TEAC 808 Reel To Reel with multiple faults to solve

  • This one is from 1962. Full of tubes, 3 motors and it has multiple faults.
    For starters it doesn't play, doesn't record and there is distorted sound on left channel audio pass through. The take up hub has no torque on playback, will not start without a helping hand. It has studio spindles that require reels with an index pin hole. Not all tape reels will fit this beast. I have my work cut out on this one. Did I mention that it is loaded with PCB filled capacitors? Well it has that too. This was pretty much a full day to get this unit where I got it.
    Sit back, grab a coffee and watch this beast come back from the dead.

    A lot of people dont recognize the importance of cleaning and demagnitizing the heads and tape path..that increases the signal..You are one of the best repairs of r/r decks on youtube,,taught Me a lot,,

      Only the playback heads require demagnetizing. The record head is demagnetized by the AC bias signal when record is selected as is the erase head.

    A labour of love getting this one into working order.

    Just plenty of time and experience.

      This was all day, and this is the second edit. Some quack (someone with DR. as their title) used a music bakery track for a hypnosis bed and filed a bullshit copyright claim, and I don't feel like waiting 30 days for the claimant (CD Baby) to release, so I snipped and re-uploaded. There is relevant commentary that was also cut but I am getting tired of this shit.

      Doing RUclips video's is getting to be more hassle than it is worth.
      It is far to easy for anyone to file a copywright claim with very little evidence
      and RUclips always seem to take their side.
      If this continues, sooner or later some channels will just close, you can't waste many hours
      just to have an idiot claiming the content is theirs.@@12voltvids

    Hi Dave I have an old teac x-300. If memory serves me mine had a big wire wound ceramic with a movable tap for adjusting tension on the take-up reel. In fast forward it would get full line voltage.

      The ax7 is the high gain version. The at7 and au7 are more linear. Most HiFi gear will use the latter and mic preamp guitar amps the ax7 because with that gain it can be easily driven to distortion.

      Bass is a little low compared to the source but it still sounds pretty good but again this is a 62 year old tape recorder and there is a fair bit of wear on the heads and that most certainly affects frequency response.

  • @rollingtroll
    @rollingtroll 7 месяцев назад +1

    The resistor; When working with thin (18 micron) or acetate (breakable!) tapes it really helps to have less tension. Although I personally would then use a deck with a very simple tape path and one weak motor, like the Sony TC-377 or so.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 месяцев назад

      Except that it's so low that you have to start it by hand every time and some times it just stops as there isn't enough torques.

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll 7 месяцев назад

      @@12voltvids that’s a pretty beefy resistor they used 😁. Still, probably the reason they did it. Or because the pinch roller is old and slippery tape formulations keep getting pulled out from between the capstan and pinch roller. Whatever the reason was, this is not the solution.

    At 8:02 I expected "because it doesn't know the words". I seem to remember you making that joke in one of your videos 3-4 years ago. Edit: At 8:35 you did it! I commented too early. When I first got into HiFi, the reel-to-reel era seems to had long passed and I never saw any reel-to-reel machines for sale and don't think there was anywhere around me to buy tapes for them. The compact cassette had already become king by 1982 for home recording. I would love to have had the quality of recording that reel-to-reel gave back in those days, though.

    That's an interesting mechanism, using direct drive motors for each spindle. I think if someone wanted to make a modern reel to reel machine, a couple DC motors for the spindles and one for the capstan, a micro controller to take inputs for the play/FF/rewind switch, building a quality reel to reel machine where the only moving parts were the motors themselves shouldn't be too hard. Hmm. I might have to give that a try some time

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  26 дней назад

      Many reel to reel used direct drive reel motors. Ac motors are the simplest design.

    Apple supports iPhones for 6 years. I think it's a reasonable amount of time. I mean it could be better, but show me one Android phone manufacturer that even comes close to 4 years... Apple currently still supports the iPhone X (S and R) models as well as the SE 2nd and 3rd gen. IMHO 10 years should be mandated. But 6 is also pretty good. And I think apps still run to this day if you go back to even an iPhone 7. iPhone 6 users now get trouble. So how old is the iPhone 6? ... It's a bummer, but I think the support is better than on Android.
