      @@idyllicKeyboards no. I can’t form an opinion on something I don’t have. Unless you are suggesting that every tool who is into high end keyboards goes out and buys every switch that some other keyboard tool decided to throw their favorite colors on and tweak just enough not to have zeal cause you of stealing his design that he stole and tweaked just enough that no one calls him a hypocrit because in reality most of them are in Silicon Valley and have to live a life of hypocrisy and virtue signaling. I figured you aren’t suggesting that though because think of the carbon footprint for all of us getting a set of every switch shipped to us just to find out we don’t like it. Think of all the wasted oil that goes into all these switches when if RUclips channels did their job they could let you know ahead of time “this switch sucks” or “buy this switch”, you could almost use all that oil to drive Bill Gates new yaught that he forsure never has more than five guests on at a time for dinner because then he would be killing your grandma by spreading covid.
      Or wait no. You really were trying to make someone look stupid for expecting a keyboard channel to review the product they show us instead of just some b roll and then talking just to hear their own voice. Damn we coulda been circle jerk bro’s

      Melnyx got the kebo and tried it. Not too expensive from AliExpress. Definitely worth trying cause everyone’s mileage may vary. Personally feel that it only works really well on very loose top housings like even on old switches like Mx vint blacks. Remember that if you tend to open and close them too often they may get also get loose and having them too tight may cause your fingers to feel the vibrations when bottoming out... plus I get bothered when some loose ones had films and some don’t it’s a pain to fit in too and it gives off a plasticy sound too. HAHAHA. it is what it is... fun experience if you enjoy fiddling around.

    Your calipers are not in metric at all currently, the moved decimal mentioned is 'thou' or thousandths of an inch (hence the 'in' on the left).
    Should be the blue mm/inch button that swaps between metric and imperial (but if it's not working... time for new ones).
    So @ 4:15 0.009 is 9 thousandths of an inch or 0.229mm, not anywhere near 0.09mm
    For reliable and repeatable measurements in these low ranges consider acquiring a micrometer.
    They have a spring / ratchet mechanism to remove the inconsistent element of pressure applied via the tool.
    Measurement in metric for anyone interested
    @3:57 15 thou = 0.381mm
    @4:08 29 thou = 0.737mm
    @4:15 & @4:20 9 thou = 0.229mm

    This is a wonderful exposition. I specifically thought the "tension" sound test was a very clever way to demonstrate the sound effect of adding films. One omission is that films *will* change how a tactile switch feels. My theory is that it's due partly to the change in travel distance, and partly due to the more-tight housing pressing the slider more tightly against the contact leaf.

Not to mention the amount of work you’ve placed into delivering your questions, yet letting us judge for ourselves with examples, not “benchmarking” this is best and so on cause “to each its own” ya? Everything is experimental and you’ve to see it and do it yourself to believe it...
    Really encouraged with such positive cynicism that I definitely resonate with.
    Just to share, had an experience of making everything so tight, films, tape, lube, even in soldering that I felt the vibrations through the keycaps(with orings) when bottoming out... it was such a weird feeling that I removed everything and left just the lube... that’s when I knew that doing everything doesn’t necessarily make it better...

    THANK YOU. This world of novelty keyboard crap is too fussy! - plenty of us just want the minimum info needed to figure out our preferences without throwing money at recommendations of others. 😄
    Also, I’m inferring from this video that keycap wobble is probably going to vary with the age of the switch molds, regardless of the brand/product. So getting minimal wobble means buying for that spec or filming yourself-especially if you’re already opening the switches to lube or whatever.

  • @michalsatin3727
    @michalsatin3727 4 года назад +1

    I don't like that you dismissed the sound aspect, it is the most important when filming switches. You honestly don't feel much change in typing. The only thing that is changed is the amount of rattle from the switch. And so filming is an amazing mod and I absolutely love the sound. Still a fantastic effort about debunking myths of tight switches. Still, I think it was wasteful because of no sound.

    • @idyllicKeyboards
      @idyllicKeyboards  4 года назад +2

      For this video I wanted to focus on getting visual footage that could show people objective/tangible benefits of switch films, hence why I mention housing wobble in the title because that was the focus of the episode.
      I disagree when you say the sound aspect is the most important when filming switches. Typing on taller profile keycaps the differences between wobbly/non-wobble housing are extremely noticeable. The off-center presses are inconsistent and feel horrible, example at 0:25 with the SA keycap.
      Hence, I’d argue the performance improvement switch films provide are more important than potential benefits to acoustic, as wobbly housing affect the typing experience and usability. Sound does not affect usability, which is why I argue it’s a soft attribute and intangible.

    • @iMaSt0ner
      @iMaSt0ner 4 года назад

      While the sound aspect is another big factor when it comes to switch modifications, it ultimately comes down to personal preference as to how critical it is. I personally also love to film switches more for the sound profile change than the physical reduction of wobble, but that's not to say that the sound is the most important thing when it comes to filming switches. In addition, it's quite difficult to fully control the content creation geared towards sound profile changes and modifications due to the many governing factors towards sound characteristics. Even something such as the camera and microphone used to record along with headphones or speakers used by a viewer can greatly change expectation versus reality of how these modifications may affect a switch's sound. I'd have to respectfully disagree that the content was wasteful because of having no sound as it was able to remain objective and very scientific and it looks like A LOT of work was involved.

    • @michalsatin3727
      @michalsatin3727 4 года назад

      @@idyllicKeyboards Ahahahah Ok I understand what you mean but I will just slap it with preference as you said. For me, I can type as good if not better on a shitty rubber dome keyboard for 15 bucks at school. I care most about sound unless it is impossible to type like literally worse than a keyboard from wish. So for me, sound > everything else. For people who care about the wobble it's good, I was partly wrong

    You should consider grabbing a micrometer (if you haven't already!). Calipers are not accurate enough to give you accurate results at that resolution. Very good calipers can be consistently precise, but they tend to not be accurate enough. Micrometers tend to give you both precision and accuracy (and are an overall far more limited use tool!). Great video excepting the low audio volume. Subbed and looking forward to watching your other vids!

    Great video! For a long time I wanted to use a mechanical keyboard... cool factor, but ever since the using the original logitech cherries.. i was very disapointed of the wobble just putting my fingers on they keys. Then looking for reviews...a lot of reviewer conveiniently leave this out. I checked out the logitech G915 at a store a few years ago, and I like that type of "not wobble" but 💸💸💸. ff almost a decade.. I've given up on the search now.
    IMO, The design of most of these have a fundimental flaw.. imo.. being square. they coull easily be metal rount housing. this make holes easier to have manufacturing/molding tolerances. square is hard to manufacture. the cheap housing screems of lazy engineering or that plastic is just too expensive.

    Excellent video, I have a related question: recently got some black inks and lubed/filmed them with tx films (0.125 thickness) i had left over from other switches. I ran out however and got deskeys like films (well rated but off aliexpress). I didn't realize at the time that they're a lot thinner and flimsier. So I installed some of those on the remaining black inks. Now I can't say they're worse at reducing wobble, but it was pretty clear the inks with the thinner/softer films sounded significantly more high pitched (basically the same higher pitch of stock inks except these were lubed). Is this something you noticed too??

    I really dont see the point tbh like sure it makes it a bit stiffer but the reduced tolerance isnt necessarily beneficial to the operation of the switch and once you put a cap on and start typing you will barely notice the difference anyway. you are better off spending your money on some acoustic foam for the case to dampen the blow of the keystrokes and reduce sound reflections from the inside of the case.

      I am not an expert. But to my ears these sound as good as what Taeha shows in terms of sound. What do you think?

    Lol how many things can I do to a keyboard. Is switch film and switch lubing the only modifications outside of changing the housing spring or switch cap?

    Weird... I actually kinda like how there is a little bit of wobble to the switch, you cant have too much of it but i have never found it irritating or bad on mx style switches

    Hi may I ask for the boba u4t, many said that we don’t need to film it as it’s tight. Is this really true? Please let me know if you have tried it thanks

    I found that my tfue switches did have wobble but I found it very difficult to close the housings with tx films in them so I left then unfilmed. Idk how other ppl managed to film them

      They used different films.

      if you use deskey films they can still close even though its tight since they are a softer material. It does still take some force to close them though.

      @@ryantriesthings nah some ppl like andy nguyen managed to film them with tx films

      yeah it was weird cause some I could film (the ones in the video) but a few days later when I tried filming some other creams with TX, they just wouldnt accept them. So I've just been using deskeys since theyre compressible.

    It’s not a question of should it be filmed. It’s a question of how thick the film should be.

    So I see all switch housing and stems have some wobble. It's not metal to metal like a gas engine with very tight tolerances.
