I’ve had a speed 6 for about a year and let me tell you, one of my favorite cars ever. I don’t think I’ll ever sell it. Mine makes 330whp and it’s an absolute blast, when it’s working. They’re prone to faults so if anyones looking to buy one be sure to do your research. Great video!
I used to really want one of these back in 07. Couldn’t afford one so I copped the regular Mazda6. I enjoyed that car. I now drive a 16 Mustang GT. I am happy
nice to see another review on the MS6. i owned a 2007 model for about 3 years, put about 40k on it, and i had done about every bolt on you could think of without opening the motor up. the ms6 really is an awesome car to drive, and its relative rarity adds to its allure in my opinion. my favorite part of the car had to be the LSD out of the RX-8 which really gave the ms6 handling characteristics that were hard to match from its rivals the STi and the Evo VII + unfortunately i got tired of the car being in the shop with broken diff mounts and ultimately a cracked rear differential casing, even though i would never dump the clutch or launch the car from a dead stop. i think that in the future ill definitely pick up another example and do a full build, as i believe thats what this car deserves.
In college, I saved up for 8 months straight and was able to buy a 1-owner '06 in red with 60K miles for like 10 grand (back when that was possible). Ended up selling it to my dad when I graduated to get a 16 WRX. Miss it all the time but happy it's still in the family. Lol I remember loading up my friends in the back and doing donuts in the upstate NY snow, gah good times with this car..
I had an 06 MS6 for about 6 years. It was fun to drive, except in the snow. Fine in snow on flat roads, but if you have to stop on a hill in the snow in traffic, good luck getting going again. I had the 18" tires and the brakes prevented putting smaller rims on (some trims had 17's?) and my tire guys said the 18" snow tires weren't going to do much.
My parents had the option between a RX-8 and a Mazda 6 black in the year 2006. We bought the Mazda 6 brand new trouble free car up to 300,000 miles until I got into a car crash with it on my way to prom. I will always love this car till I die!
I love this car. If I didn’t need something with a warranty back in 2016 I’d have had one of these. I agree with another viewer in calling it a classic of its era.
I currently dd a 06 ms6 thats tuned around 370hp with some go fast stuff done. Reliability for these cars were hit and miss, but i definitely catch a lot of people off guard when i hear someone rev their car or whatever. By far the best hooking car at launch from a dead stop.
I've got a mazdaspeed 3. They are absolutely a blast to drive and very very slept on in the hot hatch world. They are legit fast and the 280torque make them insane.
Thanks, My last Mazda 6 was a first generation 07 6i 5-door which I loved and traded in on a 19 CX-5 Signature with over 166,000 trouble free miles. I loved the first generation 5-door and wish Mazda still made a 6 5-door.
I miss my 2006 speed6. It was amazing. Felt like a proper sports car. I had to switch it because of traffic jam and manual trans and the 93octane required.
Hot take here but I think this IS the best car Mazda has ever made. It handles extremely well, looks sleeper enough and is just a perfect Evo/WRX competitor that is just as fun and usable as a daily. I really wish more of them would've been made so that I can finally have one of my own. Had one for a week a few months ago and its just leagues better than its competitors. All that and this is about a stock version, tune and build the thing and you got a AWD sleeper manual car that can double as a daily. Bummer it was never refreshed...
When you say Granading itself... this same issue is the same in the 2007 Mazda CX7 and it literally blew up when I got off the freeway. it threw a rod through the bottom of the block and died. and Blew 2 turbos all under 60k miles
More stock example than mine and awesome to see the review! It's a fantastic car and if you find one pick it up, there's definitely quirks but you can work around em ❤️ those gen1 speed3 wheels were confusing me for a second lol!
Yes, it’s the same 2.3 that’s in the Mazdaspeed3 and CX-7, and I believe an updated version is the basis for the engine in the Mustang Ecoboost, Focus RS, and Ranger
The CX-7 and Mazdaspeed3 used this exact engine, though it was detuned to an extent for the CX. The Mustang's EcoBoost is still derived from the same family as this one, but it has been through a lot of changes.
@@JakeyyFD huh, good to know. I guess it would make sense to actually fit some less performance-oriented parts when converting the engine to crossover spec

Interesting to note that the engine is made by Ford. My 2012 Speed 3, also a Ford engine, is so-far-so-good, though; no complaints. As for the torque steer, it’s a real issue, but takes about 5 minutes to get used to. I don’t know of any car that doesn’t have some quirk. Does the Speed 6 sacrifice any horsepower due to being AWD?
The engine is made by Mazda using the Ford parts bin. There are many modifications that Mazda engineers made that are far superior than Ford's version which is the Ecoboost 2.3L. Most notable is that after 16 years most haven't blown a head gasket unlike the Ecoboost motors on the Mustang and Focus RS.

I’ve owned 2 Speed 3’s before and have always been curious about the Speed 6 and if I should buy one. Anyone been in my shoes with owning a speed 3 and 6? Tell me why which one is better than the other
Hey no disrespect.. but your wrong about the stock Wheels on the speed6 you said that they are just speed3 Wheels.. if you really look the speed3 Wheels are different and I like the speed6 wheels allot better
Those are not the original wheels from my knowledge? I think those are the oem wheels that came on the speed3's cause I have an 06 speed6 and my wheels dont look like those ones
The rear diff mounting design is pure ass so is how the rear shocks mount. Clutch pedal mounts love to crack like the RX8 and the body feels somewhat narrow. The engine is as reliable is its owner’s maintenance schedule is consistent. The top cubby/storage door tends to break fair easily. The hood is heavy and some owners have a hate for the heatsoaking TMIC. The front “grill” should’ve been an actual grill. The teeth on the plastic gears in the window motor tend to break over time. The reason why they didn’t have “mazdaspeed” branding everywhere because this was supposed to be marketed towards to grown up, older kind of guys. This is a dad sedan. Straight competitor to the Legacy GT of the time. Trunk struts tend to go out. They could’ve kept the rear foldable seats. The early adoption of direct injection ruined any potential the engine could’ve had without going to port injection. Rods are weak. HPFP is pretty much needed before any other mod. Stock, handles like a boat. If the fog light mounts had grills that would’ve been better. It lasted 2 model years only for NA and for everywhere else 3 years. The US difference is actually the 274 crank hp and a slightly longer final drive if I recall correctly. Driveshaft is unserviceable and trash. Even at stock power levels it’s advised not to launch the car due to the terrible rear diff mount design and weak transfer case caps. When I have mine setup, definitely come and drive it.
yikes tell us how you really feel! lol but no really, i had to get rid of mine as the rear diff mounts kept failing even after not launching the car and having good aftermarket mounts from JBR. eventually the diff casing cracked and i had to let it go. just too frustrating of a car.
I bought this car brand new off the lot in 2006 it has been quite literally the most unreliable car I have ever owned and I’ve kept it bone stock and I always have done regular maintenance, But man it’s also the funniest car I ever drove ! Blast in the snow too, It’s a damn shame how unreliable it was😢
In late 2000s the regular Mazda 6 was nothing special; Camry was a big upgrade. The 3 from that period is made out of crappy metal, all rusty in winter places with salted roads, so these may be too. That part that opens on the dash breaks on fords too.
Omg this is rough. I’m sure he means well but this has to be the most clueless, inane, uneducated review of a speed6 on RUclips. The “restricted tune” from 06 to 07 didn’t help their blown motor issue (like 4 hp would make a difference lol, everyone knows these motors pop all the time, speed3 first and second gen and all the 6s, they’re all the same) And no, no one had hpfp issues on stock motors at any rpm or gear and no you weren’t buying an upgraded hpfp at Autozone lol. You need hpfp internals (Autotech) or a whole pump (CPE) from the aftermarket only and only if it was modded (intake/exhaust/tune etc). And the speed6 has the biggest best backseat (headroom/legroom) out of all the mazdaspeeds?? (3/6/protege/miata)… no way!! And no, no one that knows fuck from shit about Mazdas, mazdaspeeds or hot hatch’s in general ever thought that speed3 was AWD. This is not a common misconception. And to state that surprisingly even though the speed 3 and 6 have the same motor the 6 doesn’t have “godawful torque steer” is the final clue that this guy doesn’t know anything about anything. (Pro tip, it’s the drivetrain) I wish him well but good god this review was brutal.
That is so obnoxious, a sports car that honestly isn't going to change positions all that much has the switch. My 2 trucks which depending on load, which actually could use that switch, does not

I had a fully loaded 05 hatch. I loved that car. Got it up to 210k miles but the engine started running rough and cutting out. It was too rusty to be worth saving. If I could find a clean, well maintained wagon with a 5 speed I'd jump on it.
I had one and and it was a beast in snow. I think this and the Volvo v60r were absolutely slept on and are who we should thank for the likes of the focus RS/ST
It's like an RX-8 but without all the bs that comes with owning an RX-8 🤣🤣
Nah these cars are POS too everything fails
@@BitcoinTo150K can vouch for this fun car to drive expensive to own since everything fails in one way or another nevermind the fact that they rust out so fast
@@clonecaptian yup I went through 3 engines one stock new replacement, two built engines different builders over 5 years. Replaced every single mount on vehicle, shifter cables, wheel bearings, one transmission, rack and pinion, stock turbo died, had rust, ect. I could go on and on was biggest money pit best day was getting rid of. Which took forever couldn't sell running so parted out all aftermarket sold shell separate
These cars were grenades. Even with meticulous cars they fell apart. It's a shame, it was an awesome car.
@@BitcoinTo150Kdid you have diff issues? A coworker had one of these and he went through rear diffs faster than tires.
Great video!
im looking at one soon, what advice do you have? what faults etc
I had a 2005 Mazda 6 4cyl and it was the best used car I ever owned.
The 93-97 Mazda MX-6 had head light levelers for the Euro market (fun fact, those projector headlights had Glass lenses)
This is an underrated legend. Few years ago a guy crashed it on the local twisty road and killed himself. It was sad to see it totaled.
I miss my 2006 speed6. It was amazing. Felt like a proper sports car. I had to switch it because of traffic jam and manual trans and the 93octane required.
I loved that model generation Mazda6!
My brother put an intake exhaust HPFP & got an etune it’s 0-60 is 4.5seconds 🤯
the best Mazda ever made come on breh...
The steering rack being slow as shit alone is a reason not to get one
This is one of the coolest sleeper cars.
Have one in the garage at the moment , I have put in a stage 4 set up , fully built beast just putting ethanol injection
When you say Granading itself... this same issue is the same in the 2007 Mazda CX7 and it literally blew up when I got off the freeway. it threw a rod through the bottom of the block and died. and Blew 2 turbos all under 60k miles
My brother had one of these, was a pretty sweet car! Pretty quick too
More stock example than mine and awesome to see the review! It's a fantastic car and if you find one pick it up, there's definitely quirks but you can work around em ❤️ those gen1 speed3 wheels were confusing me for a second lol!
The torque is amazing on these cars!
I’ve always wanted to see a Mazdaspeed 6 in person.
Its the Modern Day Galant VR4 Setup, A Mazda that's Runs Door to Door with 07 Acura TL Type S
Just want to know: is this 2.3 engine similar to the one that later went in the CX-7 and the Ecoboost Mustang?
Yes, it’s the same 2.3 that’s in the Mazdaspeed3 and CX-7, and I believe an updated version is the basis for the engine in the Mustang Ecoboost, Focus RS, and Ranger
The CX-7 and Mazdaspeed3 used this exact engine, though it was detuned to an extent for the CX. The Mustang's EcoBoost is still derived from the same family as this one, but it has been through a lot of changes.
@@ImmortanDan The CX-7 does have a slightly smaller turbo and some other really minor differences like the oil pump.
@@JakeyyFD huh, good to know. I guess it would make sense to actually fit some less performance-oriented parts when converting the engine to crossover spec
We need someone with a VW CC they made a AWD V6 version that was pretty decent. When I worked at VW I had the opportunity to do a dealer trade to pick one up, too much fun
Ha, had a Mazdaspeed 6 for almost a decade and sold it for the v6 AWD CC. Both are fantastic cars!
@@jeffreyschmitz6403 I drove one for a dealer trade when I worked for VW. I was surprised how quick it was. Had to launch it a couple time before dropping it off lol
What's weird is this msp6 just has the cubby instead of the Navi screen like mine has
Very classy
Great review!
Yasss, I've got one in the same color on gen 1 wheels as well
Awesome car, got if for camping cause of the fix points, I put a tent and bike rack on top of mine. I treat mine like trash, Ive ran it dry on oil from smashing the oil filter, ive overheated it, and put some shitty tunes on it and it runs rad with 310k on the odo.
Please do a review on the Mazdaspeed protege
Mps rules!!!
Yay the speed 6!
You definitely sound kinda like Jack Black! Would love to hear an impression!
i still have mine and i love it 0 problems :D
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 my family and I had 3 of these! I was waiting for a good review and this car is nice!
Most notable is that after 16 years most haven't blown a head gasket unlike the Ecoboost motors on the Mustang and Focus RS.
glad you found a clean one to review 😂 mines a little too clapped haha
Sleek body styling. Great looking car.
Fuck the new integra buy one of these...

What about rust and reliability?
Crazy how those are the same wheels on my 2.5T Mazda 6
I’ve owned 2 Speed 3’s before and have always been curious about the Speed 6 and if I should buy one. Anyone been in my shoes with owning a speed 3 and 6? Tell me why which one is better than the other
man i wish i never sold mine, need to buy another one, just that good
Was this highway 9 in norcal?
Hey no disrespect.. but your wrong about the stock Wheels on the speed6 you said that they are just speed3 Wheels.. if you really look the speed3 Wheels are different and I like the speed6 wheels allot better
Those are not the original wheels from my knowledge? I think those are the oem wheels that came on the speed3's cause I have an 06 speed6 and my wheels dont look like those ones
would this be a good first car? cause the mpg doesn’t look all that great
Where is the aux port on this car?
reminds me a lot of my GT RX8, id be curious how they compare.
the ms6 has the LSD rear diff from whichever rx8 model had one
Yayyy my dream car
Wait, they didn't all come all wiheel drive, did they?
Man I love driving mine want to get it to 500hp soon, but still needs some small tlc to get it perfect and wheels lmfao
Oh the power steering lines tend to leak. I think that’s about it. The BOSE system is great though. Those fake exhaust tips are annoying though.
yikes tell us how you really feel! lol but no really, i had to get rid of mine as the rear diff mounts kept failing even after not launching the car and having good aftermarket mounts from JBR. eventually the diff casing cracked and i had to let it go. just too frustrating of a car.
The tq steer in the 3 is. Blown way out of proportion
I bought this car brand new off the lot in 2006 it has been quite literally the most unreliable car I have ever owned and I’ve kept it bone stock and I always have done regular maintenance, But man it’s also the funniest car I ever drove ! Blast in the snow too, It’s a damn shame how unreliable it was😢
Sweet!
I love this mazda
No no no, now the prices will go up...
In late 2000s the regular Mazda 6 was nothing special; Camry was a big upgrade.
The 3 from that period is made out of crappy metal, all rusty in winter places with salted roads, so these may be too.
That part that opens on the dash breaks on fords too.
been on a hunt for one of these :(
Until rust starts to kick in
Omg this is rough. I’m sure he means well but this has to be the most clueless, inane, uneducated review of a speed6 on RUclips.
The “restricted tune” from 06 to 07 didn’t help their blown motor issue (like 4 hp would make a difference lol, everyone knows these motors pop all the time, speed3 first and second gen and all the 6s, they’re all the same)
And no, no one had hpfp issues on stock motors at any rpm or gear and no you weren’t buying an upgraded hpfp at Autozone lol.
(Pro tip, it’s the drivetrain)
I wish him well but good god this review was brutal.
Is it fun to drive
