Genuinly cannot thank Roger enough, it sounds like he has had a huge role in creating modern miniature painting videos without even being in front of the camera.
When I met Duncan at Warhammer World’s first Horus Heresy Doubles event, I thanked him for his work on the painting videos and then, just as now, he made sure to categorically state that the real hero is Roger. Well done Roger, and indeed Duncan!
Hello! Great video, Jordan! I'm the "other guy" who was stuck in the scenery room with Duncan for two weeks before he started making 'How To Paint' videos X-D
A huge number of us owe Duncan and Roger a debt of gratitude. Without those videos I'd have never had the confidence to jump into the hobby because I thought I was too old to start. But thanks to their helping make painting approachable, I've got a hobby I adore and my bank gets to farm my interest payments for decades to come. Jokes aside, I love that man and I wish him nothing but the best.
A week before I picked up my first minis in 2017, I decided that I'd look up painting tutorials online and if they seemed easy, I'd start the hobby. The first one that showed up in the RUclips search was Duncan's how to paint a space marine video on WHTV and that was that. The start of a very expensive and fulfilling hobby!
Jordan, I love your interview style. Your enthusiasm and love for the hobby exudes from the screen. You allow plenty of space for your guests to tell their stories, but never fail to ask intelligent questions at natural breaks in the interview. Keep up the excellent work.
I owe Duncan a debt of gratitude. I remember the videos prior to the End Times,, but man, those End Times videos are still some of the best! Thanks Jordan and Duncan; this was brilliant!
I heard him talking before and he gave his friend and creative partner Roger half the credit which I thought was very cool and he's done it here again. Nice chap. (and if GW want people to stay theres' an easy way to retain them and that's paying them what they're worth to the a $9billion corporation 😅)
Sometimes thats not the case. There many people like Roger (myself included) that want to be their own boss and set out on their own. Comes with its own trials and tribulations but if you can make it, the freedom is priceless
This channel is so awesome. Once again an insightful and interesting interview. Duncan's videos were so helpful for me to become more confident about painting when I returned into the hobby. Thank you so much for that.
Great interview! Yes its pretty much impossible to compare teenage nostalgia with current experience, especially since th company has of course changed so much since the 90s. The stores might not have made as much money with the extra staff and less 'power selling', and now in 2024 utility bills are through the roof, cost of everything is more and there is so much more competition for your attention/money with internet/streaming etc etc. I dont enjoy going in to my local GW store now, get faced with a hard sell by a manager who is under ridiculous sales targets (not his fault). Its a different time. Still love the models/games though, I get them off ebay and other places, been great to return to the hobby after a 25 year absence! Jordan you are CRUSHING it with this channel, keep up the good work
This is a great video. Duncan's really engaging and great to watch, and he's part of the reason I've come back to the hobby so enthusiastically... a great hobby ambassador, and a fantastic painter.
Wow this was such an interesting interview! I started Warhammer about 2012-2013 so Duncans videos was very much part of the what Games Workshop was for me the coming years into the hobby. So fun to hear about his journey from his own perspective.
Fantastic video, great job exploring those threads he dropped about the divide in the teams and the Warhammer TV creation process. Though I think you forgot the most important thing, the fist fight in the parking lot with Peachy!!! (😋)
i miss the old shops with the random old blister packs and models to always root thru, locally i found a store with a similar vibe, but all used models, nothing new and it was great to root thru
Great chat. How do you keep getting these legends to come onto your show, Jordan! Duncan comes across as a genuinely nice guy, and hearing about his partnership with Roger is heartwarming. Success could not have come to a more genuine and like-able human being.
Awesome interview! Duncan is a huge inspiration and very positive voice in the hobby. Really cool to hear his story. But I would have loved to hear more about the 8th Ed. Bretonnian book and the change of direction he hinted at.
Airfix models, all the greats started on Airfix. I love those little Airfix model airplanes and tanks and horads of soldiers. Duncan was very animated telling of his early days. It's brings a tear of nostalgia to my eye. ❤🥲
Really enjoyed this interview Jordon, loved the way you were able to reference and easily flow with Duncan’s trains of thought. You made for perfect painting company ❤
It's funny, I got into the hobby at the exact same time as Duncan, even applied for a job at my local GW around the same time as him but didn't get it because I was too introverted haha
A wonderful vid Jordan, thank you for this! It was great to hear a more modern perspective, and in particular being able to hear an account of the business model shift as well from the front lines. Have shared, hope more come looking!
He must mean Steve’s Models in Ashby de La zouch. Now sadly closed, it was a brilliant old model shop specialising in radio control aircraft, but always stocked GW stuff. Spent many happy hours there as a lad.
These fantastic memories of starting young with a tenner in his hand will never be experienced again. You could walk into a GW with hundred now and walk away disappointed you couldn’t afford anything.
1:16:50 hey just small constructive criticism Jordan...it's wild you let him say he knew about what Brettonians would have been if not for the end times and you completely let it slide without asking any questions - I was perturbed 😅 Luckily your guest brought it up on his own volition here at the end so we get something out of it.
My Dad and Mum strongly discouraged any hobby involving glue and paint! Lego was fine. Warhammer far less so, but I was very determined back then! Plus he had a small office in Hammersmith only an few streets away from the Dalling Rd GW store where I spent many childhood Saturdays after saving up my £2p/w pocket money. I still use the older WHTV vids today.
Would love to have heard what they had planned for 8th Edition Bretonnians before they blew the world up. Edit, just seen the end of the video away to head over and look at this range lol.
Well, it's big difference $10 for a box of Space Marines then, to $40 today (or $60 in the states)! Not as easy to part with... But I'm poor. I discovered Warhammer when I started University but couldn't afford to get into Warhammer until I was 32, working and with some disposable income. Great interview!!! It's all magical to me still but I've only been into the hobby for 7 years.
Duncan: I haven't really had a big effect on any of the world or anything. Also Duncann two breathes later: So I thought we should have a Farsight themed army, and that led to one of the fan favorite part of the Tau's story.
I think what amazes me is that GW is this hugely successful company that been around in some variation of its current form for close to four full decades and it seems to (a) not listening to fans and (b) constantly asking themselves 'what do the fans want? We may never know!' Can they really be that clueless? 🤷♂️
I think part of the issue is that the fans don't know what they want, and also thinking millions of people have the same wants. There are two things GW fans hate, change and things remaining the same!
I'm sure cisterns of the old world is a plumbers somewhere in rural England, but for those Bretonnian easter eggs it's worth a look here - heresylab.com/flaming-lys-order/ax043/
I always forget how sheltered (in a positive sense, IMO) retail employees at GW are when Duncan talks about them being more sales-focused now, because...that's still pretty smooth sailing when compared to more conventional retailers😅 Having experienced both...not even close.
Wow...that idea that GW management thought you had to show people how to paint miniatures quickly so they buy more miniatures really shows a misunderstanding of their audience. Those that don't buy more minis until they've finished painting their current minis are certainly a small majority. Piles of shame are the rule, not the exception. Perhaps they have learnt that lesson since and why they push FOMO aggressively now.
How I heard that story "Funny story, they diddled me to buy something I didn't want so I thought that's the company I want to spend my life involved with"
I personally never cared for Bretonnians because they’re too close to real life/history. They didn’t feel fantasy enough so I agree, they aren’t Warhammer 😊
Disagree as both are historical. Empire is based upon Holy Roman Empire in Renaissance period. Bretonnia is based upon Medieval France era/Arthurian Legend
The unsung hero here is Duncan's dad clearly, especially that story of his dad bundling him through the crowd.
That's some hardcore working class dad stuff there. "Right. Kid first. Go get it."
Duncan: "I'm not very good at sales", also Duncan: "I'd make personalised Christmas lists for the kids who hung out in the shop!"
Genuinly cannot thank Roger enough, it sounds like he has had a huge role in creating modern miniature painting videos without even being in front of the camera.
Yeah I want an interview with him 🎉
Duncan Rhodes taught me to be a pretty decent miniature painter. Never met the man. Thanks, Duncan!
Same here. Always enjoyed his style
This channel consistently produces high quality, intelligent content exploring the wider realm of GW; it seems to be the best kept secret on RUclips.
When I met Duncan at Warhammer World’s first Horus Heresy Doubles event, I thanked him for his work on the painting videos and then, just as now, he made sure to categorically state that the real hero is Roger. Well done Roger, and indeed Duncan!
I could listen to Duncan for ages, he’s so engaging and interesting :)
Same
That's because he's engaged and interested. He let's his passion and excitement show, and it's contagious.
Duncan casually dropping his work inspired Farsight's Eight is amazing. Great interview as always.

What a great interview. The art of letting your guests talk makes SUCH a difference. Thanks so much for this!!!!
Have to note, cudos on being a great interviewer, you just cue Duncan up for a story and let him riff. Very refreshing.
A huge number of us owe Duncan and Roger a debt of gratitude. Without those videos I'd have never had the confidence to jump into the hobby because I thought I was too old to start. I'm so glad he's aware about his early memes. Great interview!
Great interview, I am still really impressed with the selection of people you get ahold of for interviews!
Great selection of guests, great interviewing style - this channel deserves way more subs!
Fantastic interview, really enjoyed this.

Thank you for the kind words
What a legend. Delightful interview, thank you sir.
This makes me very nostalgic for the old days
Some little kid who just invented a space marine chapter called the "Imperial Skulls" just got his hopes and dream shit on by Duncan lol
Very nice interview, thanks for this!
Glad you enjoyed it, it was great fun chatting to Duncan!

I can sooo relate to Duncans‘s description of how wiped out he‘s feeling after meeting a lot of people in a short time. 👍 great talk, you two

More fascinating insights, great chat 👍
His video on painting faces was a real game changer. Some great vids.
This is a great video. Duncan's really engaging and great to watch, and he's part of the reason I've come back to the hobby so enthusiastically... a great hobby ambassador, and a fantastic painter.
Duncan was such a joy to chat with, and I completely agree that he is a wonderful ambassador for the hobby

I remember that Roman-inspired Tomb Kings army. Absolutely fantastic.
The power of the Scheduler - changed the direction of 21st Century miniature painting forever!
Great to hear Duncan’s story. Thanks J

two of my favourite GW people!
Airfix models, all the greats started on Airfix. I love those little Airfix model airplanes and tanks and horads of soldiers. Duncan was very animated telling of his early days. It's brings a tear of nostalgia to my eye. ❤🥲
As a continental European for me it was Revell, not Airfix. But the end result is the same, I guess. 😅
Revell cars and planes were mine as an American. The fumes of glue and testors enamel sparked the creativity at the cost of a few braincells
Thank you for this interview Jordan, Duncan is such a nice guy to hear tolking and watch painting!
Quite possibly my favorite interview thus far.
Really enjoyed this interview Jordon, loved the way you were able to reference and easily flow with Duncan’s trains of thought. You made for perfect painting company ❤
Great interview. Good to hear Duncan's experience's
What a legend
Just leaving a comment for the algorythm, because this video deserved one :)
Excellent interview. Duncan is a very inspirational bloke and always presents so well. Cheers 😄👍👍
Had no idea the knight video was first, I just used that tutorial! It was great and I love my knight
Pat and Geoff must be seething that you landed that coveted Duncan Rhodes interview before The Painting Phase did 🤣
I bought my first model from that SAME shop in Ashby de la Zouche!! An Ork biker!! The memories 😀
Another great interview, Jordan, I learn something new in every one of these.
It's funny, I got into the hobby at the exact same time as Duncan, even applied for a job at my local GW around the same time as him but didn't get it because I was too introverted haha
Wonderful! Fascinating insights. The citadel painting videos made me so much better at the craft.
A wonderful vid Jordan, thank you for this! It was great to hear a more modern perspective, and in particular being able to hear an account of the business model shift as well from the front lines. Have shared, hope more come looking!
Duncan, the legend!
Fascinating insight, so interesting to hear from Duncan, thanks!
Duncan taught me how to paint, thanks a ton man
Duncan taught me how to paint when I decided I wanted to paint my Blood Angels “properly”
He must mean Steve’s Models in Ashby de La zouch. Now sadly closed, it was a brilliant old model shop specialising in radio control aircraft, but always stocked GW stuff. Spent many happy hours there as a lad.
You get the best guests on here & Duncan is one of the best so far. Great content keep it up fella 👏
It was a genuine joy to chat with Duncan. Cheer mate!
Just realised I listened to the whole thing whilst painting some terminators....
These fantastic memories of starting young with a tenner in his hand will never be experienced again.
You could walk into a GW with hundred now and walk away disappointed you couldn’t afford anything.
What a load of nonsense
@@streetkarp found someone that’s never been into a GW store in Australia.

Fair challenge! I’m very glad Duncan had my back at the end there!
i just watched that Morty video the other day. for all the troubles of the video, it turned out in a good state
Duncan is such a lovely chap
Agreed!

Absolutely

Does Duncan come clean about getting beaten up by Louise Sugdon during the GW car park Fight Club?
“The face…” 😂

The amount of contempt and gaslighting GW has for their own fans and even their own products is really unbelievable
