Hi Dave I have an old teac x-300. If memory serves me mine had a big wire wound ceramic with a movable tap for adjusting tension on the take-up reel. In fast forward it would get full line voltage.
The resistor; When working with thin (18 micron) or acetate (breakable!) tapes it really helps to have less tension. Although I personally would then use a deck with a very simple tape path and one weak motor, like the Sony TC-377 or so.
@@12voltvids that’s a pretty beefy resistor they used 😁. Still, probably the reason they did it. Or because the pinch roller is old and slippery tape formulations keep getting pulled out from between the capstan and pinch roller. Whatever the reason was, this is not the solution.

The ax7 is the high gain version. The at7 and au7 are more linear. Most HiFi gear will use the latter and mic preamp guitar amps the ax7 because with that gain it can be easily driven to distortion.
That's an interesting mechanism, using direct drive motors for each spindle. I think if someone wanted to make a modern reel to reel machine, a couple DC motors for the spindles and one for the capstan, a micro controller to take inputs for the play/FF/rewind switch, building a quality reel to reel machine where the only moving parts were the motors themselves shouldn't be too hard. Hmm. I might have to give that a try some time
Bass is a little low compared to the source but it still sounds pretty good but again this is a 62 year old tape recorder and there is a fair bit of wear on the heads and that most certainly affects frequency response.
That's a really old Teac, with a really strange function selection! The coupling system for the reels is quite unique, I have serviced a lot of tape recorders. never seen this "patent" before

The compact cassette had already become king by 1982 for home recording. I would love to have had the quality of recording that reel-to-reel gave back in those days, though.

Apple supports iPhones for 6 years. I think it's a reasonable amount of time. I mean it could be better, but show me one Android phone manufacturer that even comes close to 4 years... Apple currently still supports the iPhone X (S and R) models as well as the SE 2nd and 3rd gen. IMHO 10 years should be mandated. But 6 is also pretty good. And I think apps still run to this day if you go back to even an iPhone 7. iPhone 6 users now get trouble. So how old is the iPhone 6? ... It's a bummer, but I think the support is better than on Android.

Only the playback heads require demagnetizing. The record head is demagnetized by the AC bias signal when record is selected as is the erase head.

Except that it's so low that you have to start it by hand every time and some times it just stops as there isn't enough torques.
