  • The greenhouse is getting too hot! Today I’m fitting some Bayliss XL auto vents and overcoming some problems while fitting them. Also a very quick greenhouse seed update!
Here's some of the products I'm using:

I have heard of these. Do they sell these in the US? I know I'm going to need some for my greenhouse which is still waiting to be put up. Thanks!

I've been running Edinburgh Festoon Solar lights from Solar Centre for a few years now and they are excellent, work all year round. Also the Lunify range from the same site are amazing too. I'm also in the North East and these work even in the depths of winter although they only last a few hours after dark. In the summer I get all night out of them.

I have tried many auto vents, Bayliss would be by far the best if they didn't open at such a low temperature.

'I am literally on fire' - says Andy with a big woollen hat on!😂 Thanks for the video, and the chuckle.

Hi Andy, I’ve always enjoyed watching your videos, it reminds me of my early growing days. Although I’m a specialist grower I enjoy watching others getting on with things. The one thing I learnt quite early on is that you can never have enough vents and I think going forward you will want to slot some more in. I’ve got seven in my 18ft version of the same greenhouse and even that is found wanting sometimes. I also have the side vent as well.
One thing you will almost certainly need to do is get some shading up, either painted on or hanging otherwise your plants will fry in the summer.
Very best of luck going forward. Mr P.

Great video. My auto openers have given up so I'll try to re-adjust before buying new ones. BTW love the woodpecker at 3:30 🙂

Thank you very much. Watched a few other vids and wanted a clear picture of the wax arm when open. As I didn’t want to be hitting my head! Your vid did this and more. 👏👌

It looks like the opener would be better mounting onto the perpendicular part of the aluminium profile. Even with the spacer bar on the part of the profile the opener is attached to, you still have similar force acting on the internal corner which gives the deflection. My suggestion would be to epoxy in a piece of scrap plywood that bonds to both parts of the aluminium profile - that would provide the easy win in terms of avoiding flexing. The longer the length of the ply the better for reducing unwanted movement.

An excellent how to video. You might find that, in time, the lower brackets loosen and come off (I speak from experience!) I solved the problem on mine by using self tapping screws into the frame - you may find that this does not work on yours because of the thin aluminium. It’s a bit late now but you may have been better to offset the two windows so they were diagonally opposite each other - this makes for better airflow throughout the greenhouse. Happy growing!

Hi Andy, keep your manual window stays as it’s best to remove the automatic ones in winter and they will last longer. Many thanks for your videos very informative.

I find the cardboard pots and toilet rolls keep the compost very cold and manage to kill more seeds than manage to germinate.

Hi Andy, good job on fitting the automatic window openers, the wax in side those tubes are doing the job well, very similar to the thermostat that sits in the housing on your car radiator the wax expands with heat to open the spring in the tube to open the window. It's a shame that the frame is thin metal and see what you mean with the fixing screws against the glass As always a great video Take care

Maybe bit angle plate to spread load at 90 degrees with other part of frame, dig out the meccano.

Great job, auto vents are a must for a greenhouse, leave the door open on a hot day and you can just leave it be :)
