Hey Shane. The team in the office were very entertained by your video and 10/10 for helping the french speaking people - Merci. Good disclaimer about the fact that you don't surf... at least you are honest. Just a few things... The reason why you like it is not just because of the deck. Its the complete balance of the board starting with our patented Thruster, springs, wheelbase, wheels etc. We test every single board we develop for months and months. Just like a surfboard, make subtle changes to it, then test again to get the optimum performance. The criteria must fit the size surfer it is designed for. So the 34" is all balanced specifically designed around your height and weight. You went by our recommendations and voilà - it feels good. Well spotted about the Thruster reducing the wheelbase. Sorry about the wheel base confusion... we are surfers not skaters but we understand things like this are important. It will be clearly explained soon. Lastly, thanks for your patience in getting your board... we are doing our very best to delivery to our customers world wide.
I bought one of these boards around 9 months ago. It is my go to surf skate for skate parks, surf training, pump tracks, and tight technical riding. I own five surf skates, are 185cm tall and 95kg, a little bigger than Shane Lai with an 18-inch stance (450mm). This board fits me perfectly and I would recommend a Toledo 77 for taller surf skaters. If you’re purely into street cruising there will probably be better options for you out there. Eg Carver C7 or YOW Moeraki systems provide better “thrust” for longer distance cruising. I have a Carver C7 that works better for long distance cruising, and it also goes very well on a pump track, but I generally don’t take that board to the skate park or bowls.
Just bought a SmoothStar because of your videos! I'm 66, never been on a skateboard before! What could possibly go wrong, much less risk of drowning! You have an amazing style, can't wait to have a try! SUBSCRIBED!! :)

Great video. I've exact the same model and bought it for surf training. I used it for half a year now and it has been great - don't have comparison to other surfskates though.
Caver CX, 66, SStar...next you need a Yow, then you’ll match my setup! My favourites: Yow, SS and 66 way ahead carver cx. I’m getting a c7 for the carver as I don’t think cx is for me. Yow is really loose and lively with diff wheels and more easy to slide. A lot of fun. SStar real fun and loose but less technical, more stable. Both boards 34”. 66 31” is awesome do it all board. Carver 31” swallow - cx trucks so different to the other 3. Much less loose and aimed at different riding style. I got the wrong carver setup but hope c7 will fix this. If you force me at gunpoint to choose one from each size: Yow and sixty-six. Yow and SStar very close and hard to separate. 66 and carver cx big gap. 66 and carver c7 we’ll see. I’m 178 and 77kg.
Nice overview of the aToledo Board. Can I ask, what would be a better option to start surfskate. SmoothStar Toledo, Carver CX or Trinton? I am 173cm and 72 kg. Thanks
En terme de qualité de construction, que penses tu de Carver et Smoothstar ? Dans les deux cas ça a l'air compliqué à réparer si le ressort ou autre casse...
Yeah, a perfect surfskate should have the adapter connected right on the tip of the nose and the nose should not be pointy but more like a regular skateboards nose. It can save a lot of falls for some people, especially when hitting pipes and doing tricks. On most surfskates you have to be really careful where you place your front foot on a surfskate.
Hi Shane, thanks for the review. I have a Carver with C7 truck and another Carver with "Waterborne Adapter + CX Carver truck" (Taylor Knox model). How does the Smoothstar Toledo 77 compares to Carver C7 and to Carver CX + Waterborne? Which one do you like best? Cheers
It's a whole world apart. Carver is what we call a surf cruiser, best for cruiser but the smoothstar is on a different level. Turns so tight you didn't know it was possible and pumping is easier
@@99timewaster thanks. I have recently added the Waterborne Surf-Adaper between my Carver CX truck and the deck. The result is a surfskate that is a whole other level than just a regular Carver (compared to both C7 and a stand alone CX. I have both trucks). I'm eying the Smoothstar #77. Since Shane has reviewed and has been riding the Waterborne Adapter in previous videos, I am curious how Smoothstar compares to Waterborne+CX. Just trying to find which surfskate mimics surfing most closely and is the best surf trainer.
By the way, in addition to their surf adapter, Waterborne also sells their own complete surfskates with carbon decks. If Shane can get his hands on the Waterborne Scorpio Carbon Complete and compare it to other surf skates, that would be interesting.
@@OriRam the Toledo 77 is a phenomenal surf trainer. I believe it is best one out there after doing much youtube and internet research. I haven't been disappointed with its purchase. It rides like a high performance shortboard. Make sure you get the size appropriate one for you. At 5'10" and 155#, I have the same exact stance on a surfboard because it is long enough. I bought a Flow Surfskate from Amazon to prepare me for the Smoothstar 77. The 77 is so responsive that when I went back on the Flow, I almost immediately fell because I naturally leaned much further out on my turns. I bought the 77 to use as a surf trainer to improve my surfing. Hence i don't place my back foot on the absolute end of the 77. While this would allow for more leverage, better turning radius, and more radical maneuvers, i don't think it is realistic for a surfboard. Am in the process of getting this last opinion corroborated by a former professional surfer. Am not a good enough surfer with regards to high performance maneuvers to know.
