As a Chinese gamer living in the west, I definitely get where the people are coming from in terms of desiring more from the story. This game's story and lore will basically require reading Journey to the West to appreciate it. Chinese players basically grew up with the TV show and thus the appreciation for the story is pretty on par.
For those who are unexposed to the story though, it's a pretty big cake to swallow.

Yeah, and those game journalists can't seem to understand that while journey to the west is a 500+ year old book elden ring was written just now. They are comparing a game.. that much of the reason for it's popularity is because it's precisely a game about Sun Wukong and the reason I bought it immediately. Not because it's a chinese game or good looking game etc.. but because it's a character from my childhood that I love

  • @enightc
    @enightc 21 день назад +29

regarding chinese translation , if you use google 大人 separately each character basically translates to Big Person , but in chinese, when you put those two words together, it basically means Sir, or the person that outranks you and its your moniker toward the person without using his or her name. When you put it in Google Translate together it means Adult, which technically is correct, but in different context, it is wrong.
When a soldier talks to the General, he uses 大人 as a sign of respect, when an adult talks to a child and wanted to say this is for Adults only, he would also use 大人 as an description.
小人 google translates to Villain , but separately it means small person, 小人國 that last character is country , you would think together this translates to villain country, but no
it means small person country. Chinese is hard for non speakers
you would need context, how its used, is it an description, is it a statement
So IGN's complaint, has already been proven to be a hit piece that stem from mistranslation and was on purpose.

@@LutasirenExactly, I’d love all the genshin players currently paying into the endless gacha money chasm to stop, because that ultimately is what incentivizes and allows the gacha genre to exist. Like ultimately it’s the players who are the problem, unfortunately, though hard to blame them due to the predatory and addictive and “free” nature of the games. But if they all stopped paying infinity $ all together at once, the cancerous genre would go extinct instantly. But obviously lol that ain’t happening, because of weak willed/not giving a shit players, so gacha will continue to grow indefinitely

"People don't like [single player games] as much today as they did five years ago" - Electronic Arts CFO, 2017

It's all about the chase for some of these corporate types. Sure, they spent a lot of money, played with a lot of people's jobs and made a ton of bad games but it only takes one successful live service title to outshine the profits of just about any single player game. They don't chase a compelling creative vision, they chase success. Unfortunately, to many of them, success is destroying anything that gets in the way of winning rather than doing right by the consumer or even their own employees.

@1ProAssassin it is why for several years studios were chasing after the battle royal trend (likely still do) after Fortnite hit it big. My kids are addicted to it. I started playing with them and I got addicted. Sure it's free to play but the item shop stuff adds up, and the item shop itself can be addicting...everyday we would check the shop to see what's new. Even when we didn't play, we would log in just for the shop. Eventually I quit but within a 3 month time I spent likely over 1k on items on the shop and battle passes for 3 accounts. No single player games can be as addictive as multiplayer games, by nature. Also, look at WoW during it's peak years.

Hopefully it will encourage more Chinese single-player games to be released. Sure gatcha is more profitable on paper, but it has problems with the limited number of whales willing to spend on a game and gatchas are so resource-intensive that people are less likely to play more than 2 or 3 at any given time. Meanwhile it's possible for people to play and enjoy several single player games per year. And even if you took away all the Chinese players, it's something like 200-300k players on Steam which isn't anything to sneeze at for a brand new IP's weekday release. We'll see how the weekend is.

What I love about the success of Black Myth: Wukong, is that it proves that gamers are still enjoying single player games. It shows that there is absolutely money to be made, in producing high quality single player experiences. Companies are all about shipping out these live service multiplayer experiences, who keep pumping out these games out, and yet they continue to fail. I believe we are at a turning point, as of now, when it comes to live service multiplayer games, where most gamers are fed up. Gamers see the greed, and they want out. They want out of these terrible gambling dens. Gamers have had their battlepasses taken away from them, that you could earn in the past, that now requiring actual money. We are seeing large in-game currency packs, with some costing over $500 dollars for the absolute best deal. We are seeing skins for characters costing $100 bucks. And, we continue to see these god awful loot box's that everyone knows are a total scam. Gamers have been more vocal in the last 5 years, than I've ever seen in the entirety of my 30+ years in video gaming, and I love it. I have never seen anything like it, and I'm proud of so many people who are telling these companies that you either listen to us, or we are gone. The problem is that the game industry right now is not taking this seriously, while they are flooded with feedback, and continue to do nothing. This type of behavior is going to bite these companies in the ass, and we are already seeing it with the closure of studios. These corporations can't even get away with the whole "We didn't know" OR "We are so sorry" excuse. Why? Because as I stated previously, there has never been a more vocal gaming community I've ever seen in my life, more than right now! Want me to elaborate a bit more? Companies can hear us loud and clear. Gamers have never been louder. Especially now with social media becoming such an integral place, for gamers to share their ideas and experiences. So, it is absolutory impossible for any companies to play dumb about any issue. Gaming companies know exactly what players want, and these companies just keep looking the other way. They know what they are doing, when it comes to microtransactions, are predatory practices. They see players upset, but thought that gamers would eventually cave. What to I mean by cave? Gaming companies are praying that gamers cave, to the point where microtransactions becomes a necessity when it comes to how games are made. No. Microtransactions have no place in video gaming.
Games should not be free to play, they should be games we buy for full price. Like we've been doing for decades. Decades we've been totally fine, where companies were making damn good money. Now, companies have never made more money than ever before, because people continue to be fooled into purchasing junk within these gambling dens. Microtransactions is a nonsense strategy, and it is going to fail. I have never spent a dime on a single microtransaction, loot box, or skin in my entire life. I've never purchased any of this crap, because I am fully against paying for crap. It is junk, you do not need in order to have a good time. If my character looks like shit, then so be it. My character probably looks like crap, because all of the good looking gear was hand selected to be behind a paywall. Companies will never get a cent out of me when it comes to microtransactions. It's never happened, and it's never going to happen. I hope more gamers jump on board, who say I will not purchase your junk, I will not abide by your new battlepass strategy bullshit, and stop playing's these cheap ass gamba video games once and for all. Why are you playing these terrible games on a phone, that you know are made to extract money out of you, when you could have a far better experience playing great titles on the big screen using your console or pc? I just do not understand it, and I don't think I can understand it. Look, I am a single player gamer at heart, and while Black Myth: Wukong, and some other similar titles may not be my cup-of-tea, it still makes me smile knowing that there are millions upon millions of people who are having an absolute blast playing this game! Players are overcoming each hurdle, by learning how bosses move, how they react with each hit, where the audio cues are, and when players beat said boss, there is no better feeling like it in all of video gaming. No one held your hand. No one helped you in the slightest. You kicked this games ass, and it was 100% YOU!
TLDR: To all publishers out there, it's time to make more single player games like Black Myth: Wukong, before you guys end up in some serious financial trouble. This is a wakeup call. Do not keep pouring money into these live service games. Just focus on making great games. This dream of having that Fortnite type of game will most likely never happen. Sometimes is comes down to luck, where a game takes off for absolutely no reason. The developers found that itch, they scratched it on accident, and it blew up for no reason. When you type to replicate a game, I just do not think it will work right now, because people will judge your game based on another game. Instead, you have to invent something unique, and you may just hit that Fortnite success, except through a new genre of game. Until you realize this, I highly recommend you stop chasing that dream, and start putting your money down on making great single player video games. The talent is there, except when you fire them. I think its time to hire more studios, before its too late. Without more games, how in the world does a company expect to exist? I do not understand the strategy. Less Studios = Less Games = Less Money.

    • @BeersYourFriend
      @BeersYourFriend 20 дней назад

@@yehuanfa No. Old games that never had an internet connection to begin with, are Stand-alone games. Today, just about every single video game released typically receive automatic priority updates, which means that the game is no longer a Stand-alone game. The developers behind Black Myth: Wukong, for the most part, nailed the PC release with acceptable performance. Although, when it comes to the PS5 version of Black Myth: Wukong, many players are upset with the performance at launch, who have every right to be upset. Players trusted the developers to deliver an exceptional experience on console Day 1, and it didn't happen. The results presented in this video by Digital Foundry, are accurate, who are also disappointed with their findings. There was clearly a lack of optimization for the PS5 version, showing significant performance issues, with frame gen snuck in at the last second, under our noses, without anyone knowing. That is absolutely unacceptable. If you cant turn frame-gen off, then you are stuck with the increased latency and there is nothing anyone can do. These issues should have been addressed before that data was even burned onto disk. Lets say the developers push out an update, which they have already said they would, to correct the frame rates issues, maybe they add in VRR, maybe they add in HDR, then one day you decide to bring your copy of Black Myth: Wukong over to your buddies house, and for whatever reason, your friend does not have internet access, or his internet is down in his area... You and your buddy are now stuck playing a (Stand-alone) game, but lacks the Performance Optimizations, lacks VRR, lacks HDR support, and you are now playing a game that feels less than ideal to play. You shouldn't have to bring your entire console to your buddies place that has the latest updates. Do you understand why this is such an issue, and why so many gamers are upset? Or am I taking crazy pills? I don't even play Black Myth: Wukong, and I'm pissed about the situation. These performance issues should not be happening, Period! Almost all games today require a stupid update, to resolve stupid performance issues, that should have been resolved way before the game was released. The game should have been delayed, and every disk melted down, and remade. I feel for people out there who spent $70 bucks on a product for PS5, and are not getting the experience they paid for. An experience they were promised, but for some reason, no one had access to the PS5 copies, because the publisher and studio were hiding this from the public. Hiding flaws within your product is so absurd to me, that I question if this is process is even legal. How can you deceive million of customers like this? This is not right, and it has to stop. I've been fooled enough, and so I wait before buying any new game. I am fed up with the gaming industry as a whole, because of their nefarious dealings behind doors, not being transparent, gamers purchase a video game, they boot up the game, and they come to the realization that they got screwed. I am sick and tired of this constantly happening, and there is no way you can defend this. It's god awful to do this to gamers. Again, I could care less about Black Myth: Wukong, but when I see people wronged, like a few in the comments below saying they are having issues, as well as people in Twitch chat who are having issues, not only is infuriating to me, but it breaks my heart. Gamers should not be treated this way, who keep getting fooled over and over again. Do you understand where I'm coming from? Good.

They already made a good game about Sun Wukong a decade ago while in Tencent, but the company milked it to the ground and then killed it off. They ran off wanting to make games rather than profit, but were forced to make mobile games just to not starve, and when they kinda got back to their feet, they all decided to that they wanted to correct what they couldn't at Tencent, to make a Wukong game that did the lore and themselves justice. Even then the faced head hunt poaching immediately after they released the first trailer a few year ago. And the lead artist, an early adapt to computer art in China, was forced to drop out of traditional arts university in China, yet he is now a guest professor there. After playing the game for quite a while, I have to say that it's pretty fun.
However, I also view it as pretty mediocre when compared to my favorite action RPGs.
Wukong is pretty much just a challenging boss-rush game with some exploration in between.
And exploration, unfortunately, is limited to running around and beating up smaller enemies with ease
while collecting a few flowers/mushrooms. (You can also find some secret boss-fights).
But there's no platforming action, no map, little to do in terms of sidequests,
no mini-games, no riddles and way too many invisible walls.
Combat also feels like I'm playing a simpler version of Nioh 2.
However, I do appreciate smaller games like this too and lots of good boss fights.
Especially since I'm not a fan of large open worlds and also not in need of more life-service games.
But comparatively speaking, Stellar Blade is by far the better action RPG (Souls-light) for me.
Even from a visual standpoint SB is doing more for me.

The main elements of the story are good, but the minute to minute story is not clear or strung together very well at the moment, but that may improve as I progress. I have a top end system, so even with ray tracing maxed and cinematic level graphics it is running very well on my 2K monitor. The only performance issues I have had so far are the common traversal stutter issues that are a problem in most UE5 games. The only real gripe I have as a PC player is that the game does not allow you to map keys to side mouse buttons and there are enough what I call "core mechanics" that at least 2 side buttons for dodge and jump for example would help a great deal.

Stop saying boss rush. It's a action RPG like DMC and GOW. You just get to fight lots bosses.

Yeah, that's what a boss rush is lol.

@@A-ii5dp No, that's not accurate. 'Boss Rush' specifically refers to a mode where you battle bosses back-to-back without stopping, implying minimal exploration. I believe IGN misused the term to be provocative and misleading. So, play the game and stop mislabeling it as a 'Boss Rush' game.

A souls game? Strike 1 and Strike 2. Play as a....monkey....neanderthal....guy? That's Strike 3 for me, dawg. I'm sure the gameplay is as "fun" as any other souls game, though

The game seems to have a very stoic and serious monkey king, and I'm wondering if that's just some misleading gameplay footage or if he's in fact a laughing prankster character like I'd expect.

I really hope Wukongs success is gonna be a huge kick in the butt for western devs. Games lately have been pretty...well, bad and the direction didnt look too inspiring either. So hopefully if China continues to make good games like this, that are even success stories in the west, western studios will change their current direction.

Agreed, tbh western devs are on rage quit watch already. Eastern devs are massively dominating the market share. Just look at Spiderman 2 which got nominated for a bunch of GOTY and won none of them in favor of eastern titles. They literally made a coping Twitter post where they tried to be humble and thank everyone for nominating and supporting them. Which got subsequently ignored aswell lmao.
They are losing badly and being mocked more and more daily and they know it.

We need more games like Black myth wukong, it’s challenging in a much more fun and accessible way than the souls games. I’m tired of all “hard games” being souls like

It's an amazingly fun game, even when a boss wipes the floor with me. The combat is incredibly smooth, there's no bloat or time wasters. They did a great job.

I played Saiyuki: Journey West back in the day based on the same lore. Been waiting for more games based on the lore, seems like it would do well for a number of different game styles.

People in power know we're losing hegemony and therefore invent all kind of reasons why we shouldn't buy Chinese products. We in the west are proud of our individualism but we really are terrible at thinking for ourselves.

Playing the game now and aside for performance don't really have much to complain about. Game is incredibly visually creative, fun, fast and finally not souls-like. Glad that someone finally made an action game again. Also this is their first title, so even if not perfect they can only get better. Not to mention that if we are starting getting single player games from China that are better than a lot of Western games... I think we have a problem. Western devs need to stop this whole DEI nonsense and start making normal fun games.
