    Hi! I'm a college student planning to change my major to nutrition. I was wondering do you have a part time job and do you know if it is common to have a part time job with a nutrition major

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  4 года назад +12

      Hey there!! So I've had a number of different part time jobs throughout this degree. I've worked as a barista, a chef's assistant, and just recently landed a "work from home" type of position. It's definitely a challenge, especially in your senior year, but most of my classmates hold a part time gig. It's also recommended, since the DICAS application is rather competitive. They want to see what else you do outside of the classroom, and a part time job is a great example of that! Hope that helps!

    My biggest fear is that I won’t be smart enough to be an RD but I’m hoping that if I put in the work for it I’ll achieve it. Do you have any advice?

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  4 года назад +36

      If you choose to become an RD, just know that it'll require a lot of science classes and involvement in activities outside of class. But honestly, if you have the drive, the dream and the discipline to pursue this (or any) career, you'll be just fine. That's not to say there won't be tough classes, setbacks and obstacles. But don't let self-doubt get in the way if this is something you truly want to do!! :)

    I'd love to be a dietitian, I'm gonna graduate high school at the end of this year inshallah and I'm from Iraq here we don't really have a separate department for like studying dietetics rather you have to study general medicine at first and then work in a hospital for almost 2 years and eventually you get to choose your specialty which includes dietetics.... so I'm planning on studying abroad 🤓

    • @delanceydays

      That's wonderful! Yeah, I've come to realize that every country handles the profession differently. And I think it's only going to change more as nutrition therapy becomes a bigger player in healthcare. Whatever path you take, I hope you enjoy it! There are actually tons of different paths you can take as an RDN for clinical, to sports, to community health, etc. I personally think I’ll be interested in medical nutrition therapy, maybe specialize in something. But again, it’ll depend on what I experience once I’m actually out there.

    I just now came across this video. Long story short: I work as a Security Officer at my local hospital. I’ve never had any interest at working at a hospital, now that I’m here, I developed a interest of branching out to a medical field type of career, I’m thinking of maybe a Dietitian / Nutritionist. Working at the hospital sort of opened my eyes / mind to work a medical field career. (Don’t feel like I’m smart enough for nurse/ doctor/ PT, that sort of thing. So I’m doing research, watching YT Videos on how to and what to expect. So I think I may check out several more of your videos. Oh! And I love the beats you play in between each section of the video!! Beats like this, I’ll most definitely be checking out more of your videos! Thanks

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  4 года назад +2

      Hey! So wonderful to hear. That's a great story! If you do want to work in a hospital setting as a dietitian, you will need to get a bachelors, complete a dietetic internship (roughly 7 - 12 months), and pass the national exam. I think... starting in 2024, you'll also be required to have a masters in nutrition science. I hope that helps with your research! But technically anyone can get involved in the nutrition field as a nutritionist, so long as they're passionate about it. There are plenty of certification programs! It just depends on what level of institution you want to work in. If you're passionate about it, don't hold back thinking you aren't "smart" enough. If it speaks to you, it's for you! Best of luck! And thank you so much for watching!! :)

      Hey Cait! Thank you so much for watching! The nutrition field is reallyyyy on the come-up, so it's a great time to join the profession. I have so many tips to give... but I think really taking advantage of your biology and chemistry courses in high school will help when it comes time for college classes. A psychology elective might also be a good move, since so many of our food choices are rooted in emotion. And then take some time to volunteer or enroll in an extracurricular that has to do with the field of nutrition: cooking class, gardening, a soup kitchen, teaching kids about how to eat healthy, etc. etc. - it'll teach you more about the profession, and also boost your resume! Hope that helps!! :)

      Hey! I've taken numerous classes with nursing majors and I've heard how difficult the program is! I've worked numerous part time jobs as a nutrition major. Just recently I landed something that allows me to work from home, and that's been a huge relief, especially as I gear up for senior year. Most of my classmates are working part time. And that's a great thing for your resume. You could potentially do full time! It's possible to juggle it all, but most who do so take a little longer to graduate. They'll just take on less classes each semester. Hope that helps!

I'm vegan and I (it sounds silly) really don't want to work with animal products or eat them, but from what I have seen there are cooking classes and they're all eating together and stuff and I'm a bit afraid of being the odd one out for not wanting to eat the 'results' with them. Idk if this is a bit of a weird question but I hope you'll answer :) thank u again

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  3 года назад +1

      Hi!! Not a silly question at all. I have a handful of friends who are strictly plant-based in my nutrition program. I've been required to take one hands-on cooking class, and while tasting the food was recommended (so you know what you're doing, and you present a great dish to the chef for grading), professors were understanding. I can't have gluten, for example, and neither could one of my good friends. So we just didn't taste anything with gluten! No pressure. Now I don't know how other schools are... maybe you'll have numerous cooking classes... but in my experience people are understanding. That being said, the reality is that you will have to work with clients who eat meat. That's just part of your training. You might need to cook meat-based meals in your classes. You'll need to know the in's and out's of both animal and plant based protein. But forcing you to eat meat? I've never of such a thing. At least where I go to school.

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  5 лет назад +1

      @@mylalarsen9643 I'll use a couple different ones, but I'd say my favorites are the "Not your Mother's" and Dove brands!! There's a few different types of dry shampoo within those brands (ie: volumizing or a certain scent) but I'll just grab whatever's available! Both work really well with my hair! For darker hair, I'd just make sure you really rub in the product, because it does have a white, chalky consistency. Easier to get away with when you have lighter hair.

    I'm still trying to understand the differencr between a dietitian and nutritionist lol so are you now training to be a nutritionist or a dietitian?

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  4 года назад +4

      It's a common mixup! The words are often used interchangeably! All dietitians are nutritionists... but not all nutritionists are dietitians. Because technically anyone can call themselves a nutritionist! There's no hard law or rule about it. A lot of nutritionists get their education through certification programs. And there are wonderful nutritionists out there! Dietitians, on the other hand, require a 4 year degree, a 7-12 month internship, and must sit for a national licensing exam. Dietitians are the only ones working in hospital settings. Their titles have the most reach. A lot of places won't hire you unless you're a dietitian. Nutritionists are much more limited, and usually stick to gyms or private lifestyle practice or health coaching. I hope that helps!! Both career paths are valid and wonderful!

    Hi! I'm 16 (almost 17 hehe) and nutrition has been my passion since I'm 14. I also aspire to be an RDN and watching this video brought a huge smile to my face! I would like to know which countries are for you the best to study nutrition? And also if I would be able to do a lot of internships in many different countries during my studies, as I love traveling? Ps: I'm from Congo, and french is my mother tongue, so sorry if I made a lot of mistakes^^^ And now that I think about it, do you think it will be possible to learn Korean for example in a school besides doing my nutrition studies? Sorry for all of these questions :)

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  3 года назад

      Hello!! So happy to hear that you’re interested in becoming an RD! ❤️ I only know what it’s like studying nutrition in the United States - which has been a great experience for me. I think you can study abroad during your undergrad degree, but your internship probably needs to be in the country you plan to work in. This all depends on the school you attend and country you study in! It really varies. But if you look up the academy of nutrition and dietetics, you’ll learn everything you need to know about the profession in the US. Best of luck!!

    I have a question is nutrition one of the subfields of biology ? Or a medicine's one ?

    • @delanceydays
      @delanceydays  4 года назад +1

      Hey Sarah! So I would say it falls under both! Nutrition includes bio classes. And you may end up working in clinical dietetics if you become a registered dietitian - working in a hospital as part of a medical team. I also know some people who studied nutrition for undergrad and then went on to medical school!

      Hey Grace! Every college and program will be different, but at my specific school we didn't dissect anything beyond a sheep's heart in Anatomy and Physiology lab. No cadavers or cats. In my experience, that's usually a med student thing. But again, every program is different!

      The specific school you study at won't necessarily dictate your salary. It's really going to depend on where you work, the position you take, as well as your level of education. Each state in the US is different due to factors such as cost of living! You can easily google pay ranges in whichever area you plan on working/living in!
