- The Roaring Run Historic Site is located in the Jefferson National Forest, in western Botetourt County, near the community of Strom and the town of Eagle Rock. The area features an easy loop hike with several nice waterfalls along Roaring Run, as well as a scenic overlook and the ruins of a 19th Century furnace used to manufacture pig iron. The Roaring Run Furnace is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. The Roaring Run day use area is connected to other longer hiking trails via the Hoop Hole Trail, offering extended hiking or backpacking treks. The family friendly area also contains toilets and a picnic area.
On this very rainy day, I started at the picnic area and hiked the Streamside Trail along the Roaring Run creek, passing several nice waterfalls and cascades. The trail crosses the creek several times on charming stone and wooden bridges. Hikers will also see interesting rock formations, including some high rock walls in the narrow gorge. The only significant elevation gain is found on the spur trail leading to the main Roaring Run Falls. The recent heavy rains swelled the creek and the falls were running nicely. After visiting the falls, I hiked the Woodland Trail through some beautiful wooded areas with Mountain Laurel about to bloom. The Woodland Trail features a scenic overlook with views of Shoemaker Knob and Iron Ore Knob. Also along this trail is the historic furnace. The Woodland Trail crosses Roaring Run once more before arriving back to the parking area.
Thanks for watching!

Took my 9 year old son there for his birthday, we both never been hiking before, this place is AMAZING ‼️, LOVED IT‼️
Glad you were able to visit. It is a great beginner trail, not very long and only has a few short steep sections, but the reward at the end is worth it. Thanks for checking out my video!
Luv it!!! Gorgeous!!!
Thank you!

Really enjoyed this one, with the creek, the falls and the history of the furnace. Very nice
Thanks for watching, my friend. I knew you would like this place. This creek is awesome, loaded with great scenery and the falls were spectacular. The furnace and all the history associated with the area is just the icing on the cake.
Thanks for this video! We included it in our Botetourt County blogpost
Glad you liked my video. Thank you!
Hope u had mre's fur lunch... awesome furnace...great bridges...may there be coffees on every hike🏕
Man, I skipped lunch and even snacks or beverages on this short and easy hike. I didn't even carry my pack, just a few essentials stuffed in my cargo pockets lol. It is pretty amazing the quality of the scenery and history you can experience on this trail without walking very far and with very little elevation gain. I am looking forward to that next coffee in the woods, though. Glad you enjoyed the video, my friend. Thank you so much for watching!
Get that cup soon... thanks...out with a campfire right now ...waiting on sunrise... life is good
oh man that is awesome! Enjoy it! Be safe and have fun!
Very beautiful video. Nice place. Great work.

Man, I'm Just Like Ya❕ I would rather hike and What Not in the RAIN also. It's just cool to be in the Wood's when its rain'in💦🌧🌦 That's a Neat Furnace you found and the Falls were awesome too. Thanks 4 Shar'in
Oh yeah I love rainy day hikes, perfect for waterfalls and I love how the green of the forest really pops when its wet. The guaranteed solitude is a definitely added bonus haha! This was definitely a very nice place to visit. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching!

I'm glad you enjoyed the scenery from this area. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
Nice waterfalls
Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
That's my home turf! Just over the ridge from there is Hoop Hole. Take the Iron Ore trail to the left of the outhouse and follow it up and over the mtn. Me and my friends test out new gear and stuff at hoop hole, it's 2 loops, upper and lower. We usually setup camp there and hike around, eventually over to roaring run and back. I car camp about 10 or 15 min from there too! There's a few old mines and town ruins not far where a lot of the ore was mined that ended up at the Roaring Run furnace. Roaring run is also stocked with trout if you like to fish. During the summer, people take tubes to Roaring Run and slide down some of the smaller falls. I should have a video of hoop hole up at some point later this summer once I get over this back injury.
Hi, thanks for watching my video. Yes I am aware of the two Hoop Hole loops. I've heard there are some great camp sites along the loops. Otherwise it does not seem that interesting for someone who has to drive a little distance to get there. Perhaps in the winter there would be some great views from up along the ridge? The human history of that area is fascinating, its the story of America and early industrial works along the frontier. I've seen some of the videos of people sliding and tubing down some of the falls. Looks like fun, but I always try to plan my visits for times when I don't expect to see other people LOL! Let me know when you get your Hoop Hole video uploaded. I'd be interested in checking it out. Thanks.
There's no real views or overlooks at hoop hole that is for sure but the trails follow the creeks and have several nice swimming holes, lots of laurel cover for shade and there's a small waterfall as well. Nothing near the size of roaring run tho, those falls are way better! I get excited when I talk about the area, especially with someone who may not get to spend much time here, there's so many nice trails and history. I'm always trying to convince more people to get out and explore it! I plan on car camping this weekend, I might just have to run over to roaring run now, it's only a few miles from where I'll be. ps: thanks for the sub, I just started this channel this spring!
The whole Alleghany Highlands region is full of awesome spots and personally I'm glad to see its not so well known or as heavily visited as the Blue Ridge is. Word will slowly get out though. Enjoy your car camping trip, hope you get some good footage to share on your channel.
What a wonderful way to spend a few hours. And yes, it’s always nice when the weather keeps most folks home leaving it all to oneself. Thank you
This was a really neat place to visit. Glad you enjoyed the scenery. Thanks so much for watching!
Beautiful place with the trails, flowing water and falls, 👍
It is a really nice area and the falls were spectacular. Thanks so much for checking it out, I really appreciate it!
What a beautiful little loop trail... 👍😀👍
Glad you enjoyed the scenery. Thanks so much for watching!
Awesome hike and rivers out there. One outstanding view. Very sweet stone oven
It was a really fantastic place to visit. Glad you enjoyed the scenery from the area. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment, I really appreciate it!
We have family moving to Eagle Rock next month. Can't wait to check this out. Thanks for the great video!
I'm glad you enjoyed my video, thanks so much for watching! I know you will love Roaring Run, its an awesome place.
Awesome waterfalls! You got to see a lot for a short loop.👍😀
Thank you, my friend. Yeah this is a great spot. You get to see a lot of neat scenery along the creek, the waterfalls, and that old historical furnace, all in a very short distance and very easy terrain. Thanks for watching!
What a gorgeous fairly easy hike! Love these wooden bridges :) The rock wall is really cool. The waterfalls are beautiful and flowing hard. The one at 4:30 is stunning. Hiking in the woods is ok if it doesn't rain hard. You are protected by the trees anyway :) The overlook is beautiful, even with the clouds. Wow, the furnace is in great condition!
Thanks so much for checking out my video. Yes this short and easy trail is fully loaded with tons of awesome scenery and human history. The main waterfall is beautiful even at times of lower flow, but my area has received a lot of rain over the last few weeks, so all our waterways are really swollen. We have many furnaces like that around my area, but few are as well preserved as this one. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it!
Thanks for bringing back memories from 50 years ago. "Roaring" it is. I forgot how beautiful it was.
It certainly is a beautiful falls, and the whole area in general is very nice. Glad you enjoyed my video. Thank you so much for watching and for your wonderful comment. I appreciate it!
That was an awesome waterfall!!! Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing. 😃👍
Yes this is a really cool waterfall. Even at times of much lower flow its still beautiful. Glad you enjoyed the scenery. Thanks for watching!
Buen lugar!
Cuidate y saludos!
Awesome little trail. Thanks for taking us along!
It is a neat spot for sure. Glad you enjoyed the scenery. Thanks so much for watching, man!
I just love those mountain streams and falls. Enjoyed the hike brother 👍
Thanks, man. Yeah I agree, there is hardly anything better than a remote mountain stream with nice waterfalls on it.
Nice find Rashid. I really enjoyed this one. Get any good pictures of the waterfall?? The entire hike looked nice from the creek to the falls and the rock formations and overlook were sweet as well. I'll have to add this one to my favorites. Virginia's Alleghenies are high up on my list as I've already covered a lot of PA, WV and MD. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, man. Glad you enjoyed this one. This is an awesome spot and you should definitely go next time you are in that area. I'll check my pics and send you any decent ones. I agree the Alleghanies are awesome, regardless of what state they are in. The Virginia portion is often overlooked because people are drawn to the more well known Blue Ridge area. A lot of people wouldn't think of Botetourt County as being in the Alleghany Highlands area. It's a big county and the eastern portion certainly lies in the Blue Ridge, but the western part is Alleghany Mountains.
This is a really beautiful hike! The waterfalls were beautiful! Loved it! :) The little bit of history made it perfect.
It's always an extra bonus when a hike combines fantastic natural scenery with interesting historical sites. Glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for watching!
That's an action packed loop, very cool! Tons of great sights. Looks like you got your wish too, the water was moving pretty good there and the falls were pouring, sweet views! Great reminder about climbing around on the rocks there. It always blows me away when I see hordes of people trying to scramble on the slick rocks in Yosemite at Yosemite Falls. Man on his own is not the brightest, but in a group, we get pretty stupid :) Way too many videos proving that every day with all the madness we see in the outdoors and how people behave. Thanks for another awesome trip, well done!
Thanks, my friend. Yeah this is one of those rare trails that show you a lot of great scenery plus history all in a very short, easy loop with very little elevation gain. Perfect. LOL! It is crazy watching some of the things people do. It's actually pretty surprising that even more people don't get killed or seriously injured than actually do. People in groups definitely tend to take more risks. Anyway, glad you enjoyed my video, as always thank you so much for watching!
gorgeous hike man!! so much packed into that short loop, I love hikes like that... thanks for taking us along!
Yeah this is a great little loop with tons of scenery, awesome falls, and the historical site...all in under two miles and with very little elevation gain. A rare treat. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching, man!
What a beautiful trail! It packs a lot in a 2 mile loop. Are trails like this common in the Jefferson National Forest? BTW I’m glad so many people consider this bad hiking weather. I love some hikes in the rain. The solitude is nice.
Not only do you get a lot in a short distance, you also don't have to work very hard for it, as the terrain is very easy for the most part. I'd say this is pretty much NOT the norm for Jefferson National Forest though...most of the time you'll have to hike a lot farther and climb more hills to get to the really good stuff. Yeah man some of my rainy day hikes have been the most memorable and its a great time to check out waterfalls, and any place that might normally be busy. Glad you enjoyed this episode, thanks so much for watching!
Are there any bears? 😬 Especially in the fall?
Thanks for checking out my video. Bears are active year round but I would not be too worried about seeing one, especially if you go on a weekend when there are a lot of people there.
first view!
7th! :)
haha nice
Well mine was the 7th comment anyway, 20 something view. Lol!
It is always fun and interesting to see who will be the first to comment...but first or last, all of you who support my channel and sincerely appreciated. Thanks guys!
