I played this game for my whole childhood and never even heard of Adventure Island until a decade into my adult life...just picked up Monster Boy today...what a wonderful piece of art! A fantastic evolution.
@@pablomoulin1 I wasn't saying this was an easy game. My mom played countless hours before she could do it. We had to tell her to stop gaming again and again, it was a strange time. After she beat it, she never played a video game again.
The SMS hardware is much superior than NES hardware. See the technique notes from both. NES only sold better because of their dirty monopoly from softhouses. NES graphics were a bit better than atari games.
This and Alex the kid and afterburner were the first games I ever played . Sega master system 2 was my first gaming console ever . I love the skate boarding part
My dad showed me this game as a kid in prolly like kindergarten and It was so hard to get past the boss at the end. Now being older and knowing how the game works now I wanna play it again at 21 and older because this game is timeless and brings me back to simpler times
The "real" final four levels are tough as fudge if you managed to collect all dolls and you absolutely need the hatchet! If not, the intense slowdown and amount of enemies will totally screw you!
It's funny and unexpected at the same time that a game like adventure island and wonder boy started being equals but after the sequels came out they took different routes, forging their own identities and in wonder boy's case evolved from a simple platformer to an action RPG (wonder boy III) while AI3 looks like a Super Mario World esque. This kind of creativity is just plausible.
White Screen and then with Adventure island 4 they made it into a metroidvania and with Super Adventure Island 2 it went the later Wonder boy games route. Then went back to basics with New Adventure island for the PC Engine/TG 16.
IMO, the single best version of this game. The graphics, the music and the sound effects were all better on the SMS than even the more powerful arcade version.
Your're damn right WONDER BOY 1 is The Mega Cartridge!!! 1988 was a very good year when I bought this with my SMS console with Alex Kidd! I actually like this version more than the arcade version, it's hard to explain and I consider this way more superior than the NES's Adventure Island 1 effort (even though the later games were great!). This is the shit, the music with ODC playing style if rythmatic and wonderfully infectious!! I wonder what that new HD Wonder Boy 1 remake out on steam is like?!!! But this version will always be my fav.
+ Matthew Holyoake As much as I loved it as a kid, I can't say I agree about this beating the arcade version. The skateboard controls are completely off. In the arcade game you could control your speed while mid air, where as in this version, you've lost control. Also, the frogs (and snails) are too darn small.
Crikey and I thought I ate alot!! This kid can't go 30 seconds without eating a whole bowl worth of fruit haha!! Great game so many memories!! Couldn't get very far as a kid, I think I remember my Dad finishing it one day though!! Can't beat the oldskool games!!

@dercetto Adventure Island was going to be the NES version of Wonder Boy, but Hudson Soft, who bought the rights to make the NEs version, decided to turn it into their own game.
Used to play this with my dad when I was like 5. The game that I had only had Area 1 on it. I'm 16 next week and to this day the thought of facing the monster scares the fuck out of me.
i think i never finished it cause 1 it got boring or 2 i liked the animation and sound it made from running into rocks. so id just play, find a rock and run into it over and over lol. 1hr and 30 minutes to finish WOW! i swear i never played this game longer than 1 hr at a time
@ValisHD Yeah, Hudson Soft had to change the character's name and appearance to get around licensing issues for the NES version of the game. Video game history is kind of awesome sometimes.

I also have to admit that the anti-climatic endings to excruciatingly hard games like this annoyed me because it's like they don't even expect you to be able to finish the game at all!
There was a game called 'The Ninja' I got close but could never finish it, but if I did I would have 🔥burnt🔥the damn cartridge after finally seeing the ending a few years back, lol.

Wonder Boy 1 or how the saga really started. It is amazing what the Master System performs. Would be nice to see this on PC Engine, but there you have only part 2, 3 and 4.

I played this back in 1988 when I was just 7 years old. I used to play this game until my eyes bled.
+Crank Cinema I can see why. Because the boss music is very creepy and suspenseful. Kind of makes you think that there is a monster in the dark.
+Crank Cinema Crank, i love your Lorne vids! Fancy seeing you on a Wonder Boy vid

It took my sister a full day to complete the game. And that was years ago
Try making her play adventure island...
@@pablomoulin1 I did it. He was a really hard game especially area 4 and 8, the original sms area that are not in the arcade version.
This looks so much better than adventure island, looks like the master system was better hardware than the NES
Master System had better colors, but NES had better sound chips.

Much better. This game looked and felt so smooth. SMS was ahead of its time. And with pretty much no third party support.
