    Old school blowers on modern fuel-injected engines like this is pretty much mirroring what the Germans did with their aircraft engines during WWII, and those worked stupendously well when they weren't starved for strategic resources (specifically high-octane fuels) like what happened later in the war.
    That's why the Germans were so interested in making air-worthy Diesel engines by the way. By that point in the war, the Allied forces had pretty much cut-off German access to high quality and/or highly refined petroleum products, so they tackled the problem with multiple solutions. Diesel engines for almost every application was just one of those solutions.
    Another solution was that they started making synthetic liquid fuels from coal and natural gas instead of crude oil. As far as I know, that's the first time any plans were made for large-scale production of synthetic petroleum products, and I'm relatively sure that research and development work done to enable that during WWII was part of the science used in order to develop modern synthetic motor oils.
    The only reason we don't use the same processes to make liquid fuels for internal combustion engines is that it costs more to do that than it does to just distill and refine crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, etc. I bet it would only take maybe 10 years to get refineries switched over to making synthetic fuels from natural gas and coal instead of crude oil if the crude oil supplies were ever cut off suddenly or not-so-suddenly.

    Not my first comment but it’s great to be giving all the measurements and spec’s. And learning about the LS upgrades because the only American V8s I have built were for Cup cars. I have a specialized shop and just work on BMWS and I still will go over to the race shop and use the equipment in the motor room to do stuff to the cars I’m fixing. When I worked at Jimmy’s I mainly did engine assembly and dyno them. I stayed in racing from 1994-1999. I had a great side business of working on BMWs when I worked there. After I got enough to build my shop I quit the racing world. I have tinnitus from being around all those screaming motors, only time we wore hearing protection was when wearing a head set when the car was on fire track. I can’t believe we were that dumb because all the old timers were usually def in 1 ear from tuneing on a race car. Now I’m in my 40s and ears ring like a bell.

    Might of been mentioned but shouldn't a belt tensioner push inwards after the blower pulley? Usually tensioners don't ride on the belt's teeth. They ride on the flat side of the belt as it is smooth. The current setup might also shake the belt even more by riding in the teeth and possibly cause premature wear.

    Airboat seems like a perfect place to use turbo's rather than Roots blower. Propellers work most efficiently in a narrow rpm band where turbo's would be most happy to run....and the instant response from the Roots won't be as significant as with a car. Turbo lag wouldn't matter and they'd make more power at less boost with cooler intake temps. But I understand the owner wanted the visual impact of the Roots...and he got what he wanted in spades! One question: How long is that blower belt going to last flapping around like that?

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets 2 года назад

      An air boat absolutely needs the instant throttle response that a roots blower gives. Turbo lag would SUCK on an air boat.

    BDS is great for an old school 8/71. The money is on The Blower Shop high helix with hard anodized case and teflon strip triple lobes. 60% more efficient than the original twin lobe. A blower shop 8/71 with intercooler could likely hit 1100 on pump gas with higher efficiency and cooler air.
