Thank you for taking time to explain the little details that make a difference in how to finish a closure. Can we all appreciate the finish on the rest of the inside of your garment! Wow. I’m blown away by the beauty and precision of the interior anatomy of your bodice!
There are different sizes of hooks and eyes/bars. You just blew my mind. And thanks for showing how to sew them on properly. I definitely learned something here!
oh my gosh, hooks and bars and eyes have confused me for the LONGEST time as to how to make them work in historical garments (when there can be a lot more tension as you say), and this made So Much Sense!! thank you for explaining! and your end result looks fantastic too
"[She] looks like an edition de luxe of a wicked French novel, meant specially for the English market." - Oscar Wilde. Stunning workmanship AS USUAL. I finally know the RiGHT way to sew on bar closures now. Hartelijk Dank!
Thank you, I've always hated sewing on hooks and eyes/bars, but your method makes it so much easier, I never thought of securing the hook first, before sewing the loops. perfect. and thanks again. Love the gown, you look gorgeous in it. The 1830's were a very fun decade, they went a bit crazy with the fashions, Love it.
That fabric is shocking and out there and I love it. It suits you.As for the skirt, be more extra and have little purple silk somethings alternating on the top of the tulip form. Thank you for the excellent explanation. I will be following your method from now on.
The two threads you showed Amann Group Saba 30 and Gütermann Mara 30 are definitely different threads. Although both are 100% polyester they are from different brands and as you identified twisted differently. The construction of Saba 30 (105 TEX) is a corespun thread meaning there's a continuous filament surrounded by staple spun polyester, whereas the Mara 30 (100 TEX) uses the Gütermann Micro Core Technology - which is a fancy way of saying multifilament - where each strand of the thread is made up of many fine continuous filaments. This would definitely account for different hand when sewing with them. Unfortunately Mara is relatively easy to buy (at least in North America, from Wawak). (Mara 100 is one of the most common threads in the world, it's Gütermann Sew All thread). I've been looking for Saba 120 thread (purely for experimental purposes) without much luck and I don't know any good sources for it. I will say however both Saba and Mara are threads focused on industrial or commercial use, so who knows what you might have access to if you live near some fashion industry (I don't, I have to put up with Australia's average online shopping options)
RUclips very neat with your sewing .It’s an neat inside as outside as I was taught many years ago.I love your finished dress and Because of that neatness you get such a beautiful smooth line to your bodice.I really love your dress .The sleeveless look so pretty against the fabric you used ,it almost pics it’s colour off it..You look Stunning in it too ..Love n Light 🥰
Another stunning creation. Your attention to detail and ability to work multiples with equal precision. Your instructions are precise and easy to follow. I also love that you tell us why to do something in a certain way. I tip my bonnet to you.Well done you.
This is one of those "simple" tasks that I've probably sewn hundreds of over the years. But seeing someone else do it just a tiny bit differently has given me some good tips that I want to try next time to see if it make the process work just a little bit better for me. Great video with a nice close view of what you're doing. I especially appreciated the insert diagram that showed your order of stitches. It popped up at precisely the moment where I was like, "wait, what are they doing?" So yes, excellent timing there. Questions answered in real time.
Yes. I so agree. I will be coming back for refreshers on some of her stitches and the hooks and eye/bar closers. The close up photography and explanations are WONDERFUL! It's like we are there right beside her. I am in awe of the quality of these videos for sure. xoxo
OMG! The colour of that gown is just spec! I love it...:-) Listening to you sew and describe your hooks and eyes was just so gentle and relaxing. Thank you :-)
I learned closures from repairing commercially made ready to wear garments. Since I was having to re-attach them, that might have been a good hint that the method was poor - but instead I just assumed poor quality thread. Which, yes... But so much more. Thank you for being so comprehensive.
Wow. Such a helpful video and we get to see the beautiful dress with all your details. .....with the tulip type gathered trim on the hem of the skirt you could even stash snacks.....😷👍
Awesome video, I was watching Noelle while I was doing repairs on costumes from the local high school drama department and I was sewing hooks and bars and thought hmm, I will head over here as Noelle suggested. I changed how I was sewing mine and it went so much faster. BTW Noelle said to let you know she sent me over. And now I have found a great new RUclipsr to watch.
That was such a delightful, peaceful video. I've sewn on the hooks and bars for far more theatre costumes than I could ever count, and I still picked up some new tips. Thank you :)
What beautiful craftsmanship, the detail in the inside is as good as the outside, I was always taught the inside should be as good as the outside and you have proved that point, I hope to see more amazing creations from your site, Jason from England 🤓
Safed this video in a playlist for future reference, because I'm sure I'll need it at some point :'D Everythink was so well explained and clearly visible, truly a delight to watch. And the chat at the premiere was so nice too! Thank you!!!
This is so awesome - thank you! My first attempt at an 1830s gown was an epic fail, due in no small part to the sucktastic way I created the closure. Your tips are terrific
Lovely video. You have a very clear way of explaining things. I must say I absolutely adore the dress you're wearing. It looks just like one my grandmother is wearing on a photo from the 1940s.
Cool. I always wondered why men's and women's clothes fastened opposite to each other. Closure sewing party! Woo Hoo!! What a great hook sewing tutorial. It makes so much sense why you do it. Interesting that you sew on the hooks in the same pattern as you tighten the nuts when you change a tire. Keeps the tension even. I get it! And that is the first time anyone has told me why a herringbone stitch is important. The outfit is fabulously floofy. I adore it. You look completely charming in it. Thanks for all the great information and tips. Take care!
Yeah it doesn’t make much sense to me neither why we still do this🤷🏻♀️ oh I didn’t know you do that with tires to?! I’ve never had to change one! Learned something new today🤓
I’m kinda late to the CoCoVid party but I have to say that dress is stunning! I love how the color shifts slightly as you move. Excellent tutorial as well, I will definitely watch again when I need to do closures!
That gown is fabulous 😍 I want to thank you for going into detail how you sew on the hook and bars. I've always had problems with this and now I know why. I didn't knotto secure the hook up by the top of the hook. I just sewed through the loops at the bottom. I've learned a valuable lesson today. Thank you.
I hate wax for thread also. I use thread magic. I saw a video of Angela Clayton's where she talks about it and she wasn't kidding when she said it was way better than the wax. It has a texture that feels more like a pasty chapstick but my thread almost never tangles using it. The few times it has the knot is easy to fix. I just put some tension on my thread and the gently pull the knot and it pops right out.
Great idea on the not scooping, I never thought about that but it totally makes sense. I will be using this on my 18th century bodice I am making right now. Thank you so much for your video!
I've never seen this demonstrated before with such clear instruction, Thank you! Also the finished gown is stunning.
You explained this so well! The small pictures with the numbered stitches helped so much :) thank you

I've been sewing for more than 50 years and you just did a lovely clear instruction for how to securely stitch hooks and eyes!
😂🙈❤️
lol... nice to know how to do that correctly at long last! (That gown is exquisite )
Amazing explanations! The little diagrams are lovely as well. Thank you !
Noelle sends her love, and I’m sending my gratitude!😊
You just blew my mind! My hooks have always been wobbly. This demonstration should stop that! Thank you very much for this!
🤯😂 thank you! Glad it is of some help
Noel send her Love and advised on her video to come and see this clip. Will be watching very closely.
There are different sizes of hooks and eyes/bars. You just blew my mind.

😂😂😂😂 oh there are so many kinds🙈

what a beautiful gown! Love it!
All those tips coming from your repeated experience with costume making are so precious, thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much❤️

The detail here is so helpful! I love the little things, like the bar direction. Thank you for a helpful (and soothing!) video.
Thank you for watching🤗❤️

WHY did I never think to sew down the top of the hook first? It's so much more stable that way! My mind is blown!
😂😂😂😂😂
I know. It's just SO LOGICAL. Yet nobody else suggests it.
Wild dress! Epic in every sense!
Aaahhhhh. That lovely perfectly spaced herringbone stitch. 💗💗. You are one of my favorite channels to watch because your precision is so wonderful

That gown is fabulous 😍 I want to thank you for going into detail how you sew on the hook and bars. I've always had problems with this and now I know why.
