Kinda sad that clowns managed to catch such a horrible reputation. Anytime the topic of clowns is brought up, everyone immediately starts thinking about the murders.
All in all, the theme of absurdism is important. Whether it be evil clowns or good clowns, the message really is, life is unpredictable and don't take yourself too seriously, because we are all clowns. Even the Joker in TDK achieved a message worthy of the clown archetype.
Though I'm terrified of them, there are some video game clowns I like both villainous or misunderstood. Jester from Devil May Cry 3 serves as Arkham's alter ego, 'guiding' Dante on how to progress through the Temen-Ni-Gru. Annoyed, Dante threatens to shoot him in the nose while taking his advice before realizing Jester was in fact a ploy to Arkham's goal to merge the human world and underworld with his mother's heirloom. I just adore the chemistry between Adam D Clark and Reuben Langdon in English, and eventually during M13, Dan Southworth and Kari Wahlgren(Stephanie Cheeva via DMC3's mocap production and previz on Langdon's official YT channel), as the game was the point where the Devil May Cry franchise embraced it's absurdism since the first and second entry(both were unintentional prior to DMC3). Kefka Palazzo is another example. With many FF fans sighting him as an inspiration from the Joker. Kefka was originally the lackey of what we thought to be FFVI's antagonist, until he kills him, merges the three Statues on the Floating Continent, and causes the end of the world; his reality where anyone(including Relm's grandfather Strago at the Worship Tower) to worship him as God. It was until Celes brought Locke, Terra, Setzer, Edgar, and the Returners back together to face Kefka and save the world. The final battle is where the clown's iconic theme 'Laughing Mad' comes into view. In certain Final Fantasy spinoffs like the Dissidia series, Dave Wittenberg and Shigeru Chiba did amazing as Kefka in both English and Japanese, enjoying how much he terrorizes Terra and the Warriors of Cosmos/Materia and threaten all existence with the power of Chaos, Spiritus, and the aforementioned Materia to make the multiverse his own. Lastly, Pietro. A sheep villager you can help move into your town/island in the Animal Crossing series. He's usually shy and outgoing, and likes how the player would solve his problems, bond with the other villagers, and have the urge to give you furniture or clothing as a gift of your kindness. Don't get me wrong, Animal Crossing remains to be adorable, but I'm still waiting until Nintendo can update New Horizons again after a while similar to what they did earlier with New Leaf's Welcome Amiibo.
I think my favorite evil clown has to be Flotsam from Dark Cloud 2. The whole plot of that game starts with the circus coming to town so the troupe leader can get the protagonist's macguffin. I also had one of the creepy clowns trespassing on my property during that whole fiasco. Something wasn't sitting with me right during the day so I kept an eye out my window after dark and lo and behold I see one emerge out the woods and approach my fence. The second he so much as touched it, I flung my window open and screamed out a threat that scared the hell out of him and drove him off lolol
I was pleased that you did so much quality research on this subject, but I am a little sad to think that positive impact of clowns will never come back. I enjoy them
Coming across this video was interesting. I've grown up around clowns as my Nana has a bunch of figurines of clowns, and my one of my favorite shows when I was little was Jojo's Circus who's main character was a clown. So I've grown up feeling that clowns are things that full of joy or perhaps sadness as some of my Nana's figurines depict that of the sad homeless clown character. I never expected that behind the curtain of light and the brief bit of sadness was a history riddled with death and darkness. And I find it incredibly fascinating I love learning about things like this and it doesn't take away my fondness that I have for clowns it's made it grow.
I remember running into a video of somebody who has such a phobia of clowns that they thought that the giants in bible times looked like clowns which is why we are afraid of them
@@vandarkholme8548 Yeah, that is the guy I am referencing. I watched a couple of his videos and while he has interesting takes they are all through a very Christian lens, like how evil spirits can inspire you with ideas when the muses are a thing sense Greek times.
I read something fun about the Nintendo Switch game ARMS the other year. One of the characters is a clown girl named Lola Pop, and when concept art made its way to Nintendo of America, the devs were surprised by the negative reaction a lot of employees had to her. The game director, Kosuke Yabuki, evidently thought it was hilarious that they were afraid of clowns and stated that he'd "learned a weak point of Americans" after word got back to him. I can't seem to find the actual source on this though. The ARMS Wiki's citation leads to a deleted youtube video (presumably an interview) and I can't find anything else, so it may just be a rumor. Nonetheless, it's a good example of how the fear of clowns is a uniquely American phenomenon.
glad i found this channel before it got popular! ur probably making the best content on the website rn especially on horror and music that are more niche content
I think its worth noting that Joker was a homicidal murderer in his first comic book appearance, but the Comics Code of Authority forced writers to tone down his intensity for decades. Not that it really contradicts anything you said. Great video as always
Had a buddy in high school who was a major ICP fan so I’ve always found the juggalo subculture fascinating. ICP had a few solid tracks and thought Twiztid were actually pretty good. I even saw them at Warped Tour 2018 waiting for Kublai Khan lol.
Here’s a list on things that make people fear clowns: Stephen King’s It The Joker from Batman (and darker, more evil versions of him in various adaptations) Killer Klowns from Outer Space John Wayne Gacy, a.k.a. Pogo the Clown Creepy clown mascots in advertisements and PSAs Insane Clown Posse, juggalos, and negative stereotypes surrounding them Creepy clown sightings (this phenomenon is known in the true horror and paranormal communities as “phantom clowns”) Sam the Sandown Clown (an alleged paranormal entity that looked like a clown)

The image of the clown originated with gallic slaves. Note the pointed "phrygian" cap, the pale skin with curly red hair, and red nose. They were taken as slaves and made into entertainers for their owners.
It is really a shame that the first thing you see when goggeling clowns is mostly killer clowns. You hardly find movies about positive clowns either. When thinking about clowns joy and positivity should be the first thing that comes to mind, not horror and murder.
It honestly depends how the clown looks and how they represent themselves just because a clown may look creepy doesn’t mean they’re bad just because the clown is cute. Doesn’t mean they’re good if you get what I’m saying I’m a clown and I express myself in different ways with all kinds of different make up I just do a lot of clown core.
I am by no means trying to defend gacy but since you didn’t mention it i wanted to add that he himself was sa‘ed by another girl at a very young age before he sa‘ed that girl in elementary school. It didn’t just come from nothing. ALSO he was sa‘ed by a family friend in the same year he did that to the girl and he told his parents that he didn’t want to be with the family friend alone anymore and they didn’t even question it

is it sad or has there always been a darkness in the origins of clowns
