- Backpacking Waimanu Valley on the Big Island was on my list for a long time. Finally, I decided to join my friends right at the start of the year in January.
Hikers many times mention this backpacking trip to Waimanu Valley being part of the "Triple Crown" of backpacking trips in Hawaii. The other two are Haleakala Crater on Maui which I already experienced ( • Backpacking in Haleaka... ) and Kalalau Valley on Kauai which I still have to complete.
we spent 2 nights and 3 days hiking to and around Waimanu and loved every minute of it. Almost every minute :)
If you want to get away from civilization with no phone reception, and no city lights, this is the perfect place.
Don't forget you have to have a permit to camp out there.

My favorite one day hike in the big island! It was tough for one day adventure and I wouldn't recommend since I didn't get a chance to enjoy it fully. Absolutely stunning!
It is a great hike, but as you said doing an overnight or even 2 nights will make you enjoy the trip much better.
Too bad now it is closed for indefinite time, until they fix the road…

Loved the film great job, I was just on big island this past weekend and stopped at waipio valley soo gorgeous. Def want to do waimanu at some point. Better than kalalau?
Thank You Melody! It might be shocking to hear, but I never been to Kalalau :)). I did like it, but for me Haleakala is still a favorite for backpacking.
Hi Boss! Love your all hikes in Hawaii. We are going back there for 3rd time. We are going to do this hike (yes we know we need reservations for this hike) 1day in/1night camping/1day out. Do you know anyone who give us a ride to the bottom of the valley? I know there is a shuttle but we would like to start 6 or 7 am. Not 9 am ! Thanks for any info. Keep your great hikes going on 🤜🤛🤙

At the moment they still have restrictions in place. Only Hawaii residents can go down to Waipio Valley and reservations for campsites might be still closed.
Not sure when they will open it, hopefully this year.
I am not sure if that shuttle will be back either…
