The neck/headstock transition is very tricky! My first ukulele had a very pretty transition, but when I held it in a playing position I realized I had left it too thick and I needed to extend the side taper toward the headstock. So I carved away (watching lovely finish disappear) until the feel was right. There was considerable rework to the finish but the result made me very happy as a player. Turns out a shape that was good for playing was also attractive to the eye. Now I always hold the ukulele in the playing position, checking the neck / headstock transition, then apply the finish…
