I just bloomed my first zyopetalum myself. I am beyond pleased. I don't know if it's that it finally decided it liked it here or it likes it's new space. It was sitting off to the side in what I thought was pretty bright but indirect light. This summer out of desperation I moved them to sit directly in front of my south facing glass door and poof. Flower spike. Orchids can be very strange sometimes.
i discovered an orchid nursery near me ! i'm so exited to visit it this week end, I've never seen any other type of orchids than Phalaneopsis in nurseries. It's called Le paradis des orchidées it you are ever in the Montreal, QC , Canada region !
First, I just want to thank you for all of the amazing tips and information! Thanks to one of your older videos, my house is no longer the place orchid plants go to die! My husband bought me a beautiful phalaenopsis for our wedding anniversary in April, and not only is it alive, it's thriving; it's grown secondary branches on all 3 flower spikes (though one of the spikes was broken by our house cleaners, but that's a whole other story) which have bloomed (and are still in bloom), AND it's growing a new leaf AND a new flower spike! I'm so excited! I owe it all to you; thank you thank you thank you! Now on to my question: I noticed in your video about cutting the phal spikes that you say to cut as close to the base as possible, but that your cut spikes seem to be a little longer than "right at the base"; is there a good reason to keep a little length on them? Or is that just a personal preference? The one spike that broke for us, I only left about 1/2 inch or so (1.25cm)...is that too short? Thank you again!!
Hi Danni! I am 3 months new to your channel and I love the way you present the information. I am glad that you are attempting to devote an hour after each video, it works since I am up to date with watching most of them but for those that haven't binge watched your videos, I have seen new questions posted in old videos. Is there a way that you can go back and answer new questions posted in old video? Does RUclips allow you to organize the comments received by date of post? I ask this because I too posted a few questions in old videos and because of the volume of comments you have they went unanswered. I attempted to answer a comment by telling them what video you may have discussed the question in, but is there a way for u to go back?
Hi Danny, thanks for replying to my question yesterday! I'm from Queensland, Australia and I have to thank you for trialling semi-hydro with success, I've implemented it as well! Your videos are very informative.
Hey Danny, love your videos and learned so much from you (people at work always come to me for advice with their orchids :D) Also thanks to you I discovered that the greenhouse/storage from Orchids Deluxe is 10 min away from my home & they are just amazing! Have you ever done a video talking about your favourite online shops? Would be very nice :)
Hi, not really, I don't have many options for online shops as many are in Germany and transport is sometimes long. Some don't send to my country, so I am limited. But Orchids Deluxe is amongst my favs :)
@@MissOrchidGirl Ah okay I guess I am lucky then because I live in Germany ;D will go to my first orchid show tomorrow in the Netherlands & recently brought my first Zygo and Cymbidium - Thanks for encouraging me to buy something different than phals even though I love them :)
Hi Danny, I know you've gone over orchids that need a cool down to set blooms and that it can be used to force them but have you come across any orchids that are photo-period sensitive?
I've noticed that my sudu bulbs are getting wrinkled... is not enough water the only reason for this? Also can it be reversed with out over watering and killing the roots.
Hey Danny we like to see a psychopsis orchid in your collection a orange alien butterfly looks gorgeous rewards you forever try mendenhall hildos mottled leaf ones or kalihi alba yellow form and try to get a phal gigantea what is your thoughts about my suggestion?
Hi Dani, I've asked if you could do a video on growing sundew before but pretty sure you may have not seen it since it was on an older video I was watching. Anyway with cooler weather around the corner & many orchids coming inside till spring can you do a video on growing these wonderful plants? I had 3 & presently have one. HELP!
I have 2 zygos. They are giving me a hard time too. The leaves yellow and die making me feel like it's a disease. But if all of them so it...I must be doing something wrong. I wish I could figure it out, these are my favorite orchids 😭
Hello My friends, I live in south Florida and I’m having the hardest time figuring out the best way to repot my orchids. They are outside and the moss on top seems to keep them moist but I have to water it everyday. The bark is always wet. I think something is wrong. Any helpful ideas?
I don’t do well with Zygo either. I only have one and that’s it. I think the care instructions that’s out there are not accurate. Why?, it says not to wet leaves because it’s will leave black spots. It did have spots on its old mature leaves but I wet the new leaves and they are fine. I now sometimes left the media dry which was contrary to the previous care tips. I probably will experiment more on this plant....
Hi, Mimi Palmer is still in recovery mode, not sure if the Fusarium is gone, it may not be. Miltonia sunset had its old bulbs rot and now is growing from the newer bulbs, doing ok though :)
Very interesting video, I’ve never seen a Zygopetalum here in México I have a question, I have a cymbidium with fusarium, I cut the old pseudobulbs and the stem had the fusarium color ring but the pseudobulbs didn’t I’m very confused
Hi Danny, I think if you could notify us about the time that you chose to upload the video a day before ( create some kind of schedule so we can keep up with it and be prepared), you would have more people in the comment hour.
I concur, I was going to suggest the same thing. If you could plan out, say, a 2 week block at a time with days and times that you're planning to release vids, that would be helpful. Right now you're not getting as many people because we don't know when to look for your vids.
For me firebird is completely off the chart. For 2 years not, it starts growing new growths in the autumn and goes into winter cooling in the spring. I put her out in the spring and this summer it was full of flowers.
@@MissOrchidGirl Should I supplement with artificial light and what is the best type of fertiliser for the heavy feeders like dendrobiums? I saw your videos about fertilization but I am wondering specifically about the p:n:k. I usually use 20:20:20 very diluted for every watering.
A balanced fert is a good choice. If you think you cannot provide bright enough light you can supplement, but it's not a must to give super bright light.
Since we are talking about zygo's, I need another opinion. I have a zygo (found it online unde the name Trozy Blue), plump pseudobulbs, great roots, no leaves and all new growths get black. It was in semi hydro, changed it to organic. Gets lots of water, with very low TDS. Still it is the same, new growths get black. Water doesn't get on them and I do not mist. It was kept in the house, maximum 24-25 celsius all summer. Do you have any suggestion about what could be wrong?
Hi, in case of Cattleyas this could mean Calcium deficiency, it may be in this case too. Make sure you don't only use soft water, but fertilizer that contains calcium and magnesium, besides the other nutrients!
@@MissOrchidGirl I use a balanced fertilizer and a calcium + magnesium suppliment besides. I thought about calcium deficiency also, but I always add some.
Medium looks ok and is good quality? Also try this: remove a bit of the medium under the new growths so they don't touch it at all and try to see if the medium is good quality (doesn't smell weird or has molds)
Hey Danny!!!! My repeted question to see if this time i am lucky to get the response. I practically know all the pests on orchids, but can’t know how to recognice fungus or virus. I have lost a lot of phals and don’t know if its my care or there were fungus or virus!!! Thanks a lot

MissOrchidGirl thanks I will watch them, but another question: if it’s a virus or a fungus it’s spreadable (meaning it can attack rapidly other orchids??) through air?
Fungal infections can yes, but really it's more common through water splashes. Viruses can only be passed through direct sap contact, so no worries there :)
