    Real nice MR2. I've always like the body design. Props to the owner for keeping it clean

  • @Gattsu83

    Some of the things you said were based on assumptions and not facts. Doing regular maintenance on a MR2 such as plugs is just as easy and accessible as any other car. Removing the motor is actually much easier than a front engine car. Now if you are reaching for something in a hard to reach spot then yes the follys of owning a mid engine car shows itself, however that can easily be said about any car made after the 60's because back then people could literally sit inside their engine bays and perform work on the car.
    in a sense you were a little tough on the car but at least it was honest so I say keep it up.

    mr2s are strut suspension meaning their range is a lot more narrow than a double wish. that affects many aspects:
    you won't really get a good balance of comfort and performance ("struts work great if you don't let them")
    -much more care is needed in the tuning and alignment because the narrow range (that includes geometry correction).
    it's a great track car but you have to set it up well. it also needs the 93+brakes to stop as the early brakes were way to small. the nice thing about mk2s is their strut length was really good from factory and wasn't as adversity affected by a little drop, even tho roll center was

    you keep complaining about turbo things even though every turbo car has the characteristic, you actually complain about alot and it's really unjustified, I've driven more than a dozen hondas and everything short of an nsx suffers in comparison to the experience of that mr2 and the snap oversteer ... even ferrari and Lamborghini had a hard time before they got that sorted so please be more mindful about mindless comments because I understand that you are trying but it's hard to enjoy the video when every other word is 'but comparitively' , it's a good car that needed some more R&D from toyota that it didn't get, you can't compare it to a s2k because a s2k isn't mid engined and you can't compare it to wrx or brz because it isn't in either of their catagories, that's like me comparing an apple to a pineapple and complaining the consistency isn't the same ... yes I'm rude and no I won't apologize but I do wish you the best of luck in the future because you are trying

      +Djouneyt Hadjiveliev I appreciate the detailed comment. When I compare a car to another, it's not because they have the same drivetrain layout or are exactly "apples to apples". I compare them because potential buyers might be cross-shopping between the two in the same general price range. It might sound like I was excessively criticizing the MR2, but overall I still loved the car and thought it was one of the best-sorted cars I've reviewed. I try to be as honest as possible when highlighting the strong and weak points of each car so that buyers will know what they're getting into. Traits like turbo lag and lift throttle oversteer are very real issues that a novice driver may be unable to handle. That being said, keep the rpms above 4k and don't drive beyond 80% of the grip limit and the MR2 is a go kart. Thanks for watching.

    Not sure why you said Toyota made a lot of these cars because they didn't. These are pretty damn rare, especially in perfect stock trim.

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  8 лет назад

      +Jim V Just researched the US/Canada SW series production numbers to be about 34k. I concede that's a fairly small number, but I wouldn't say rare. But you're right that clean examples are pretty much unicorns.

    • @JimV90
      @JimV90 8 лет назад +3

      +Zygrene That production number reflects both NA and Turbo combined. You were reviewing a Turbo model specifically, which they did not make as many. Around half of that 34k were Turbos. Also, with the number of people that have wrecked these, they are even rarer now. When I mentioned rarity I was referring to current numbers of original turbos still in existence not the total numbers of both trims produced in the US and CAN.

      @sturomain 9 лет назад

      2,782lbs (1,262 kg) (1991T T-top); Thought my car was 2690 guess not!

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  9 лет назад

      Yeah the Turbo T-Top is pretty heavy considering how small it looks. I think some weight reduction mods would go a long way for performance.

  • @JaycubL
    @JaycubL 9 лет назад +1

    Cool thanks for uploading! A smaller steering wheel helps the steering feel amazing. I think 2,900 is way off on the weight, the T-tops only add around 20lb over the hard top and that is if you drive with them in place. My registration paper for a MR2 turbo with T-tops says the curb weight is 2,6xx I think it was 2,648 if I remember right but that is probably with no oil/gas. To me the MR2 is a great car but I am biased because I love mine. From what I had before it my MR2 is 600lb lighter and makes ~50% more power, has broader tires and stiffer suspension, and looks way cooler, anyway I friggin love it! I guess each person has to decide what they like. I agree the S2000 is better, (it is a 10 year newer design) I would trade for a clean one given the chance. But if you can buy a S2000 for $12,000 or buy a MR2 for $5,000 and put the other $7,000 into upgrades then the MR2 will smoke the S2K. The snap oversteer thing would be mainly if you panic in a corner and try to slow down, or you just took it too fast.

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  9 лет назад

      +JaycubL Thanks for the comment! I've seen conflicting reports on how much the MR2 Turbo T-top weighs, but most say the curb (with fluids) is around 2800-2900lb. I'd like to see a stock example weighed on a scale to confirm.
      An MR2 Turbo with 7k mods will smoke a stock S2K in a straight line, but I'd imagine the Honda will still be the better handling car.

    • @JaycubL
      @JaycubL 9 лет назад

      +Zygrene Yes, I have not driven the S2K but it is supposed to be good... It depends what the money goes into. If you put $3k-$4k into suspension, chassis stiffening, and wheels/tires, then the other $3k into the engine it could make ~350hp - 400hp probably, and would handle great. I don't think there is anything wrong with the handling it is just different from FR. As long as the driver doesn't do anything crazy the car wont either. Driver needs to know the car and have practice more than many other cars maybe. I have had an interesting experience in the rain the way the boost can hit like a sledge hammer (it's not stock). Slick conditions are not good for an MR2.

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  9 лет назад +1

      JaycubL Absolutely, those mods would improve the handling but it will still be tough to match the S2K. You have to drive one to know what I mean. It's still the best handling car I've driven in the canyons. That being said, MR and FR will always have their pros/cons. Same with boosted vs NA. I would love to try an SW20 on the track some day.

      +Zygrene if it helps i'm at 2860lbs with a/c, ttops, leather seats, no power steering (canadian model), turbo, 3/4 tank, no driver/passenger, including all floor mats, trd strut bars, LSD, spare tire in, stock everything else.
      confirmed on a weight scale.
      i think the trd strut bars/lsd adds approximately the same weight as the PS system takes out.

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  9 лет назад

      canuckaholic91 Thanks for that info. So 2800-2900lb curb weight should be accurate for this car and other near-stock SW20's.

    • @Zygrene
      @Zygrene  9 лет назад +6

      +Anthony Santiago S2000 and MR2 Turbo weigh around the same and make similar power. It never hurts to compare. And a stock S2000 will maul a stock MR2 Turbo around a race track.

    • @zzzhuh
      @zzzhuh 9 лет назад +1

      +Zygrene Well, due to the MR2 having the dangerous snap over steer it isn't saying a lot that the S2000 will win.

      +zzzhuh Well the S2K isnt very calm either, atleast the AP1

    • @zzzhuh
      @zzzhuh 9 лет назад

      Haseeb Chowdhury
      It's a front engine car. So, snap over steer isn't present. Snap over steer is easily the most dangerous thing that can be characterized in a car, so whatever the s2k does, isn't that bad.

    • @haseebchowdhury4307
      @haseebchowdhury4307 9 лет назад

      im not saying that it has snap oversteer, but from what ive heard that if you kick it too hard on a bend, it can get very tail happy and "unruly" if you will

    The closest comparable car to the SW20 MR2 would be a lotus or it's exact comparison in the same year... Ferrari. F55 or the 348. Regardless, this guy keeps talking about his NSX. Yet another front engine vehicle. Let me be frank, you are full of b.s. this is one of the best, lightest, top three most desirable vehicles Toyota made along with one of the best motors when tuned correctly can crank out 700 + hp. If I were the owner of this vehicle, you would be riding as a passenger if you were lucky.
