    1 If that pin is bottomed out in the bore, when you weld it it will expand and crack the root weld as fast as you put it in.
    2 Oiling the pin contaminates the weld causing porosity.
    3 Undercut and gouges left after grinding guarantee a failure.
    This shaft is sure to break again the first time the driver puts a heavy load on it or shifts hard. This should be considered a temporary field repair that is good enough to get an empty truck back to the shop for a new axle. I am a retired welder and have never seen a welded axle last for very long. We welded a few in Alaska just to get the rig home or out of the bush and into the shop.

      @@tsterioff Please read my three comments on procedure again. Using a lathe as a welding fixture doesnt matter. I
      can weld a shaft just as straight using an angle iron for a jig. I said that the axles I welded were a temp fix to get a rig out of the bush and to the shop. 20 miles, max. I used TIG, not something that looks like mud rod(6027). These guys are ignoring many things, heat affected zone, what kind of rod are they using, pre heat, post welding heat treatment and one big wash bead instead of stringers. In other words, lathe or not, this is bound to break again. And I do have the experience to back up what I say.

  • @andymachala999
    @andymachala999 Год назад +35

    Have these people never heard of heat treatment. Welding changes the chemical makeup of what's called the heat effected zone - HAZ. It drives out carbon and makes it brittle. It also leaves behind residual stress that is tearing it apart. And then to subjecting it to those roads and abuse it won't work. At least try blasting it with a big blow torch, get it cherry red then quench it. This relieves the stress, spreads out some of the carbon, allows the crystals to grow. Look up heat treatment.

    • @bigblocklawyer
      @bigblocklawyer Год назад +12

      I'd be happy if they'd figure out the work bench and get off the dirt floor. Then we can talk about heat treating. SMMFH.

    • @truthseeker2815
      @truthseeker2815 Год назад +5

      You have a bit to learn. The axle was no doubt already heat treated. It snapped. It’s already fairly brittle. In this case, hearing it by welding makes it softer. Also, they aren’t getting it that hot because of how it’s being welded. Did you even notice the type of stick used?

    The Pontiac axles in my race car were narrowed 45 years ago in the same way then a collar welded over the weld… We set numerous Bonneville speed record with those axles….

    • @angusmurray3767
      @angusmurray3767 Год назад

      The collar of course makes a huge difference. You're not then relying on a butt weld where all the stress is concentrated.
      An external sleeve is always a good idea for this sort of repair but it depends on the axle design as to whether there's enough clearance through the bearing or in the axle casing.

      The problem is the weight of a loaded truck and the brutal torque transferred to the axle shaft.
      In a racing car, the weight is lightened, the power increases then the torque decreases.

    No duran mucho, todo depende de cuánto lo uses, pero si le pones un poco de carga se vuelve a cortar, lo mejor es arreglar temporalmente si no tienes uno nuevo y después buscar uno nuevo por que tarde o temprano se vuelve a romper

    Metal grain and metal fatigue go out the window once we break out the metal lathe and arc welder.

    A friction fit with the pin would help and whats with the oil near where youre going to weld 🤷‍♂️ id use it for getting back to the garage but thats about all it would manage good effort tho.

    I wouldn't be happy with that weld. I would have welded it again and reground as many times as it took to leave no sign of the weld

    Wow, here's a guy who lubricates his lathe and uses cutting oil! But then he spoils it all by failing to use a centre drill and using an angle grinder to spew grinding dust all over his uncovered and just-lubricated lathe ways.

    This is Soooo bad--- just reduce structural integrity even more by drilling a 1/2" hole in the middle-- then throw a bit of oil in---

    That's a very standard procedure.
    New to the shop, or the person doing the repair perhaps?

    It’s bad idea because the weld will fail and crack again, the better idea is to bore the shaft head and insert the shaft rod into it and than weld.
