  • The creator of 40k and Warhammer Fantasy, Rick Priestley in conversation! Rick Priestley and his school friend Richard 'Hal' Halliwell created Warhammer Fantasy for Bryan Ansell at Citadel in 1983. After that Rick worked on 5 more editions of Fantasy, as well as Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, countless other games, and of course, also invented Warhammer 40,000.
    With a lifetime of experience creating some of the greatest tabletop games in history it was my privilege to talk with Rick Priestley about how everything began, what it was like to work at Citadel and Games Workshop in the early days, and how things evolved.
    Due to some technical issues with the video I have annotated several portions of our conversation with images from the archives - illustrating the games, people, and places that Rick describes in wonderful detail.
    And if you want to see even more there is an extended version of my conversation with Rick available exclusively on my Patreon.

    Great to see that you made a virtue of my dodgey camera Jordan - apologies to everyone for that - I enjoyed the spliced in material and thought it well chosen. If we do this again we'll have to try my ipad - well, it's mobile (unike my pc) and perhaps I can find a spot when the bright sunlight reflecting off my bonce doesn't blind everyone ;)

      Rick it's an absolute pleasure to hear you in interviews. As a mere young'n of 41 who started on heroquest, battle masters , advanced heroquest then 5th edition lizardmen... thank you for your work. I also recently read your wargaming design book which was a fascinating insight

    They say the virtue of a great interviewer is to listen, not talk - and I have to applaud you on an excellent interview. Magnificent to hear Rick Priestley talk of the early days. Thank you both!

    I think putting up photos of the products and the people Rick is talking about added a lot of context. Im sure it was a pain, but it leveled up your interview.

    Your interviews are fabulous, you're a natural at this. Your videos are a great historical document to how Warhammer has grown and changed over the years, and I would thoroughly recommend others to look through your back catalogue of videos, which shows diligent research and unearths some great Easter eggs from over the years. Long may it continue.

    Jordan, as always an incredibly fasinating interview with an absolute legend of the industry. I can still remember finding a two page set of rules for a sci-fi resource management game in an old trade magazine, or maybe a convention mag that had rick Priestley named as the author. Wish i still had it, i think it ranked up there with all his games workshop work, in my humbe opinion.

    Great interview as ever! Would LOVE to see an artist focused series of these interviews. Interviewing the OG GW artists and getting their insight into their experiences and huge visual influences in GW's infancy. To me they are just as important as the folk behind the business & rules side of GW's legacy.

    Thank you for bringing my childhood memories back to life with this, Gavin Thorpe and Andy Chambers who combined gave me such an expansive experience stimulating my childhood imagination 💭 thanks to themselves for inspiring me to want to create something that could be made possible on the tabletop gaming, dice rolling including the alarm at seemingly endless hours of rolling 1’s instead of enough 6’s and counting to hide my tears until I could get back to my pillow to secretly cry myself to sleep while pretending that I was feeling fine about it all, 2nd edition was so much fun 😂🎉😅 thanks for the memories ❤
    I had almost forgotten about the fact I would have been a smelly teenager at the time, my poor parents were probably hoping for me to wash myself more often at the time and now I have my own teenage child I now know what they were complaining about 🤮 😢😅

      @jordansorcery  8 месяцев назад

      The Rick Priestley interview on Patreon has about 60 minutes extra (though it is not annotated like this version is unfortunately), and there is also an extended Gav Thorpe interview with ~45 minutes. I have also shared some interviews with Tuomas Pirinen, John Stallard, and Robin Dews there that haven't been published publicly at this time. Oh, and just to complete the hard sell, there's early access to some interviews too!

    Notice how the rules writing went right out the window in later editions of 40k (9th and 10th specifically, and Kill Team for that matter). It's so needlessly wordy and obtuse at times. Rick, Jervis and Allessio are great writers who know how to craft a game!

    I have ZERO respect for anyone from Games Workshop. They're all the same. When they were in power, they raked in the money, and when they are fired, they tell tragic stories about how they were oppressed and stifled their freedom of creativity.
    Warhammer > GW.
    Also for me the Old World and the Horus Heresy is NOT true Warhammer.
