2017 Ford Escape vs 2017 Honda CR-V Compact SUV Comparison

  • The first challenge we set up for our Honda CR-V long-term tester is the Ford Escape, refreshed for 2017, but it remains a sporty little ute that provides a dose of excitement along with its practicality.
The CR-V, on the other hand, is completely new for 2017, and appeals more to our logical sides with its efficiency and value.
With the Escape packing the punchy 2.0-litre Ecoboost and the CR-V a thrifty 1.5-litre turbo, the decision might ultimately come down to whether you prefer more sport or utility in your compact crossover.

My 2014 Escape 1.6T gets 31 mpg all day on my work/kid commutes and just got 35 mpg on a 1000 mile vacation. Recently got from my wife since she needed a minivan and was pleasantly surprised coming from her normal 24-25mpg average before I got it. Shows driving style matters big as I'm slow on acceleration and braking on purpose.

Love my Ford Escape 2017. I am 5'11, absolutely no issues with the seats. Has a more efficient interior than the Crv and a great sync 3 system, not to mention an enjoyable ride that puts a smile in your face.

I have owned my 2017 Escape FWD for over a year. Mine cost just over 24K. It has the base radio and interior but it has the 2.0 with trailer tow package. This Compact SUV is to die for and with my snow tires mounted on steel wheel and factory wheel covers it goes thru the snow very well. Not AWD but at least a 2K savings. I'm so proud this American Company can build a better vehicle than the competition. I know the Japanese car snobs won't accept it but that's there loss.

Thank you for all pros/cons comments. I just bought an used one ,2015 basic Ford Escape 1,6l ,4 c.,certified used car with 32.000km . I didn't get too many information from the dealer ,not any owner manual , so owning the first time a Ford ,SUV.. I am happy with the driving in the worst winter condition in Alberta ,seems to have a good contact with the terrain, and learn the features as I drive.

Great job! Love the Escape, but there often seems to be reliability issues. The CRV might be a little boring, but it's rock solid in reliability and resale. I like the looks of the Escape much better, but the CRV grows on you. Fuel economy is excellent with the CRV.

  • @dustinmorris13

The Escape is definitely best to drive, the most power and thankfully no CVT. It's also the best looking one with it's more conservative looking exterior and European interior. Resale value isn't the best unfortunately.

I've driven both of these and the CRV is better overall. However, the Escape Titanium with the 2.0 is more fun to drive overall isn't that bad. Additionally there are big discount's available and financing offers on the Escape. The CRV is the best in this category but the Escape beats out the RAV-4. I leased a 2017 escape SE awd, eco 2.0l turbo, sport package appearance and tech package. zero down and I really like it so far. the extra torque is nice when you constantly go up big hills. however fuel economy is not the best but worth it to me to be able to accelerate going up hills at any speeds with decent loads in the vehicle. the sport appearance package makes the escape look much more appealing as well.

Very thorough reviews. I have a few comments. I recently took a 2017 Titanium Escape for a lengthy test, being that I'm considering trading in my Fusion. 1) I live on the east coast of Canada and am very familiar with broken pavement, ruts, bumps etc. The Escape I sampled had 10000kms on it, and I found it extremely composed. It swallowed every bump and rut thrown at it. No jarring at all. No rattles. This one was equipped with Michelin Latitude tires. 2) moving from the cloth buckets in my Fusion to the leather seats in the Escape, it did take some time to adjust. I felt like I was sliding around some, and lacked a little lateral support. All things equal, I prefer the seats in the Fusion, but I did get accustomed to the seats in the Escape. The leather is soft and as the drive went on I did "sink into them". No strange bumps or unevenness. I'd have mentioned it to Ford upon returning it. Perhaps there was an issue. 3) Sync 3 is fantastic. Ford has moved away from Microsoft. Blackberry has developed the current product.

My husband and I just bought a 2018 Brand New Ford Escape Titanium as our family car and my work car. I was presently sharing my Sons 2012 Mustang v6 with him and I have to say there is no comparsion between the two vehicles. I was going to buy a Mustang GT but I needed to be practical especially at my age. But the Escape is a nice vehicle: a smooth ride, lots of storage space, love the adjustible seats and I lots of storage. I have to go back to the dealer to go over the vehicles features but I am sure I will love my new Escape. But no Ford vehicle can match a Mustang. I will miss it for its beauty, quick pickup and speed on the road its just the best car Ford ever made.

The 10 year old Escape is still better than the CR-V, especially in the power and transmission department. I hope Honda ditches the CVT soon, it is a terrible transmission. The Escape feels more road bumps due to its sport tuned suspension, it isn't a touring suspension like the CR-V. Now the Escape is dated, but I still purchased one because it's still a better driving, more powerful, and more European styled vehicle.

Sure you'd "take" it, but if you were limited on funds and actually had to buy one, the Escape wins. Tough to find a 5 year old Honda anything for less than a brand new competitor. Their resale is truly inflated due to years of great engineering and reliability. The others have caught up and are a better deal by far, especially young used.

I bought a 2017 Escape SE 2.0 front wheel drive use with 30,000 miles, 19" wheels, blind spot, large touch screen, and power rear gate in 09/2019 for $17,200, That same CRV as in an EX model would have cost about $22,000 plus. Go Ford !! Fun and fast ! Oh EX and EXL CRV's had a pretty bad oil consumption issued due to turbo pressure. So if you're a CRV owner CHECK THE OIL ! Honda IS fixing this issue under a warranty.

Agreed....I got a 2014 1.6 SE 2 years after new for $14k and it's still going strong. Kills the mileage too at 31-32mpg 50/50, so yeah, same here. I don't need to puff my chest for a popular name plate over price.

MPG in the teens in a 2.0 Escape? I can’t imagine it unless you hold it to the floor every time you take off. I’ve owned a 2015 Escape AWD for two years with the 2.0 and I’ve never seen under 26mpg. I always get over 30mpg on any trip and have seen as high as 36mpg. (I do always use premium fuel although Ford doesn’t require it, in the eco-boost engines.)

I know this old, but I still see comments like this in newer vids.
They drive these cars alot harder than we would normally do. So they're going to see worse average mileage. But they have to put the vehicles to test to get a better review.
Look up a website called fuelly. You can see reports of what ever vehicle and engine option. All done by regular people.
The over all average for the 2.0 on there is 25mpg.
With some showing up to 30. Some as low at 14.
But you can click it and many will show what conditions they drive the most in to help you see what makes the economy hit happen

  • @satinsangel1688

CR-V had no get up and go vs the Escape, but that’s also why it gets better gas mileage. I miss a few features of my CR-V but love my Escape more. The infotainment unit on the CR-V was horrendously outdated, awful to use, and would disconnect from my phone ALL the time. The dealership was less than helpful on trying to fix any issues. Escape’s infotainment unit is where it’s at! Plus since the smart plug was at the bottom of the center console, underneath the stuff you’d naturally put in a center console it was inconvenient and irritating to use, Escapes is much more convenient and thought out. 😆❤️👌

They actually have pretty great reliability and resale for nearly all of their models. My family has owned fords such as the f-150, edge, escape and focus across model generations and they hold up extremely well and keep their value for trade-ins and selling.

Yep, I have owed Fords for 30 years, and all of them I've owned were pretty good cars. My dad and Grandfather also owned many fords they liked. So IDK where all of this hate comes from. I think folks just hate America.

It's fucking amazing how big, spacious, powerful, efficient, the new hondas are. It destroys the 1.5 ecoboost in terms of power, efficiency, and reliability even though the CR-V is bigger and slightly heavier. Acura build quality at Honda prices. Amazing.

    • @davidfreeman3083
      @davidfreeman3083 7 лет назад

Oso 11 Yeah of course, but is it always good to be lighter? Except that light always save money in anyways. But for styling, sometimes big thus heavy would look nice as well, not to mention usually larger means more comfortable. It even answers why CRV is more spacious while it's shorter: cuz it puts small and light stuff inside. I heard that the back seats are not very comfortable in CR-V

Like the European premium look and surely better rearward visibility (look at the C pillars) of the Ford but the Honda's more well rounded. 27mpg in the city with the Honda is quite good for this class.

Excellent review. I see driven both and I agree with every word. It comes down to preference. The Escape is more fun if s drive and has a panoramic sunroof option that the CR-V does not. Those two things are make or break for me. However , I do admit the more practical option is the CR-V , especially because of it's space and fuel economy.

  • @divisioneight
    @divisioneight 7 лет назад

I agree with your assessment of these two very good small SUV crossovers. However Ford is offering rebates at purchase off their products bringing pricing closer to the CR-V on similarly equipped vehicles. Honda is not bargaining as much with their CR-V's as they are very popular. Honda can let the buyer bid as they are moving the CR-v's out of the lots fairly well, even the base LX models. I like the CR-V interior however can live with the Escape "barbarism" interior. The Escape larger engine is certainly a hoot, but with mileage just a mpg or two north of a full sized Jeep Cherokee, and costing as much for the base, well equipped Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, you have to ask why.

If you;re comparing power ration than you guys should've pick the 1.5T of the Escape vs. the CRV 1.5T for a fair companion. However, even without the 2.0T power of the escape the CRV still win this comparison test. Lastly, the escape will drop in resale value.

Only reason I would choose a Escape over the CRV is the transmission. Why did Honda put that lousy CVT transmission in it starting in 2015. For this reason only I would choose the escape. Pre 2015 I lean slightly towards the CRV

Neat comparison, AutoGuide! Personally, I would go for the more spacious, ergonomic, and stylish CR-V. The Escape seems to remind me of a budget vehicle at times. While, the Escape seems just a step behind the CR-V in its more upscale features. By no means, both vehicles are great. Buyers just have to weigh the pros and cons, and see which they favor or dislike more.
I cannot wait to conduct my full in-depth review of these CUV's. Keep it up! 👍
