When I hear Decades I often think back to one Christmas time in 1980 or maybe 81 . I was home from university visiting my parents and after they were asleep I was up late listening to Closer ( on vinyl of course), in the dark except for the twinkling of the Christmas lights. And during Decades I started to cry and sat there sobbing my eyes out. I struggled with depression myself and I couldn’t help feeling that Ian had realized some profound and bitter universal truth. I still love Joy Division immensely but I no longer think of Ian in such grandiose , mythical terms. I still feel just as much sadness for his personal situation and everything that led to him taking his own life.
That,s the answer on why he failed to coupe with his then life situatio. He was just a child, young person with different perspectives and views.... Would all that happened to him at his 40s or 50s, i,m sure he will not take his life......
A work of timeless art - I'm 63 yrs old, in a little blacked out house, hidden in the bush in Australia with this masterpiece of a song on full sound, being spirited back to another time & place. Most of us will come and go and hardly leave a mark on anymore than a few people. Ian Curtis & Joy Division will leave more than mark on millions of us.
Listened to joy division through my youth. Being a boy from Devon they sounded so mystical and new. Never get tired of listening to them 40 years later.
Actually, i am bipolar and i stopped smoking/eating pot edibles for 12 years...now i smoke weed every night, or take a bite out of a pot brownie and i feel great! I just wish Ian had the chance or knowledge at the time that could have helped with his epilepsy and other "illnesses"
fishkettle586 this was the soundtrack of my youth. Something to connect to through the pain and sorrow of a horribly abusive childhood then abandonment in my teens. Somehow listening to this now, so many years later brings joy to my heart. To know that a person like Ian could express himself through his amazing music, through so much suffering and pain he could produce such a work of art always brings me hope!
How did somebody so young, come up with such profound lyrics has always haunted me. The band too, such young guys putting out such material is astonishing.
The very first JD theme that I listened to, even before knowing who could have put together such out-of-this-world song... I've got immediate shivers down the spine. And still feel these, after all these years... Amazing...!
Kad sam bila mala, manja... Kak god. Just enjoy JD ❤️
although i was only 1 year old.when this amazing song and album was released,it speaks to me like no other music will ever do.i owe you so much, dear IAN,you are an absolute treasure to me,RIP my musical brother...i love you.
the music is lit. I can't believe they managed to produce something like that in the 80s...and the lyrics are obviously so deep as always it's such an inspiring and amazing talent, rest in peace Ian Curtis, you are loved.
To those 'in the know' joy division fans this is their best song by a mile. Love will tear us apart is brilliant but this is next level if you understand music.
I used to think Unknown Pleasures was the better album but now I think closer was the more brilliant lyrically. Two masterpieces and I don’t say that lightly
Always imagined that this track was about the horrors and destruction of the Great War, the First World War 1914-18; 882,000 young British men were killed,.R.I.P.
I really wish I'd grown up in this era! What happened to all the good music? If you like Joy Division definitely check out "Don't want to go to work" by The Urban Foxes
desearía poder llegar a esos registros bajos.
Erm....yes they are lol? Betrayals, and traumas and degeneration....I've seen some really cack handed lyrics on Google though I must admit. Debbie, his widow, published the lyrics as well,in a book years ago submitted from his own writing. And they were a direct fascimilie of his actual writing....and guess which lyrics they were~the right ones :)
Well you are entitled to your opinion, of course :) However as I mentioned, Ians' hand written lyrics clearly state in Debbies' book the ones I quoted...that sentence you mentioned is certainly not a way an English person would express a sentiment either, imo x
May Ian curtis legacy live forever.
A poet and genius writer
I was 15 going on 16 when Joy Division devoured me. May they never spit me out
This song is haunting, anyway you've not put your soul in the soul pen.
Good night

Profound words. ❤🙏
And ones that totally resonate with me.
Thank you for this ♥️

Ian Curtis is inmortal. He will live for ever.
The intensity of the song, together with the lyrics, is quite brutal.
Masterpiece. Nothing more to say.
Rose Bud masterpiece indeed....
Rose Bud What's your Facebook name?
Dark Flower NOPE! Genius Ian Curtis.
His last music.... Pure masterpiece

True, 100%❤
That moment at 4.35 always gives me goosebumps, 40 years later. Still.
The lyrics are amazing, so dark and esoteric. Music for the mind and the soul
Listened to joy division through my youth. Being a boy from Devon they sounded so mystical and new. Never get tired of listening to them 40 years later.
truly a fragmet of depression, sorrow crystallized.
THIS COMMENT.
One of the best songs and most evocative lyrics of all time.
I totally agree. So intense and brutally honest.
***** i don't believe Ian was schizophrenic, bipolar yes..
As far as I know he suffered from epilepsy.

hey ... read this: www.quora.com/What-really-happened-to-Ian-Curtis/answer/Anand-Madhu-Kumar-1
@@timetin That was bad.
just because he was in a special situation, just watch this -
ruclips.net/video/XyUX_-QCO74/видео.html
@@scinformation7229 nope, that's an overly grammar nazi kind of view, ian was not any kind of nazi at all but a man decent beyond his times
Ian Curtis was a bloody Genius! Way ahead of his time!

this is how music should be.this is musical art and huge talent that is compared to nothing else.huge talent and ian was the heart of the band.R.I.P
I can not get away from reality ...joy Division puts you in the Abiss where we show our selfs our raw self
Well put
Abyss

i so much love this song,it 's like a prayer 💗
the music is lit. I can't believe they managed to produce something like that in the 80s...and the lyrics are obviously so deep as always it's such an inspiring and amazing talent, rest in peace Ian Curtis, you are loved.
what a piece of art, amazing.
To those 'in the know' joy division fans this is their best song by a mile. Love will tear us apart is brilliant but this is next level if you understand music.
Still think New DAwn fAdes
this song saved my life
Markus Bottenberg the sorrow of this song actually makes me want to die lol. Perspective.
@@macysowell1427 same, I was listening to it for the first time a couple nights before, and I didn't have a great time.
May Mr Curtis finally rest in peace.
This song is timeless,it will live on,
A song to go to...Ian you were a genius...
hubschab Indeed he was never bettered IMHO.
Pure genius
Brent Crofts indeed never be another Ian Curtis!
La canzone più bella di sempre
Their best song. Excellence
This song always makes me think of the First World War.
... you don’t know how wise that association is ... and how connected to the nowadays virus fairytale ... long long and complicated history though.
a song with very deep meaning
4:00 Its perfect
wundervolle Musik...
masterpieece..............one of fav.... ;ole.
Absolute brilliance

Best song ever
Always imagined that this track was about the horrors and destruction of the Great War, the First World War 1914-18;

I'm fairly convinced this song is about teenage boys breaking and entering a derelict factory for kicks and being caught by the police.
!Perfecto!
Deep, deeply hard, magnificent! Pure art, both lyrics and music! My favourite!
In this song, the Linn LM-1 and Oberheim OB-Xa patch "Jump Brass" were heard.
A 20 year old guy capable of writing these lyrics may have lived a hundred lifes before being born. No other explanation than an old soul.
A tour into my worst nightmares. A masterpiece
where indeed. ❤
Simply the best
this is my favourite joy division song.
The best song from Ian Curtis ever
I really wish I'd grown up in this era! What happened to all the good music?
If you like Joy Division definitely check out "Don't want to go to work" by The Urban Foxes
The music was good, the times showed already the virus fairytale of now, though.
The ultimate JD number!
in y opinion, best joy division's song..they created the song, but the song is joy division itself.
He lived and died his art! How can one not respect that??
the best song ever
where have they been?
hot topic
Love it...Love it...Love it...Damn!
Eterno.
'The sorrows we suffered and never were freed', isn't it?
thanks ian
Song my life
The depth of this attachment is.......
Back again .. this really is a fucking masterpiece!
desearía poder llegar a esos registros bajos.
Where have they been?
Obviously this song is about soldiers coming home from war.
RIP brother....
Sculpture. Music sculpture. A piece of optimism, not depression.
Joy Division é muito foda
He was a young man when he wrote the remarkable lyrics !
GOD take me back.....
Lovely

I think the lyrics are..." betrayals, and trauma" xx
🖤
I lol'd.
this is so desperet
they have been around under the name NEW ORDER minus the greatest singer ever to live
:(
RIP ian curtis
in the heaven *.*
This song has something of portuguese fado, there's something medieval on it.
The word devour seems to be completely appropriate
Portrayal of the traumas and degeneration
I am i the only one who turns the volume up when this song begins to fade out?
I'm here to collect soul's, just put them in the baaaaasket
where have they been ???
B&Q
This is like...happiness mixed with depression
here's a comment ;)
Are you still listening to this legendary music?
Well you are entitled to your opinion, of course :) However as I mentioned, Ians' hand written lyrics clearly state in Debbies' book the ones I quoted...that sentence you mentioned is certainly not a way an English person would express a sentiment either, imo x
Twenty fucking three!
Darker chambers
Of hell
i know that, "where have they been" is in the lyrics, i was just messing
I'm here because of The Crow.
where are the YOUNG men?
ie not the ones here :)
Incorrect, Heven.
dead
No
C ki, j'connais pas du tout
If it wasn't for that bit of shitty keyboard during the verse, this song would be perfect.
John Bush fuck you
Fk off
I liked the song until i heard the singing. Joy division is usually better 0_o
You're a complete ignoramus. Go crawl back into your Mom's basement you useful idiot.
Dear god! Ian has the most haunting yet beautiful voice there was/is!
