The Smiths. Legends. Sadly or maybe even happily 2 of them don't realize how important they are to pop culture and artistry . Love Morrissey and Johnny but without Andy and Mike we're not here talking about The Smiths . Great documentary 👏
All the time that Mike was with the band, he said that he felt on top of the world... All of the time that I AM LISTENING to the band, I feel on top of the world!!!
Not since the Beatles has there been a band that all four members are completely in synchronicity musically. I have still not got over the break up, my marriage break-up was less painful😂in my humble opinion the greatest band EVER.❤️👏
For me, The Smiths were the best thing to come out of Britain since The Beatles. I love The Smiths even more. As epic as The Beatles were, it’s the other foursome from Manchester that remains my favorite band of all time.
this is so fucking depressing. from how they were growing and developing as witnessed on Strangeways...to what died so quickly is just really really sad, and still to this day it fucking sucks. it is so galactically rare to have a band be so incredibly unique and talented...to have it end blows and watching this just drove it home again....just how much we lost
It will never happen cause the QUEEN ain't dead and as long as he draws breath this once great band will stay as it is. Too be fair Marr is in a far better place than the other 3 but would be more likely to agree than the QUEEN to a get together.
Marr has gone on record that he would never agree to a Smiths reunion. People forget that Marr left the band, Rourke and Joyce played and toured with Morrissey after the breakup.
The Dream Sindicate, Psicodelic Furs, The House of Love, Siouxie and the Bashes etc etc etc✊🏻✊🏻💣💣🖤@@. Sex-Drugs- Rock and Roll !¡- Ian Dury.......
I hate what happened to The Smiths...but when I think about it at least I can say that every album they made was incredible....they went out on top so they will live and influence people forever. From the moment I heard This Charming Man nothing was ever the same .One day I would love to visit Manchester ,I'm from Detroit and I'm 55 now as of 4-15 and everytime I listen to The Smith's I feel the same as I did in the 80s awesome.
It's the "leave a good looking corpse" thing...they left 4 great albums, all a slightly different flavour, and a whole bunch of classic singles and b-sides. Other bands of the similar time (The Cure, REM, New Order etc) went on too long and really tarnished their legacies.
Great to get more insight into the Smith's from Andy and Mike. My favorite group. It's a shame they can't play Smith's songs thru this. The Smith's really are one of the best rock groups of all time!
27:02 - "Countermelody" - The bass lines are composed to be heard in the context of the song, the guitars mostly actually. When I realised I felt how funny it is that often its not done that way. Nice to hear from you guys Andy and Mike.
Hearing reasons and answers from two of the best parts of the most integral band EVER, The Smith's, it brings it all into understanding and I will have three of the best men, Mike Johnny and Andy, standing with my husband, G-MOZZ, as I say I DO!!!
Thank you my friends, Mike and Andy, for giving me and the world such a beautiful view of the Smiths to hold on to. As I AM watching this, I AM shaking and I AM feeling the glory of the word of the Lord, in music that you felllows helped create....
With a bit of googling and streetview I found out Drone Studios, where they did the demo, was on 20 Ellesmere Rd in Chorlton. I lived about a hundred yards down the road at the time on Ellesmere Rd South! My brother became a massive fan of The Smiths after we moved to another country. He would have been well chuffed to know that.
Thank you for uploading, very enjoyable to have a perspective on Andy & Mike who were equally important to the sound of the Smiths. I also liked the low-budget quality as it does not distract from a very interesting, charming documentary. However, I find Preston from Ordinary Boys to be obnoxious on two accounts. What a moron.
@@ososnake97 I think Marr was like 24 or 25 when they broke up which staggers me when I think about what they accomplished. Totally different bands but The police broke up just when it felt like they had really found their sound as a band. A 5th Smiths album would have been great .
Love Peter Hook but it was kind of a dick move to dunk on Andy Rourke for being arrested for heroin right to his face and laugh about it. It was cringe.
Don't know if it's in the video, but Morrissey left a handwritten note under the windshield wiper of his car that said, "Dear Andy, You have left The Smith's"...pretty harsh way to treat a band mate, even if you did take him back later.
Zero interest in the band reforming now. At the time I was a fan of Morrissey, now I just think he's a fkg cnt. Sorry - can't put it any other way. I would pay to see Marr, Joyce and Rourke play though, and Marr carries the tune perfectly. Rourke was fantastically underrated as a bassist, sadly, and Joyce's thumping drumming was awesome. Marr was the lynchpin to make it work, and would still make it work. Stephen Patrick Morrissey, however, is utterly redundant today.
It's not beyond these guys to come together and record a single. Donate the money to a worthy cause like global climate change or whatever. Do a Christmas single, who cares, just do something before it's too late.
How disappointed am I? Andy Rourke absolutely deserved to be a fairly treated, full member of The Smiths. As did Mike Joyce. They were not just flaming Session Musicians. Why treat people like that? It is nothing but Greed not to have each member of the band receiving a quarter share - even if you are the "composer". Seems to me that Morrissey & Marr had ulterior motives from the beginning. Morrissey, I do not expect anything different from. It is Mr. Marr I am disappointed with 😞
It's not greed, it's common sense. If one person composes all the music and another person writes all the lyrics, sings the songs and is behind the artwork they are probably deserving more of the income.
Well not really. The composers always ( and should) get the lions share. But certainly Joyce and Rourke should have been treated more fairly with performing royalties ( which was what the court case was about ) Morrissey is always cast as the villain but it’s interesting that Craig Gannon said Morrissey was always nice to him when he was in the band but Johnny treated him terribly. Anyway I guess the four of them left us with a collection of timeless songs and what more can we ask for really.
Nah, if you want to know the real real of what went on inside The Smiths go read The Severed Alliance by Johnny Rogan, and absolute must read for every Smiths/Morrissey lover/hater

Andy Rourke absolute bass legend. It's sad he never found that chemistry with another band but I get it

"I was in a band called The Smiths" - Love that.
Good to hear Mike & Andy's version of events & memory's. Morrissey & Johnny weren't the only member's of the smiths.
All the time that Mike was with the band, he said that he felt on top of the world... All of the time that I AM LISTENING to the band, I feel on top of the world!!!
Great documentary, hearing how things went in the words Andy and Mike. Both seem like pretty cool guys.
6:20 Andy slapping the bass. All i needed

Great Britain hasn’t got over yet. No band had been able to match them.
One of the greatest rhythm sections here. Period.
Mani and Reni, the greatest of all time. I'd happily pay top money to watch them without browny and squire. Genius when they play together ✌️
Totally agree with cruce. Basslines were pure class
Love the roses but the smiths rhythm shits all over any
Absolutely.

Maybe. But I hope it never happens. Never go back.

A reunion would be pointless, utterly. The music is there for the taking. To attempt to recreate it would be meaningless.
Some lovely natural moments in this and heartwarming to know that they enjoyed it and still feel pride. Thanks for posting

Mike Joyce hasn't aged a bit. Uncanny he looks the same going on 30 + years.
Yeah. Good point. And there he is, smoking away like a good boy, whilst I wimp out with a nicotine vape.
This documentary was done in 2007, so it's been a while now.

I had listened to The Smiths equally for the bass and drums too. In fact Andy influenced me to play bass , him and Mike Watt.
Fascinating loved the Smiths Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce were exceptional thank you

Another great angle to look back from.
I can’t stand the disrespect Moz has for Andy and Mike dismissing them as “the other two Smiths”
Gracias THE SMITHS el verdadero Rock de a pie.
Preston fulfilling his anointed rock n roll position as a prick for life.
Morrissey seems incredibly under hand.
Johnny said the same thing that Mike said about getting them to do his bidding all the time, firing people etc.

Merci pour ce doc que je ne connaissais pas, c'est bien d'entendre d'autres voix que Moz ou Marr

Mike thought they could continue without Johnny FFS 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
IDK when this was made but, Thank Goodness it was.

Mike and Andy were at a Sweet and Tender Hooligans gig I went to at the HOBs
oh mike, the shroom story is hilarious
