Otherwise, tell them to go to "Direct Connect" at the bottom, paste in your IPV4 address, then a colon, and then the 5-digit LAN number you got in chat.
Example: 192.168.1.40:65535 (Your numbers will probably be different). Then they can click join, and now you can play together in the same Minecraft world!
These steps work for all versions of Minecraft, as long as you and your friend are using the same version! The video shows me using version 1.20, but you can use whatever version you want your Minecraft world to be, including the current version of Minecraft, 1.21.1

you need to be connected to the same connection meaning you more than likely have to be in the same house to play together

Lan means just same network and don't think it is used for far away. Just looked it up and it's called Local Area Network which means have be in same area like same house.
does it work with modpacks like in a curseforge world?
Yep, just make sure that both the host and the other player have the same mods installed

Your IP-Adress counts as the ip for the world and the port is the Access your friend needs to join the world. Only downside to not using a traditional server is that you have to be logged in the world so that your friend can join, because otherwise the „server“ is not technically running.

I know this is late but my friend lives like 5 states away so could i do this or is lan (aka local) just not going to work, cause technically we are not local.

I created a java server version 1.6.1 windows and my bf has the same version 1.6.1 he used MAC and he can't connect to my server. It times out. I opened ports:port forwarded on my router for Minecraft and opened firewall on my laptop but it does not work what could it be.

does this work regardless of distance? lan is usually for short range distances and this video doesn't really say much about that topic, and there are some methods of doing this but for longer distances with port-forwarding stuff but it doesn't look like much of that is happening here

My issue is that the sever is showing up on my freinds computer under local networks without me having to enter the information, but when they try to join the world it says that it's timing out with no other information. I tried turning off the firewall and it still had the same issue. Do you know why that might be?

Do you have to be using the same wifi to do this?
Yes. If you follow the tutorial you can play only with people connected to the same network. To play with external people you may need to do port forwarding on your router, or you can try making a VPN, or else you may try some programs to allow your friends to join even if not on the same network (though these programs may have some limitations, if you play only with a few people it should be fine)

If you're not a fan of going inside of the terminal, you can also go into your internet settings, and find the IP address.

The video title is misleading. This is how to play with friends in the same house, connected to the same router/wifi. LAN stands for Local Area Network, aka your home router/wifi.

I did everything as shown in the video, but my friend still couldn’t join me. We are in different countries but we really want to play together. Yesterday we tried for a long time to join To each other but nothing worked out.
This tutorial only allows people connected to the same network to join (if your friends were connected to the same Wifi it would work just fine). To allow external people to join you should do port forwarding on your router. Other methods are: setting up a VPN between you and your friends (both you and your friends have to be connected or have the VPN programs), or use some programs that allow friends to join without port forwarding (only the host - you - have to use the program. the programs may have some limitations, but as long as you play with only a few people it should be fine)
