    I have been trying some very complicated techniques without the look I wanted. Your video was exactly the look I wanted. I especially like the way you suggested spraying the patina in stages to customize the color to the piece.
    The whole process was simple , straightforward and produced beautiful results. Thank you!

    I watched a bunch of terrible videos on how to do patinas before I found this. Elegant, simple technique ... I never would have thought of using a little spray bottle like that. Thank you! :)

    Really liked the video and music! You are an artist, so song and craft go together so well! I liked that it was short and informative without a lot of wasted time. I see a lot of uses for this very realistic replication of patina. Keep the good work going....

    I plan on using this technique for a poly ceiling medallion for my oil rubbed bronze ceiling fan. And for a mid-sized poly sculpture.

    Great tutorial! Looks very realistic! Since I'm make my my plaque out of 1/2" carved foam I'll have to brush coat the black and make sure I get good coverage so I don't have any issue with the spray eating the foam.

    This is the most natural method I've seen so far. I want to try it on an old aluminium bucket but wondered if the paints would run with it not being able to be laid flat as this is.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  7 лет назад

      whitedogleeds The paint would definitely run, but that’s a good thing. Naturally moisture would drip down the edges of any object causing the patina to run or spread. I highly recommend doing a Google image search for reference photos to give you a few ideas of how patina would form on a variety of objects. It always helps to see how something like this would occur naturally before trying to re-create it with paint. Good luck!

    Great Video! I'm going to try this on some wrought iron and metal pieces for outdoors. Can you please list the materials/colors/brands you use in the "Show More" space? I had to go back a couple of times to make sure I got it down. Thank you so much! And by the way... I found this looking for patina effects but also starting my first resin projects next week. I'm going to look at your other videos to see if I can find out if you buy or make your molds.

      I just allowed it to air dry. You could probably speed up the process with a hair dryer.

      Thanks for the suggestion. We've switched to instrumental music since this video was made, so it shouldn't be much of a problem with our others.

      You have a very nice voice with clear pronounciation but your singing friend in the background was competing with your dialog. I was amazed at how quickly you were able to age this piece!

  • @jondroog710

    Will this work on an actual metal sundial (likely nickel? maybe aluminum?)?

  • @josephina4792
    @josephina4792 3 года назад

    between the coats of patina spray, it looks like you must have rubbed some of it away? Wish you showed that part as it's important to the finished piece.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 года назад +1

      Nope, the patina paint dried. That's all. Because the paint is thinned out with water it looks like there's more paint than there actually is. As the water evaporates the paint is left behind.

    What is patina colored paint? Is it paint or the process?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  2 года назад

      That's the name of the color. Like Brown or Pink, FolkArt calls this specific color "Patina."

    Will this work on ANY metal? I have a cheap aluminum pizza pan I want a similar finish on. TY

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  6 лет назад

      Cathy holmes as long as the surface is scuffed up to give the paint something to bite into I would think it should work. I’ve never tried it on aluminum, so I can’t say for certain.

    Excellent video... I just sent the web page link to a good client as we recently shipped him a cast aluminum historical replica plaque, with which he will consider adding some final touches to the base color we sprayed on at the foundry. Not many know just how many "prop-replica" items, as you're showing, are done in days at the local studios here in SoCal.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  6 лет назад

      Al Sterling thank you! I’ve been considering dipping my toe in the studios but I’m not quite sure where to start. Any tips? I’m in SoCal as well.

      I've been out of the industry since a pre-teen, but actually have sold to the prop shops. I'd start by contacting Paramount's facility, as I remember them being the most active. Out-sourcing seems to have become more popular given "employee costs and shop overheads", so while I'm just guessing, I'll bet someone out there would listen to your resume now.
