Italy has gas and it's safe whenever we have an explosion it's usually a suicide or some stupid accident that has nothing to do with the safety of the gas system but more with the stupidity of people.
It actually looks like 'something' exploded. In other words its not like the rooms filled with gas and THEN ignited. it was not that kind of explosion, unless it was somehow concentrated in one room and then it went off like a bomb. The initial blast sent debris straight up in a defined shape and the rest blew out or fell down because of THAT explosion. Reminds me of the myth busters and when they were experimenting with exploding water heaters. It would blow the heater straight up thru the roof for a couple hundred feet - doing lots of structural damage, but the steam cloud blew out the walls. I don't think it was a water heater, but its very similar.
I thought the same too when initially watching the video. But if you've been on this block you might think differently. The homes are all stacked together with dense brick. Many row homes in the city are like this. In addition, it's pretty common to find a second kitchen on upper floors of homes like this. All considered, the explosion seemed pretty typical

I used to be a gas piper and I hated natural gas because it is definitely more dangerous than propane in that propane gas reacts different than natural gas when it escapes into the air ! And propane gas has a distinct smell natural gas is harder to identify with your nose !
Natural gas is odored with mercaptan. Also, propane can be far more dangerous as it is heavier than air and will migrate from place to place like a cloud looking to explore. A large propane gas explosion is the reason for the One-Call system here in AB and BC, Canada.
