In “Promising Young Woman,” Carey Mulligan plays Cassie, who is out for revenge for her childhood best friend Nina. The film is an in-depth look at the ripple effect of grief and destructive power of societal apathy. Everything in Fennell's work is done with intent, from the candy-colored nails, to the gyrating khakis to the foreshadowing wings that frame Cassie's bed. But the true pièce de résistance of this stunning work is the gut-punch conclusion.

The second Cassie walked into that cabin I felt nauseous. Once they were all drugged I felt calmer, like there was a possibility it could turn our her way, but I thought the ending was perfect. I also thought that it was even an effective commentary on how dangerous it can be for women, that even with one hand literally handcuffed to the bed, and her totally free, that is still how it ended.
During the little montage, I figured out that the booze was spiked, so all the dudes would be knocked the fuck out.
She went upstairs and pulled those handcuffs out and I got very nervous. I kept thinking, "Just how strong are those? I'm pretty sure THOSE handcuffs aren't as strong as actual handcuffs".
Alas, my fears were confirmed.

Same, at first I felt mixed in watching the movie mostly because of the ending but after hearing their thoughts and other I began to respect the movie a lot more

I didn’t want her to die. That scene was so difficult to watch. Even after she stopped moving, I was hoping she was still alive, somehow.
Very powerful movie.
Plus as a movie, that is always an option.
I felt the same way at the end of Looking for Mr. Goodbar but considering the story in both films, it was inevitable.
I think the fact that she was smothered to death was the perfect ending as it’s so symbolic of what everyone is doing to her the entire movie; silencing her. Any time she attempts to speak about Nina and her assault they all become dismissive and act as if they don’t remember it, she’s overdramatising it, it was Nina’s fault etc. Essentially none of them want to face the ugly truth that they have contributed to something so awful. So when she finally brings Al to his reckoning, quite literally forcing him to remember Nina’s name by scribing it in his skin, he once and for all silences her; as so many women in similar situations have been. This movie does to us, the audience, what Cassie does to everyone she encounters through the course of the film, holds a mirror up to us and makes us watch how we as a society treat victims of sexual assault. Such an incredible film.

That’s true but not how at the start of the interview she says ‘all difference ages, genders and.. all sorts of other things’. She doesn’t mention race because she is complicit in a racist system that prefers whites people.

This movie was so well done. Took me on an emotional roller coaster ride, exactly as it should have. The ending was BRILLIANT! I'm so glad they didn't end it with the fire, we NEED that last scene to get some relief after the horrific stuff that happened at the cabin. And that cameo from Max Greenfield was so good in the most disgusting way- that line "you killed the stripper at your bachelor party? What is it the 90s?" GUTTED ME! And then the way he talked Al Monroe down afterwards too... It perfectly portrays how misogyny can be so ingrained in men that they will thoroughly and truly believe they're "good" and still murder a woman and act like it wasn't their fault. The scene were she watches the video for the first time and hears Bo Burnham's voice....absolutely GUT-WRENCHING! Took me out at the knees.
As a vet and private security officer it was so frustrating to see it happen - I immediately found myself thinking of the many ways she could have easily gotten out of that. Then I had to remind myself she was a very thin and untrained person against someone much stronger so... reality’s bleak and tragic as fuck. I respect the ending.
Yeah, that's why so many women train in self defence. You pay years of practice and hundreds of dollars spent just to be able to protect your own life when men have that privilege handed to them.
@@sunshineslowking5025 And still even this won't always save you. I took self defence training for a few years and had to run, when a group of men was following me.
Many many years of practice, especially with a pandemic thrown in making it impossible to practice for a year or two (I hate not actively training). I've only had a few months of bjj and a year of krav maga and it takes a long time to master, bjj especially. I would recommend bjj to women as you use your opponents weight against them and can learn some moves straight away that can help. But overall, it's a huge chunk of time that you have to dedicate to it just to feel safe - something most men just have given to them.
I do think if she had a bjj training she could have found a way out of that. It was so depressing. But I'm glad they chose this ending as this is represents the horrible reality we're living in.
@@AH-wm9nx I had training in jiu jitsu for some years, facing twice a group of 5-8 men harassing me, the only thing I could do was to run. She might have fought with Al, but all the others too? Training for sure is better than nothing, but it still might not save you in all cases. Although I'm very short I felt quite safe until the first incident, afterwards something really broke inside of me, that no matter what you do, if the situation puts you in disadvantage, you might still not be able to save yourself.
It's so nice listening to Emerald talk about her thought process and reasoning behind the story. A lot of thought was put into this movie which is why it was so effective.
This is not a revenge story, but a tragedy, IMO. Cassie is a protagonist consumed by so much revenge, regret and grief that who she once was died alongside Nina.
I agree, she was willing to go down with her revenge with her own life in the end
yeah but she also lost herself in the process even Nina's mom said....let this ghost go...thus the tradegy
I think she sacrificed herself for justice. That is a noble cause. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
I think it is a revenge story, but a realistic one, this literally consume all of her life and she was willing and knew that she could die while doing it
Yeah. It was very neat how it was gradually it was revealed that the movie really is about a woman's grief and giving up her life due to grief. Her friend whom she idolized and one of the few people who were kind/understood her died in such an awful way. It speaks so much to the human experience in how we handle loss and what happens to us when we lose something we love too much.
The dead method makes it less of an accident and the fact that they made it that long, makes it clearly it was not an accident. It's a long time and it has to make you think. He also wanted her to stop moving because he said it. So in that moment, he was trying to kill her. In terms of story, it was really good.
Well I mean, yeah... Imagine being in that scenario. You're still handcuffed so you can't escape, if you let her go, she may kill you. Honestly, had they not burned the body they probably would have gotten away with it as they should. That was self defense. Police would have found that the drinks were drugged, and drugs int he guys systems, from Ryan, learn that this was premeditated etc.

@@atomiplex8956 nah it got to a point where she was clearly close to passing out or at least weakened enough that he could have stopped but he kept going and kept going and that made it a conscious decision. that's why i think it was so powerful to show it for so long, as horrifying as it was to watch, bc it really showed how much time he had to switch tactics and spare her life if he wanted. also, she had lost hold of the scalpel and he was sitting on top of her as a much larger person, so he definitely could have kept her restrained long enough to free himself from the cuffs
I want to add to the conversation also that those fuzzy pink handcuffs are super easy to get out of. There’s a little lever on them which makes it easy to escape. (Kudos the Folding Ideas for demonstrating this)
For me, that moment works both diegetically and metaphorically. The fact that he could get out of those handcuffs but didn’t, what he says to her, and how upset he is by it reminds me of a rape itself. He kills her not necessarily because he had preexisting malice but because he found an excuse to exercise his power over her, and instead of taking the high road and fleeing, he stayed there, fake handcuffed to the idea of masculinity as domination until she collapsed under the weight of it.
I truly admired how bold this film's ending was-and the unflinching scene of the murder highlights how cavalier violence against women is in most films. That scene is brutal and forces you to see the brutality of it. Glad the film didn't end with the burning; I guess that's why sometimes writers' need feedback! I love that Part V comes onscreen when you think all the parts are done and the revenge plan has been completely foiled. The ending we scene on film is in perfect keeping with the tone and Cassie's character. And what a great twist after we've already had more than one twist! A film that keeps you on your toes. This movie is so unique. I've never quite seen a movie like this before!
And Carey Mulligan (deservedly) will garner a second Oscar Nomination, possibly even win for this incredibly layered and understated performance
Oh man, I loved this film so much. Watched it last night. Emerald is a genius and Carey delivers her best performance yet, and she has many brilliant ones.
One of the reasons I adore this movie despite it being hard to watch, is because Emerald never took the direction of it being a shock value film. This could have easily made people walked out the door, or turn off the film due to its nature of content. However, she was able to stay in the direction of the narrative she wanted to focus on, and in the end made everyone fell in love with this film. I can tell you, there were two scenes I lost it at, but applaud Emerald's choice in shooting those scenes.

This film was fuqing brilliant. There was no wasted scene. I honestly wanted to see more of Molly Shannon/Nina's side storyline. But yeah it was superb
Even that was a brilliant strategy because the biggest tragedy is that Nina, who chose nothing, is all but anonymous here....Isn’t that just like life?

I don't think it's unrealistic that Cassie would have contingencies in place in case she "disappeared".
she stalks everyone and manages to put them in them in the worst situations, she always has a plan throughout the movie, of course she would have contingencies in the case of her death
Until then she's handled one man, and her head was in the game. I think there are several reasons why everything happened. She fell in love with Ryan, she actually quit her revenge plan when things are fine between them. But then she lost him in the worst way possible. Also she's already dead, her father says that 'they missed her'. I think it was a forecast. And there is no reason she wouldn't make plans in case things go South. Like she knows that she's going in a den of hyenas.
Grief does strange things to people.
I actually had to replay the ending scene to understand how she got the cops to pin her death on that main guy because I only had watched it on a plane and didn't quite pick up what she sent to that ex lawyer (Alfred Molina).
@@mrinalini9112 and the fact that at the beginning she says that she doesn’t want a husband, kids, a job her parents can brag about. It almost seems like she knew those were no longer an option for her. She doesn’t reply to the question of what she wants but I think it’s solely justice for Nina. I think the necklaces really symbolise that too.
My daughter and I loved this movie. Remarkable. As a psychoanalyst, let me suggest that fantasies of revenge are harmless, helpful when shared in words. Acts of revenge are dangerous. We get information about motivation from observing the difference between those who fantasize (e.g., watch movies) and those who act. Emerald, five stars

Just watched this movie today it left me with a feeling like there an arrow in my chest.
I love Emeralds explanation of why she selected that ending cos its so true. A woman taking on a 6ft fully formed man is practical suicide, as that would happen 99% of the time. All through the earlier entrapment scenes all I kept thinking 'Girl, if he turns on you now,you are completely screwed!'
I watched this film yesterday and I'm still thinking about it now. A lot of films lot of modern films don't hit me emotionally, this did.
I was differently conditioned for a "revenge" on there perpetrators, but watching Cassie put a mirror to to sexual assault perpetrators and people that protect them was shocking and eyeopening.
I think the films really disarms you with Cassie's wit , personality and humor.
Didn’t expect to cry like I did but that was a powerful ending. Carey Mulligan is a fantastic actress!

I think it is the first movie i've watched starring Carey Mulligan , and i really think NOBODY could have played this character better.. really , she was a revelation for me , and i really hope she will get some reconnaissance for her work cos she's amazing. 2021 starts really well with this one, I care a lot with the wonderful Rosamund Pike ... this movie is really well written and well made.

This reminds me of lovely bones. I absolutely hated there was no resolution for the protagonist. And yet they highlight the point, the world is unfair.

I would have dismissed this move if things went neatly for our protagonist rather than ...SPOILER...her death. This movie was excellent. Such a mind fuck. I was expecting killing, no killing. But MAJOR mind fucks. Riveting...made me feel things I didn't like BUT I addressed what I was feeling and came to a better place about it. Cause I'm THAT chick that likes to be vindicated..with happy endings. But in the way there was a happy ending...not the one I wanted. Can I just say kudos to the mind fuck she was putting on guys night after night??

That's so weird because when her body was burning at the end I thought to myself "if the movie ends right now it is such a powerful message". It was such a potent metaphor for how the truth of women's rights is that men will always have more physical power. So much of what is shown as women empowerment in films is unrealistic and unattainable, when girls in movies are so badass and tricky and cunning. Real women are not necessarily like that and their rights have to come in a different manner, and that has to be understood and contemplated. That burning body ending would've been so removed from the normal movie formula... but then the movie went on, and picked up some of those normal formula/tropes where the girl was on top of it all along, which harmed the realism and potency a bit. Of course it was still great, but it is definitely weird that I could sense the real heart of the story ended there in the moment when she was burning and it showed her colored nails, that was the real message. No matter how tough we try to be, how much anger is in our hearts, we are always at their mercy in some way. It was such a strong message of fragility and the injustice that often times comes with it.
It was still an amazing movie of course! I see the benefits of the good parts of the wedding ending they mentioned too... But I do wish that producers would not interfere with an artist's vision/message the way they do to try to make things more appealing. It cheapens things. I'm sure that Emerald will gain more creative control in future projects from her success with this film though, and she deserves it! 💜
I don't think it took away from it at all... Cassie knew it could go wrong, she's really smart to have a plan in place just in case... I don't think she wanted to die or had a death wish, but she knew it could go sideways... I mean she dies... she doesn't really win bc it took her and Nina s life. Honestly there are no winners just some modicum of justice at the expense of a woman's life.
The metaphors and symbolism are so brilliant
I loved this scene, it was a shocker, not formulaic. While incredibly sad, it made sense this would happen. I love your movie! I watched it again with my husband and he loved it too. Emerald, we can't wait for more stuff from you.
The movie has left me feeling unsettled and understood, all at once.
I only recently got to watch the movie. It certainly resonates with you. Builds the character and story up all the way to the end; and I got choked up as Angel in the Morning starts playing and you see Cassie's ultimate revenge playing out in front of you.
I've been so well trained by other movies to expect the knight in shining armor to show up that for a second I thought Ryan was going to realize she was in trouble and walk up the stairs to save her. Instead, we get the sick, twisted version where the friend comes up to assuage Al's guilt and fears and Cassie is still dead. So, so good.
The fact that Emerald Fennell was 7 months pregnant whilst filming this blows my mind this film deserves all the Oscars

I loved this movie. so many angles. the visuals, the. characters, the intelligence. The ending was tops¡¡¡ brilliant. thank you. and yes i cried at the alst minutes. amazing it should be showed mandatory in high schools :)
The ending was a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Her motive becomes increasingly clear after each Act, however, when she took Al upstairs in the cabin, you felt like she was finally going to get the vengeance she yearned for because the rest of the Acts played out exactly as she anticipated. The people she targeted were all able to process how wrong their actions were. She held them accountable to the parts they played in her friends death.
Once Al partially broke free from the handcuffs, it was quickly realized that this was not going to be the case again, because it is so often seen that perpetrators of sexual assault walk away practically unscathed. You then see the realism in her death scene, which feels heavy, deflating and fatalistic. Of course it's going to end like this. This feels REAL. BUT she knew going in that it was fatalistic and perhaps even futile. She premeditated the potential futility and once again turned the tables. Finally getting justice, even if it meant in a self sacrificial way.

I feel like they should have left the “bruise scene” in as this was something that felt fake to me in the movie. Like, every guy she confronted was scared?? I’m sure some would have been angry and possibly attacked her anyway. Maybe it wouldn’t have been plausible that she would continue to do that if she had been brutally attacked in that way??
I don't think it feels that fake, because the type of men she goes for are not tipicaly dangerous. They think of themselves as "good men", they wouldn't attack a conscious woman who could fully remember and blame them for their crime

@@CC-mr5xq I could be wrong, but I don't think she did hurt any of the men, what I pieced together is that she shames and scares them, and warns them that there are plenty of other women out there doing what she does, and those women will take it far further than she's going to. It's the more realistic idea to me, she's a petite woman, even against dweeby guys she's still not going to be much of a threat, so she relies on manipulation and fear because those are two weapons she can actually use effectively. And ultimately she's still a good person, she isn't a killer or a psychopath. Even with Al, it seems like she was going to scar him, not outright murder him. The film just wants you to think that she is a killer at the start because that's the trope we're used to seeing.
The ending gave you some gratification that sadly although it didn’t go her way there was still some consequences to those guilty. Definitely the movie watcher that you are hopes it ends well and even when she’s on the bed you hope she wakes up but you kind of needed that ending to make you think about it and not get over it as soon as the film is over.

God I'm happy it didn't end with the fire. Like, Cassie is too smart for that, just like Emerald is saying here... but also, we need a bit of hope to spring into action. If everything is useless anyway, why even put up a fight?
This movie is brilliant I thought the ending was fitting. It was a grander representation of what almost all women are told: “scream FIRE when you are in fear of being SAed”. Cassie ends in fire, the fire that will get the justice she sought for her best friend.

After the scene with Mclovin lol she marked it down blue. So I believe the blue represented guys that actually didn't go all the way with attempting to have sex with her as she was "Drunk" . and the RED stood for the ones that went all the way scumbag.

True one thing I was also wondering how she takes the risk of always going to some unknown drunk guy's place and never get hurt . They would turn violent and she would not be able to overpower them .
because Al is somewhat of a representation of the exception. The other guys genuinely think they’re ‘nice guys’ because their taking advantage of women is unseen to them. Sexism and misogyny are so ingrained in culture that they are raised on it and do not see women as people and it’s conditioned that women “owe them” but won’t just “give in” so it’s up to them to just take advantage. As long as no one acknowledges what it is, they can suppress the reality into their subconscious and continue to feel entitled. So they wouldn’t react violently when their actions are eventually called out, because they are consciously aware that violence is wrong and “too far”. They can stop and reflect on their actions because as instinctual opportunists, they were living in denial.
Al was the one who r*ped Nina, while the others stood by and enabled his behavior. Al is more consciously aware of his mentality and penchant for predatory sexual behavior, so it is executed more intentionally or premeditated. Al’s toxic masculinity and misogyny are not simply shrouded in cultural bias and conditioning, they are rooted in his ultimate lust for control and dominance. Al does not and won’t reflect on his actions when they’re called out, because he is already well aware of them. Instead, he chooses to cover them up to maintain a facade. This is why he chooses to murder Cassie instead of simply escape. Protecting his image and not being exposed for his conscious behavior is his priority above all else and so by any means necessary.
I could get into Joe, who is somewhat of an in between (feeding off Al’s position) and Ryan who is lower on the spectrum of this phenomenon (but a complicit contributor to the problem), but I think you get it and that mostly answers the question.
I actually pretty much experienced this movie as Emerald intended - because I got interrupted with 10 minutes of the movie to go, pretty much right after her death. I was numb and pretty out of my mind for the next few hours and had to process it my own way before I was able to finally watch the rest of the movie and get the catharsis that part 5 offered.
this ending is the truth and validated my decision to not get legal, the depths people will go to cover their reputation is real.
I was talking to the screen saying, “Dude, stop! No more scalpel!” That ending definitely stuck with me.

I rewound this scene to see what she threw. She took off the car's license plate and threw it into the woods to leave evidence for the police that she was there in case something happened to her. Because of course they got rid of the car.
I liked the ending , it made sense and let be honest, if it ended any other way we would not still be talking about the movie

Definitely horrific to watch. I jumped up off the couch and paced around for that whole scene.
Best movie ever. I’m 74 yrs old...have seen many good movies. Some have made me sad...and tears came to my eyes. I prefer justice movies...where the bad guys/gals get what’s coming to them. I want the good gal/guy to avenge the unrighteousness. The type of movies I like. I’m an empath. But when it comes to my family , little children....or animals being harmed, I will become fierce. I’m kind of a justice seeker, like Cassie..in that sense. The ending of that movie was totally unexpected, gave me chills, I had tears in my eyes....and...in the end, justice won. Cassie accomplished fulfilling her revenge...but it broke my heart...the whole storyline..and it happens all the time, in real life. I didn’t want Cassie to die....but when the movie ended, I sat with tears rolling down my face....I had the chills from the music and the text messages.....and I felt sooooo proud of Cassie. She finished what she started....and better justice comes late, then never. Yes...so many emotions I felt. Great movie! 💖💖💖👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Comedian Bill Maher revealed the ending, & online reviewers were sour on it (I almost didn't see it b/c of all this), but I thought it made it Powerful. I was unaware a Brit wrote/directed & starred in it. Yes, it makes a difference, b/c Brits see violence as abhorrent, U.S.'ers don't (think about this). I've rewatched the ending a good 10x, & it realizes Cassie's revenge, what with the bright sunlit day, & "Angel of the Morning," all of which suggests something dark is about to be sunlit so all can see it. It's PERFECT! I hope the director reveals what the black/red marks in Cassie's little book meant, & what she threw in the woods by her car b4 she walked to the cabin...! Please!! 53-y/o guy here. Great movie! Thank you!
She took off the license plate of her car and threw it into the woods next to it. Why? Because she wanted to leave evidence for the police that she was there in case something happened to her.

Cassie's murder was shocking and I couldn't belive that she died, but I realized that her life was already ruined after she watched the video. She had almost let it go, but soon realized that person she liked was guilty like Al and Madison and all the others. And he was not only just guilty, but he didn't regret it at all. "I don't know if I can live with the threat of this hanging over me", his career is more important to him than a life of an innocent woman he partly took responsibility in killing. That's just devastating, when you belived that the world is full of assholes and when you thought you have found an exception he has turned out to be as much terrible, if not more. You think you have found hope and soon it is taken from you. It wouldn't be a much happier ending for Cassie even if she survived, from that point she was already dead inside, and vengeance was the only thing that could make her feel better for a brief moment, but probably she would be very depressed in the end anyway.
You might think I'm crazy but I would love to see a sequel. So how can you have a sequel when the protagonist died? Well I think there's enough interest to do a mixture of the trial or court proceedings associated with the murder and videotape and then a whole (prequil) backstory from Cassie and Nina's life. The backstory could even go to when they were young kids through to the actual event at college and beyond.I think there is enough interest in this movie that people would want to know more to answer their questions and the entire backstory not completely developed in the first movie.
If she had used real handcuffs instead those cheap, furry novelty ones Al wouldn't have gotten loose.
He would've been able to break the steel of the head rest though, I think.
anybody else catch the irony of Al being anesthesiologist? essentially chose an occupation where he drugs people to sleep. also his wife name is anastasia

She was doomed. She had to give up her dream job to take care of her friend and then watch her friend give up.

It would have been so full on if the film had ended at the fire. I think I would have rathered that ending also. More realistic.

I was wondering about something else! How did Madison have a copy of the rape video on her phone? Why, would anyone keep something like that in the first place?! And why, wasn't Ryan at Al's bachelor party?! If, he would've been there. He might've gone upstairs, heard the struggle and came to Cassie's rescue! It's a nice thought, isn't it!

It is super hard to watch because it took so long.
She is so dead on with that ending being the most true outcome. Because as much as we want to believe in the girl with the dragon tattoo that is not reality. Unless the guy is literally too weak to have raped someone there is no way he wouldn't be able to murder Cassie with literally one of his hands tied behind his back. That's what it is. And the perfect thing about it is it puts all of the rest of us men who haven't raped someone on the spot and say would you tell the cops if you're Bo Burnham. And I think a lot of us don't like what answer our mind gives us there... Absolutely loved it. Beautifully confronting in ways most movies don't dare to be.

I wasn't happy with the ending! I heard, that Cassie didn't make it. At first, I was weary about watching it. But then, I thought...WTH! I was also thinking, didn't Cassie know how to fight?! I was watching the scapple in her hand. When, Al was trying to hold the pillow over her face. I think, he knocked it out of her hand?! If, he didn't. She probably would've stabbed him with it! My heart was racing, the whole time. The first time, I saw it! It was hard to watch! I really don't think, Al and Joe needed to burn Cassie's body in the mountains. Couldn't they have just buried her, instead! The police found the remains, anyways! There's no such thing as the perfect crime! I cried, the first time! But overall, it was a good movie! I was rooting for Carey to win for Best Actress at the Oscars! She's a great actress! I'm sure, she will win someday! Can't wait to see, what she does next!
