- Congratulations! You've got the D&D Starter Set and you want to learn to play! But what now? Not sure what to do with what's in the box? Let's open it together and go over it step by step.
In this video I'll help break down what's in the box and what to do with each item. You'll be playing Dungeons and Dragons in no time!

Thank you so much for this!!! FINALLY someone who actually explains how to use the books and what the books actually contain. Nobody (and I mean nobody) who has reviewed the starter set has gone into any detail on the different text blocks in the book, what should be read out loud, what shouldn't, what's inside and how to use what is in there. Most reviewers don't even open the book, they all just talk about how good the adventure is and that it's "a great set". Far too easy I imagine to forget that absolute beginners have absolutely no idea how to use the items in the box so again... thank you. It's been driving me crazy trying to find a review like this. Happy to say this video made me place an order straight away. :)

I played the starter kit campaign for the first time a few days ago and funny thing was that no one wanted to follow the goblin trail after the ambush, they all wanted to head to the city. XD This was in a group of 5.

I have played RPG's a few times, but still a real newbie.
As I get older (48 now!) I realise how much fun these games are, and have spent some great nights with mates (who have been playing for many years) playing things like Pathfinder.

I've had the Starters Set for a while now, havent run most of it though. It was cool to hear someone talk about it more in depth. I'm sort of at an impass with the Epic question though. I love imagining all the environments that the DM describes when playing, but when they say "How do you want to do this?" in a combat is also really fun

Bought the starter kit just before COVID, as I REALLY wanted to try DMing, but couldn't find the nerve, then lockdowns happened here in Australia.

We used legos as a base for what's happening, so we don't get lost in the madness of a million words, the treachery of infinite numbers and the darkness of what lies in the goblin caves
Over all, great experience but we can't play for a while cause school is not letting us have any free time lol

Just picked this and the essentials kits up at my local Comic/Gaming spot. I played heavily in the 90's for a few years but people fall away and it's hard to find new players. Soo, I'm gonna try my hand at DMing, this video helped a lot! Thank you.

@@KristensEpicAdventures It's going great! We've only been halfway through part 1 so far. My friends were unfamiliar with dnd and they were surprised about how interactive it can be, took them a while to grasp it but in the end they just loved it. My storytelling skills definitely needs work but my friends are very encouraging, I can't wait for our next session.

My whole life I heard about DND from tv shows and movies, but where I live no one knows about it or plays it..I just started reading and learning about it and as much as I am overwhelmed..I have a feeling that I just discovered a new passion in life..☺️
You can find online groups to play with over many different platforms! It can be overwhelming but the Starter Set helps new people learn slowly as you play. You only need the set if you are going to run the games as the DM though, if you are going to be a player you wouldn't need this, just maybe a Player's Handbook if you want.... I love the level of creativity all the characters have. NPC interaction is fun and combat is so much fun. When you fail, you can just make up a story as to how your character failed. Lol🤣

Im very interested too to start getting into d&d. I ordered the starter set last week and the players guide is on it's way as well.
I have no group here yet so im going to have to find one but i was kind of worried that i was going to find mostly teenagers - early to mid twenties while im 40 myself. I would feel uncomfortable when the age difference is too much.

I just picked this thing up from Gamestop. My nephew had expressed interest in playing to me but he works a 3rd shift job so he'sdragging his feet on it. I'm gonna take the initiative and offer to DM but I really don't know that much about D&D. I'm depending on the instructions in this kit will tell me everything I need to know.

Hi Fetto! That's great you are going to play together! She could run you through the adventure in the Essentials Kit, but there are a lot of other adventures that would work too. I'd recommend to pick one that starts at level 1 if you are still new. Thanks so much for watching 🤓
I am an OG player from the 70s and bought the starter set to start playing again. There are a lot more rules than I remember!

It is a really good one! I had the red box starter set back in the 80's but no one to play with LOL. They are doing a great job of making it easy for people to get started 🤓

Great (informative, clear, helpful) video! A question I have (as a complete noob) has to do with the freelancing of rules. Do you have any suggestions or guides for those situations where the dungeon master decides the rule? As a noob, the rules are a bit overwhelming but freelancing the rules isn't any less overwhelming. What would be really helpful would be some examples of when and how a dungeon master might make up or freelance rules.

Hi Ed! So glad the video was helpful! One example I can think of is maybe you are not sure if a tie goes to the attacker or the character being attacked during combat. In the moment, I would suggest making a decision on the fly to keep the game moving and then look it up after. If the rules was different, you can use the published rule moving forward next time.

Thanks so much for watching! You do not have to use the pre-made characters if you don't want to. They are just designed to make it easy to jump right in and play for beginners. Custom characters can definitely be used!! 🤓

My friends and I have never played DnD! I recently picked up the starter kit. My friends really like the creativity of being able to create your own character and backstory race and class, would you recommend using the starter character's only? Do you have a video reference you recommend for players who want to make their own character and how gaining levels would work?
You can definitely make your own characters if you do not want to use the ones that came in the Set. You will need the Players Handbook to create them and have all the leveling information. I will definitely make a video in the future about how to level a character - thanks so much for watching 🤓

I recommend to have at least 4, 3 players and 1 DM for the starter set. If 🤓you have less than 3 players you may need to adjust the combat to make it a little less deadly for them. The Essentials Kit is made for less people. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching 🤓

Hey, do i need to draw out a map? The video didnt state it nor did the pack come with graph paper, but ive seen people play dnd with a map and was wondering if it was necessary
Maps are not necessary to play D&D. Everything can be just imagined by the players. The DM would look at the map in the book (don't show the players, it might have secret stuff) and describe to the players what their characters see. Thanks so much for watching! 🤓

Looking forward to trying d&d with this set for the first time today, but I have to say, it is a bit overwhelming. I'm a software engineer of 30 years, and most would consider me pretty darn smort, but this has got me a little nervous lol.
Does anyone know if this adventure book has to be used with the preset characters or can we customize?
You could make your own characters to play with this adventure if you want. You would need the Player's Handbook or use DnDBeyond to make one online. I think they designed this adventure to be pretty balanced with the premade characters in the box, but that doesn't mean that a custom character wouldn't work. The DM will be running all the monsters as well an the NPC's (non-player characters). So essentially they will have several characters, it would be hard for them to have an actual player character as they know all the secrets of the story and what is about to happen. Hope this helps! We've been into Castle Ravenloft for a month now, and are really enjoying it. It doesn't really leave much for the role playing element of a true D&D campaign...which I'll admit I've never really played other than Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale for the PC. Can miniatures be implemented in this game?
You can definitely use miniatures in this game. If you want a map to use them on you'd have to look online or photocopy from the book, but be sure the map isn't giving away stuff the players shouldn't see. You could also re-draw the map or just use the minis on the table if you want. Thanks so much for watching! 🤓
