"Because I'm not that creative" Jason let me tell you something. I just spent 2 hours yesterday combing through my favorite videos of yours and taking notes. I put those notes in my truck to reference when I go off roading next weekend. Camera angles, different shots to take, etc. I'm constantly trying to make my channel better, and you are my inspiration for that. Thanks for everything you do!
Always a refreshing change from most 4x4 videos. No pretension. Just a guy walking through a variety of processes we've all encountered or will encounter. Just great. Jason deserves a round of applause -- takes a great man to put himself out there without fear of showing some humanity. As subscribers, we need to come together and buy Mr. Koertge an Adidas tracksuit so he can properly do the eastern euro squat at 9:10.
Just a few things: 1) it's a good idea not to step on synthetic rope. While some say to step on the rope when crossing, this can force fine particles in the rope and lead to increased wear from the inside out. Imo walking around is always best. 2) the factor 55 links are stronger than hooks because they are enclosed. Hooks, when overloaded, can actually spread and break. 3) you really should put that protective sheath on the end of your winch line. Not only does it protect the end from UV rays as its exposed more than other parts of the rope, it can also be used to protect the line against chafing if it needs to rest against a rock when winching. 4) it is important to tension the winch line because the first layer of wraps around the drum of the winch is actually what holds the rope. It's due to the friction and "bite" created under tension. A rope that hasn't been tensioned and spoiled neatly can cause a snarl or loop in the rope and can damage it and even worse, can come completely off the drum when winching which could be catastrophic if you were in a precarious position when that happens. For this reason, it's also necessary to retention/respool the winch by hand after EVERY recovery.
Light on for the remote so it’s not the batteries but on those smittybilt x20 you also have to flick the wireless switch to the on position on the winch itself to allow it to work
Something I can add to winching basics if your using a shackle; Tighten the bolt/pin on the shackle hand tight then back it off 1/4 turn. If your winching more than likely your hung up and more force will be applied to the shackle, if the bolt is tight and force is applied the shackle may twist or bend and it will be a PITA to back that bolt out. Been there done that.
Hey Jason! You should try soft shackles, that will remove any possible metal flying around! I have some Gatorjaw Pro, and those have been just amazing, you should definitely take a look at those!
@jason there’s a switch for wireless mode on the winch motor. Make sure that’s turned on. I noticed the green light on your remote while it was unplugged. It should work. Goodluck!
Great video Jason. I’m saving up for a 4 runner and you’ve given me so many awesome ideas. You’ve come a long way and I’m sure you know, it’s all about trial and error. Keep up the great work.
Great video. I really like those Factor 55 links. Very cool and safer when winching. Awesome demonstration of changing out the winch line. Have fun at Expo West.
Look up Navy linehandling videos on YT to see some safety guidelines and learn how dangerous a line that parts can be. Synthetic lines can cause very serious injuries, steel cables too, perhaps worse injuries.
Well O'Neill, if you watch (and like gassers) Mike Finnegan from Finnegan's Garage, Cleetus McFarland with his L-7, and KC's Paint Garage they use the same phrase, soz I think were in good company:)
What are your plans with the old winch line you removed ? Is it still in good shape ? If you learn how to splice synthetic winch line (if you don’t already know how), you could make yourself a few nice winch line extensions. Factor 55 makes a splicing tool you could look in to. Some way like that type of video... just food for thought 👍
Hey Jason, Mikey here from NorCal. I love your channel man. Been watching ever since I bought my 2018 TRD off-road 4Runner (extra white). Also don’t worry about those feminists commenting about your feet. You’re man and they’re not, so just ignore them. Watching your videos while at work now. 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
so what is that red end piece and where did you get it from if u wouldnt mind helping a fellow offroader out!! i could really use that setup i just had my hook slip and my line went a flying luckily didnt strike anyone or anything but i sure do need that red piece to upgrade my winching setup!! that piece sure would make it bullet proof thanks in advance for any advice and information you can provide i really appreciate it.... thanks and stay safe and healthy, -p3t3r
Hey Jason, I have the same setup as you (literally installed it last month). That sheath you are talking about that you forgot to install, that just velcos on its self. Just spoil out 10+ feet to get it on there. It's kinda bulky, but ok.
Don’t worry about the intro. I like that you don’t have one. They get a little bothersome after time, to where you end up skipping them anyway. Just my opinion. Also there is rope on boats and ships, anything made of wire (at least in the Navy). Now that I confused ya. Hope all is well.
I found this video while searching for an answer to your question! I took an off-road recovery/driving class this summer. The instructor was not a fan of the in-bumper winches for the reason you mentioned. Still looking for a side-by-side comparison. One point I've heard is if you have a front receiver hitch installed, you can mount the winch only when you may need it. So you're not carrying the extra weight during daily driving.
Jason, if you have time after Expo, I would recommend spending some time in the San Juan mountains around Silverton, Colorado. The snow is out early this year and it is truly amazing there. Are you bringing your old winch line to Expo to sell to me? I'll definitely be looking you up to say hi.
I 2nd Jeff's recommendation. If the snow is gone, there are some great passes out of Telluride and the Alpine Loop in the Silverton/Lake City area are great!
So first, thank you for all you provide but OMG. Came here to check out how to respool. 15 minutes in I'm still listening to all kinds of extraneous bs. Now its your sandals feet. Jut. Get. To it.
Love your vids, they help me alot being a greenhor at this. I do have a question, I just installed a SSO simline bumper and 10k winch, I notice you run the med duty coils in the front how do feel the ride is with the bumper, and with no weight in the back standerd med duty coild in the back should be fine? Also this vid will come in handy when i switch from a steel cable to synthetic line and remove my rollers for the Hawise fairlead to reduce wait and bulk from the bumper
Haha, keep up the great work. You're so funny, those little distractions are hilarious. Last video it was a bi-plane and a leaf. This time it was a June bug. Awesome man don't change a thing. Hey what happened to the kids?
I know you bought your winch new, but I bought my winch used, and it had no manual. If you don't have a winch manual, contact the manufacturer, and they will happily send you one. Mine is a Warn 9000I, and they sent me the operating manual, and a nifty winching guide manual that went over different winching techniques, and the use of some other winching gear. Keep the manuals in you vehicle for reference.
Title: How to properly replace respool and tension the winch line. Me: *assumes it’ll be a 3 min video showing how to replace, respool, and tension winch line.* Jason: “Here’s why I wear Chacos.”
Youa re mixing a lot of schools of thought that are steel cable or synthetic specific and dont really apply to both. Also, spooling a winch line vs actual winching are two different things as well, spooling is mild tension(which you mention in hte video), you can stand where you want. When actually winching is extreme tension, You dont want to be near it. Also there is nothing wrong with gloves or mats/aprons, but those are two other things primarily applicable to steel winch lines. You can never have too much safety, but things should be kept in context. Also, if your truck is 10k lbs, Next time consider a 30k lbs line. Once you get stuck in mud, or pulling up a hill, all that reistance will add to the Percieved weight of the vehicle. and 12k lbs winch might not be enough. Invest in a doubler/snatch block. To give an effective 24k pulling power, it shortens your winch line by half for the extra pulling power, but in some cases it is worth and will save your tail and the life of your winch. IMO. things you probably already know, but I wanted to share. (im not expert either, Everything I said is researchable as well.)
i dont understand the factor 55 hooks, you need to use a bow shackle with them every time so why not just put the bow shackle straight on the winch line. bow shackle also has a bigger pin so larger radius for the line to go around.
That was entertaining Jason with that ADHD head of yours, lots of laughs. Yes, proper arch support is critical to structural support, alignment, function and even strength . . . gettin' older, gettin' wiser. Still waiting on delivery of my 2018 TRD Off Road (impatiently now) and been perusing the channels and the most oft criticism of the 5th gen 4Runner is they are light on power AND fuel efficiency. I'm sure the 5 spped transmission is ideal for off road but alas we all must spend much time on the highways. So isn't putting on all that steel and aluminum, the bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc really making it suck hole even worse? It wasn't bad on our test drive with my wife and I but loaded with a trips worth of stuff and all that extra metal seems like it will really hurt highway performance and gas mileage. What do you get for average MPG?
After spooling each layer, spool a really wide wrap before starting the next. This will prevent any of the rope from being sucked in between the rope that’s a layer below during a real/recovery pull.
I’m going to come to America and take you four wheel driving. After that your Toyota will no longer look like a showroom vehicle. It’s time to get real and earn some battle scars.
Thanks Basil. I'm gonna come to your country and show you how to find the publish date on a video, then show you how to find videos on someone's channel that are more current so you can learn how to catch up.

Yes absolutely. I actually need to start taking notes on your transitions in your videos. I rely too much on cross fades. :-P

Enjoyable as always! The signoff cracked me up. Keep it up, I really enjoy your approach. Very human!
"Holy...look at the size of that June Bug....it's not even June!" Haha.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one to use the technical term Thing-ah-majiger:)
Gregor Miller I say thingama bobber lol
Now we're 3 :p

I think we are all learning a little from Ronny Dahl.
Jason definitely broke the 5th wall mentioning Ronny Dahl.
Dodgy Davo
The 5th wall? Do tell!!
Very good
The pliers are snap ring pliers.
Someone’s been watching Peter Mckinnon lol! Great video man!

Has someone been watching Peter McKinnon? Lol
How hard is it to reach the spool out lever on that type of bumper? I have only used winches mounted in open

FYI, that last few feet of spooling the rope was the most dangerous action you did. You should pulse it if your hand is that close to the hawse/winch
I noticed that throughout the spooling process, I always try to keep my hand 3-4 ft away from the fairlead.
I am wondering why you have replaced the C4 front pumper?
You don’t have to think of anything cool to say after...
It’s all cool !!
Where/how did you attach the anchor bolt on the spool for that kind of winch line?
Fun! I like the Peter M. intro. U will like the synthetic rope much better.
The front end of your 4Runner looks so awesome. Did the bumper / winch hurt your mpg’s much? Curious of your average
I sit around 13-14 city.
where did u get that front bumper with the winch system?
"I know that it looks better.........." oh Jason you had me there 53 seconds in.
love the music
Jason "Peter McKinnon" Koertge ;) love it!
So first, thank you for all you provide but OMG. Came here to check out how to respool. 15 minutes in I'm still listening to all kinds of extraneous bs. Now its your sandals feet. Jut. Get. To it.
Bill, I had to change the playback speed to 2x to not freak out. 😆
I found ur channel becauseI saw ur RUclips channel name on an attachment to your 4Runner irl

Rope becomes line once it has a specific job.
Ahhhhhh
where is that trail bumper now ? can it be bought ?
So where's the turtleback? You left it out west didn't you?
I know you bought your winch new, but I bought my winch used, and it had no manual. If you don't have a winch manual, contact the manufacturer, and they will happily send you one. Hey thanks for the shout out but i just meant the sandals with pants are weird haha
Pulled that line from Bruce Almighty (Jim Carrey). Beautiful.
You’re going to Expo West? Maybe I will see you there.
I enjoyed watching this...thanks

Things and stuff. I love if.
You glossed over a pretty big teaser. What happened to the Turtleback?
Cool video!
come down to Prescott after Flagstaff for some more off roading!!
peter mckinnon???
I thought there is a wireless on/off switch on the winch opposite side of the clutch control?
Do you know where this switch is?
Love the video
Life is easier when everything is a thingy.

Great Tip! Thanks!!
Those remotes aren't rechargeable. They use an A23 12volt battery. Now you know, so you don't have to open it up and figure it out yourself.

chaco's FTW
You ooze expertise in your video
Chacos are the best
Would’ve been easier if you cut off the hook and install new one. Save some hassle
I can't tell if you pretend to not know things or you really don't know all of this stuff.
This is not acting my friend.
That is literally the worst part of Peter McKinnon's videos. Please please don't add it...
Haha. I’m not. Just farting around. Although I respectfully disagree.
Omg stop telling us you're not an expert! That's so obvious.
Are you sure?? Some people get confused. Just wanted to make sure YOU knew that... I’M NOT AN EXPERT. 🤣
Man , you don’t know what to spend your money on 😅
