Terror is my fav book ever read it twice so far, I also enjoyed Abominable I was so absorbed by it, then went on to read the SF Hyperion series which was also great. Love Dan Simmons.
@@danteshakespeare188 it realy is, and its not that difficult, perfect gateway book for science fiction fr. You get perfect examples for almoust every subgenre of sf
This was one of my favorite books of last year! I'm so glad to see more hype! I spent the entirety of the time reading this book eating fruit because the scurvy was the most terrifying thing haha.
The Terror was the first novel I'd read by Simmons and I was gobsmacked. I've read 1000's of books and the Terror is the finest piece of literature I've ever read. After reading it I went out and bought his entire backlog of books he's written. Drood is outstanding. The Hyperion series is mind-blowing. Carrion comfort is tremendous. All his books are worth reading. IMO he's the finest living author out there. He ticks every box when it comes to the written word and can write in any genre. A true genius. Great review mate :)
There was a great exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau on the Franklin Expedition last year. It was so strange seeing broken dishes from the actual ships, and walking through replicas. The Inuit knowledge surrounding the wreck was quite interesting to hear about as well.
I have consumed 95% of Dan Simmons books. The Terror is a book I read annually. It was so exciting when artifacts of this expedition were discovered along with the TV's adaptation, wonderful. The novel, the author, and the entire ship's crew deserve all the ink they can get. The Terror is an epic, fantastic book of facts and fiction splashed out over 700 pages and it could have been 700 more for all I care. I worship Dan Simmons writing. It;s 2022 Dan, what's next?
Fully agree. Terror was the first novel I read of his and afters reading 1000s of novels it became the best I've ever read. Bought Simmons back catalogue and read them all. Easily the greatest living author imo.
Omega strain I think it's called out soon. Historical fiction again I think. Nazis and twin scientists in this one. It's been ages since he had a book out. I heard he'd been unwell and he's in his early 70's...hope he lives another 30 years with good health included.
I liked "Drood" and "Carrion Comfort" by Dan Simmons, but if you're looking for something more along the lines of "The Terror", I think a lot of people liked his novel, "The Abominable".
I have only seen the show so far, now plan to read the book. It's a shame that you never made a review of the series, it would would have been interesting to see you compare them in reverse order.
Great review! I finished this a few weeks ago after having read "The Man Who Ate His Boots" (which is a historical account of the search for the Northwest Passage) and learned that there was a novel based on that expedition ... and I had already been a huge fan of ocean-based novels and short stories before that, so that was an easy decision to make and one I did not regret ... loved almost everything about it. This was my first Dan Simmons book and it won't be my last. Nice to see somebody who shares my enthusiasm!
I didn’t know The Terror was a such a tome or that it had a tv show! So, thanks! I have heard of it and you definitely made me want to read it. 🖤Jessica
Hi! My intro to Dan Simmons was a book called "Drood" where Simmons takes the last 5 years of Charles Dickens's life, and fictionalizes it. Dickens was working on The Mystery Of Edwin Drood when he died, so that factors into the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it ... and that was even BEFORE I became a Dickens mega-fan. Next, I read "The Terror". Another great read! Glad you enjoyed it. :-) I also read "Black Hills" Also good, but maybe not quite as good as the first two. What Simmons seems to do well in these books, is take something historical, and fictionalize it in a way, almost to make up supernatural or SF-like explanations for the actual events. So much fun! Give these other titles a try!
Just recently finished the book & really enjoyed your review. I was on the fence with this book I really enjoyed it but felt the ending was unsatisfying for me.
I've read "summer of night" and "a winter haunting". Dan Simmons is really good and I just picked up The Terror. Excited to read it as per my "book a week" challenge, starting in 2020. Here we go!
Just finished it. Really enjoyed most of it. I loved the supernatural elements of the Tuunbaq, it really felt like a fascinating interpretation of Inuit folklore, which was really refreshing. I will say the ending seemed a big strange and out of the blue to me personally. I was confused when there were another 100+ pages after the point that I thought the story would’ve ended. Also a strange focus on sexual stuff in the story, not what I expected but it never got to a point where I gave it up. Overall I loved the horror elements and the monster, the dedication to the history was nice too. ~8/10
Just ordered my copy on Amazon. Kinda hoping for the cover you have but I think it's a newer publication cause it has the little AMC channel series bubble on it. I love huge books! Digging your content, and you're suuuper cute 🤐 subscribed!!
I just finished The Terror a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I loved the detail and atmosphere. Its the only novel that I've read that made me feel physically tired when reading it though! The book is also scary but not unsettling...the creepiness doesn't leap out of the book, so to speak. Now, Dan Simmon's Song of Kali does just that. It did for me anyway. The novel really, really creeped me out like no other.
I’m 100 pages into the Terror right now. Great so far. Recommended by Simmons… please read Summer of Night and A Winter Haunting. Coming of age horror like Stephen King’s It. Fantastic
I read this in November and really loved it. I read Children of the Night, A Winter Haunting & Summer of Night by him too and definitely worth the read. Thanks for sharing. Just subscribed. Peace love and happiness ~ Tracey
I really enjoyed the Terror, though I super was not into the vocal cord playing thing. I'm a big fan of Old Boat, Terrible Accident books (Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch and the North Water by Ian McGuire are two of the best, though North Water totally stole from Jamrach's Menagerie) and snow horror (Dark Matter and Thin Air by Michelle Pavers especially) so it's not a surprise. The TV show has done a lot of weird things with the book, especially with the Tuunbaq, but it's still really good. Edit: I don't know how you can access it but there is a really good documentary about what actually happened to the HMS Erebus (and Terror, to some extent) on channel 4. It's called Hunt for the Arctic Ghost Ship.
I've had North Water by Ian McGuire on my radar to pick up for a while. I'm going to have to get myself a copy soon. I saw this comment a while ago and didn't get the chance to reply, but I looked up the documentary after and was able to watch it. Thanks for telling me about it :)
I just finished it yesterday. Good book (a bit long and alot of unnecessary padding) Great review. I agree with his writing of the isolation and conditions. I was cold just reading it lol. Going to watch the show next!
Which version did you read? Mine was a little under 800 pages, however I learned that there are versions that are over 900. I thought my copy could have been 'thinned down' a little. Great book though.
My version is 936 pages long. I got so caught up in the World of the Franklin arctic expedition that it never seemed to drag for me. I even loved those long, drawn out officers meetings in the captains quarters discussing the finer details of those pesky Goldner tin cans and how much rum and lime juice they still had in ships supply to keep the crew from going mad and succumbing to scurvy. Superb book.
