This skit was always a bit odd to me, especially when that weird sound kept getting lower and lower as the numbers got bigger and bigger...anyone have an idea what it was or what it meant?
I have an idea. To answer your question, the weird sound came only on numbers with round bottoms (3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 16, 18 and 20). And I believe that they bounced to the boat.
numbers thats bigger than 10 get bigger like 20,19,18,17, etc, all the way down to 11, are bigger; and that is why... the weird sound kept getting lower and lower as the numbers got bigger and bigger!
But the boat would sink, as the numbers get too heavy. So it would’ve only been up to 12. It’s just like “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” when the 26 lowercase letters try to climb up the coconut tree, but the tree bends and all the letters fell out.

I figure it was meant to imply that bigger numbers=more weight & perhaps deeper voices, assuming the numbers symbolized passengers
I think this boat can only hold up to numbers 1-12, because as the numbers get into the teens, they get bigger.

Wouldn't 9 fall off the oar because of the slight gap on the top right of it?
I notice the 9 is written like that in the military roll call thing also.

At least that way the rowboat wouldn't sink.
But what if it sank?

In Sesame Street...20 is the maximum number to be used in animated or live segments.
