    I love doing these critiques. I've been stopped so many times by people who tell me how helpful these types of videos are. That's why I offer different options for people to get their work critiqued. This time around, the moral of the story is consistency. I think their work is solid and with a few tweaks will really POP!!!!

    As a parent I can tell you that you love seeing your kid in pretty much anything. Part of the reason I got into photography is because I wanted good pictures of my kids. You should have one. A pro like you could do amazing things. You'll look at the pictures and find yourself grinning without even realizing it. Not just because they're good pictures, but because something you love more than anything is in them. Just looking at them makes you feel good.

    Yeah I have to agree about the sun glow. Either tone it down or don't have it at all. You want to stay away from any effect that anyone these days can add via apps & software. Lens flares & glows can look tacky & unimpressive because most people use these same exact effects & its simple to add. My opinion on fake backgrounds is that try to use very high quality ones & the ones that match the perspective perfectly. Finally, criticise your own work heavily. Be hard on yourself to the point where you will look back at your older work & you become shocked how easily those mistakes should never been. I like the baby photos more then the other shots. The other photos weren't composed correctly among other minute things. But do not worry, I know you will continue to learn. We all do. Stay blessed.

    • @Chromedbustop
      @Chromedbustop 2 года назад

      @@Jindujun There is some truth to that, but I think people use that as an excuse too much. More often than not a client doesn't know exactly what they want because they're not knowledgeable about such things. You're the trained photographer, you're supposed to be able to give them more than they want because you have the knowledge and experience they don't. They're trusting you to know what makes an image good or not. That's why they're hiring you to take the images rather than doing it themselves.
      And they might settle for something that they THINK is good because they don't actually know that it's not. Like if someone just eats fast food all the time, they might think that's good. But would you settle for just giving them fast food because it's what they want?
      Now if a client absolutely insists on a certain look, then fine, ultimately it's their choice. But that shouldn't be an excuse to present subpar work.

    @1:15 I agree this image is edited heavily with content aware, strong shadow manipulation, blur, and I definitely agree there is likely an artificial sun introduced into this scene. This photograph may have also been created by chroma methods (background shot + portrait) but I have my doubts considering how well referenced the subject is with respect to the bridge. I would have shot this without the tiara. The bridge itself has very strong lines(the railing, the angle cross brace, the upright, and the angle siding just above the head) and placing an additional item with strong lines tend to reverse the leading lines for some viewers, serve as a distraction to others, and may blend in with the bridge background to others as well. The red dress/makeup was nice and complimented the colors with the bridge. The hair is very flattering and would actually separate cleanly from the bridge background without the tiara. What might kick this photograph into next gear(in my opinion) is to keep the lighting fairly natural in the background and let the grass and trees in the background fall into a darker green. Regardless of which direction your might take, I do recommend to keep this location as one of your go tos and visit this scene mid to late day during summer, fall, winter, and in snow conditions. Take photographs at each visit at different exposures. Use these photographs as reference when adding in a sun or adjusting exposure/highlights/shadows. In addition, walk around the bridge and take note if you can incorprate the bridge in a different aspect/direction. Also, when using content aware make sure the replacement is artifact free.

    Jared, for the photo of the girl on her back with the football, what do you if some element in the background is always going to be not level? Example, you said the grass is uneven. but if you fix the level to get the grass even, wouldn't that make the stadium & seating tilted? I'd think that it's important to get the structure level, since my guess is the grass is uneven. Just wondering, thanks!

    • @Chromedbustop
      @Chromedbustop 2 года назад

      I don't think he was talking about the level but the perspective. Like the intent of the image seemed to be to have the player centered but they're not. The lines of the railings on either side of the center bleachers are at different angles. The image has a lot of straight lines and so the lack of symmetry is more prominent, especially when it seems like having symmetry was the goal.

    On a note about cropping the senior photo, you have to realize many people frame these photos with mats that further crop an image. So you absolutely want to have enough headroom and space around. Same is true if printing on a stretched canvas, you need that extra space around, then you'll get that nice tight shot in your final piece. But you are right about there's often too much space above when there's not enough below in many of the other following photos.

There is definitely a hierarchy in photography, there are "bad", "better", "good" or "great" photos, and as an experienced photographer who knows what he is talking about, you gotta stand for what you believe is good photography.

    I like the color pallet of the baby shots, making them almost monocromatic. My hand was also itching to reach the contrast slider, but flatness is a style, just like black and white and much other. The one at the football field. i dont think it is off, all of the other lines are horizontal, I think it is the running track that is turning giving the illution that it is off. People kissing dogs is wierd. Having the number 7 in focus, if it is important somehow, you can do that but your eyes should be in that same line, so they are also sharp or it will breake a photo. Baby photos are a bit wierd to me, because they make these victorian era like images, and they dont tell a story. It's like those photo walls with a hole in, where you stik your head in and the wall is painted so it looks like you are a cowboy or something. It only tells the story that you were silly enough to do it, and the baby photo only tells the story that you went to a photographer to get a baby images. If you as an artist use a baby as a model to sell baby stuff, then it's ok, but if you are doing a portrait for the parrents to hang on the wall, then... well it is cute for about 2 seconds, but it is not a memory. However if you are trying to sell baby images, then these are perfect.
    The problem with critique is that images dont speak for them selves so we dont know what the story that the photographer was trying to tell. Have you taken an image to get a good critique or to say something about a product, a memory, or what ever. And often they just become someone who doesn't understand your work, dumping on it and telling you to take the same photos as all the other guys and never really stand out. So good or bad critique doesn't always reflect if you have made a good or bad image, or even if it works or not.
    I think they were clearly taken by a very capable photographer and I like to see the awareness towards the color pallet really shines through

    I enjoy your content. The one thing about photography is there is gathering content and for that I appreciate your perspective on so much different gear, however, the 2nd part of photography is developing the content. We don't use lightrooms anymore, but pretty much all that we could do in the past behind the door we can do in front of a computer. So, just as we might have reviews of photopaper, enlargers, lighting, etc, looking for the best equipment that will allow us to be more productive, what should we be looking for in a computer, types of hardware, so that when we remove the CF Express card that promotes 1700-1400 read and write speeds and we plug that baby into a USB port, we aren't downloading at dial up speeds? I teach yearbook, and kids will come back with 1,000's of images, only to have to wait 20 minutes for files to transfer and even once they have, importing takes another eternity--far from productive yet the majority of bodies use XQD/CF Express. Would love to get your opinion as to what types of computers would serve us the best. Thanks.

      Basic photography doesn’t change depending on what camera you have. Like I said unless there is a known fault in a model (focus is off because of a defect from the factory, etc) or you are pushing something to the extreme limits (FPS, 1/8000th of a second, etc) the camera doesn’t matter. A skilled photographer can easily shoot rings around a newbie with the greatest equipment using a 10 year old body. People get hung up on equipment and needing the latest and greatest. I think most of your critique is valid. However repetitive statements that maternity,baby pics etc etc are not your cup of tea are getting old. That’s not a critique it’s a bias. If don’t don’t have kids or babies you don’t understand. Most baby pics are done in a controlled environment often with backdrops etc.

    Are you critiquing these as professional photos? Or are you critiquing them as what people would want or be satisfied with?

    I loved this critique. You don't have any babies, you maybe don't do that kind of photography but you still help out in a meaningful matter.

    I love these videos! I get great tips from them. But I mainly shoot automotive and landscapes, would you be willing to comment on those too? Just wondering as I don't usually see you shoot them haha
    Keep up the great work! 💪🏼

    Surprised he missed that the maternity shot was mimicking the Madonna/Virgin Mary. This helps explain going for an artificial almost painted look and the random sun, but I still don't get why you would do it unless the kid was a bastard.

    Yeah fake background shot and last one didn’t do anything for me. Last shot needed some background light, just a bump, the baby is fading into the background

    I don't like the overedited look which is too common when I see photos posted and it is becoming far too common. Less is more in my opinion.

    I hate fake sun flairs. Making someone look like an Oompa Loompa because you added such a strong fake Sunflare is just wrong. I have a couple of photographers in my area that 90% of the photos have fake sun flares in it. A natural Sunflare looks so much better when you can get it. If not go without
