  • This is a 2-hour bullet chess tournament (Lichess Titled Arena June 2020) I provided commentary on. I followed the games of World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, who played under the account "DrNykterstein" for this event. I streamed the tournament at twitch.tv/ChessNetwork. Lichess Titled Arena June 2020 is held for titled chess players only, namely Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters etc... Its $1,000 prize pool goes to the top 5 players, with 1st - $500, 2nd - $250, 3rd - $125, 4th - $75, and 5th - $50. This tournament began on June 27th, 2020 at 3:00 PM EST.

46:06 - after e5, the queen got trapped (almost). Magnus had a very cool move to save the queen: Qf3. If white takes the queen (Qxf3), then black has Nd2+, winning the queen back.

Thomas Bolsée You are correct, but just to fix your notation errors so no one is confused. It would be Qf3, Qxf3, and Nd2+. However, after king moves and Nxf3, Rf1 drops one of blacks knights. So white would only be down the exchange, and it’d be close since white has better rook and aggressive center pawns.

2nd to firouzja, berserked by Anish.
Magnus is becoming more and more human.

The Giri-Carlsen banther is juzz great fun!
Compared to earlier champions who were outright mad, these two are charmy and funny!
Not hateful or ridiculous: Simply two wellbehaved gentlemen, exchanging "decent humourous intellectual punches".
No doubt who's da bozz in classical timecontrols, but this one was GREAT by Giri!
