Kovalan and Kannagi were inhabitants of Poompuhar, which was part of the Chola kingdom. After Kovalan and Madhavi fall out and Kovalan is bankrupt, Kovalan and Kannagi wanted to start their lives afresh and move to Madurai, capital of the Pandya kingdom. The anklet story starts there and not in Poompuhar.

Kannagi, Kovalan and Madhavi are from Pompuhar(Chozha Kingdom),
Kannagi and Kovalan went to Madurai ( Capitol of Pandyas) and Kovalan got killed by a misunderstanding from the orders of Pandya King Nedunchezhiyan. Kannagi proves his innocence and burns down all the unrighteous people in Madurai and leaves for Chera Kingdom where she enters heaven and becomes a goddess.
The 3 truths of Silapathikaram are:
1.Those who did misuse their political powers will be punished by Dharma.
    2. Righteous ones will be hailed by the people.
    3. Karma will definitely comes back to you no matter what.1.அரசியல் பிழைத்தோர்க்கு அறம் கூற்றாகும்.

The more I listen to her the more I get angry ....she doesn't know anything....about south indian history ...... And it's rich literature in tamil and kannada.......she only says of Tamil....there are numerous kingdoms from Karnataka which ruled out country. She is manipulating the history.

The "History Professor" is telling a wrong version of Cilappatikāram.
Kovalan and Kannagi are from Poompuhar, and they go to Madurai where Kovalan tries to sell Kannagi's anklet.
Also, the estimated time period of this epic is aroung 2 AD.

As a south Indian I feel the story was not recited as it actually is!! seriously not justified... the power this story holds up and the importance could have been expressed better ... disappointed big time !!!
The couple Kannagi & Kovalan were from the place called Poompuhar which was part of Chola Kingdom,
they travelled from here to MADURAI to start their new Life , MADURAI which was ruled by THE PANDIAYANS
and story goes as kovalan tries to sell his wife's anklets to start a business and people there holds him captive for the theft and thus Kovalan was produced in-front of the pandiyan king.... the Majesty - without much interrogation .. just seeing the anklets which had similar appearance to the one that was of his Queen's.. punishes kovalan and orders for execution.... the kings orders were intstantly followed ... and KOVALAN was DEAD!!!!!!!! (the speaker here did not mention this !!)
Knowing this Fact ... with full of Anger, immense pain and sorrow ... Kannagi rushes to the court confronting the King for Justice and the Wrong that he Did...!!
She stands tall and fights against the King.
The King asks her to Prove if those Anklets are hers!
Kannagi Asks the king what was inside his Queen's anklets ?? MUTHU ( Pearls) replies - the King
she laughs and says ... mine has MANIKYAM ( The Red Rubies - not diamonds !!! dont know why the speaker giving wrong reference)
saying that ... Kannagi asks the king to break his Queen's recently found anklets to prove the truth... when he throws the same on the floor
the RED rubies splatter ..... Proving Kannagi and Kovalan's Innocence
the King immediately realizes his mistake and seeks forgiveness from kannagi ... but she says nothing can bring back her innocent husband and the life she has Lost!!!
Thus Burning down the Whole CITY of MADURAI of her pain and angerr
she did not burn the whole city without a reason !!!
Sad that ... this could have told clearly.

Instead of saying anklet u should say silambu… those are not like which we wear in the modern days…. The rubys are inside the silambu… it is not made up of diamonds… if u don’t know anything
y r u saying the story madam… Ranveer we Tamilians are feeling bad about this false podcast of urs… how ridiculous this is… how can u spread such wrong information in the entire podcast

    • @unpackedwonders

Correct.. Anklet is entirely different jewellery. Silambu is important word to convey. That's why it is called silapathikaram
