Lyrics:
This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be my childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need
Of a friend
Why did it have to end
And why do they always say
Don't look back
Keep your head held high
Don't ask them why
Because life is short
And before you know
You're feeling old
And your heart is breaking
Don't hold on to the past
Well that's too much to ask
[Long and movie versions only:]
Live and learn
Well the years they flew
And we never knew
We were foolish then
We would never tire
And that little fire
Is still alive in me
It will never go away
Can't say goodbye to yesterday (can't say goodbye)
No regrets
But I wish that you
Were here with me
Well then there's hope yet
I can see your face
In our secret place
You're not just a memory
Say goodbye to yesterday (the dream)
Those are words I'll never say (I'll never say)
This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be our pride and joy
This used to be the place we ran to
That no one in the world could dare destroy
[Short and movie versions only ending:]
This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
I wish you were standing here with me
[Movie version only ending:]
This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our great escape
This used to be the place we ran to
This used to be our secret hiding place
This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
The best things in life are always free
Wishing you were here with me

I can’t tell you what this song means to me. Came out at a time when I was still young with so much promise. Now I’m 42, lost. Alone. But I play this and it takes me back to those times when I was young. Keeps me hanging on. Weird how a song can do that.
You are still young... we just have keep going, all the best!
I'm also 42, this was my graduation song from primary school. It brings me back and it's bittersweet but wouldn't trade it for another. I am Jamaican, single mother, lost my job, rent piling up just here taking a load off. If you don't mind could, we be friends?

Madonna's song "This Used to Be My Playground" reflects nostalgia and longing for a past that can never be experienced again. It is a very deep feeling that is sung about and everyone knows it.
She did amazing at this but critics back then only were used to her dance pop songs and called this boring.
in portugal we have a term for it, we call it "saudade"
I didn’t know she wrote AND sang her own songs. A lotta talent! Peace
I think of my grandmother when I hear this song. She would always take me to my elementary school playground. I cry every time I hear this song.
Madonna has old soul I feel she has her heart in she sings this song ❤❤
One of most Madonna's underrated number one songs. Brilliant lyrics. She can sing a ballad like no other.

I remember, 36 years old.
This song takes me right back to the end of summer '92. A new girl moved into my apartment building, and invited me to a church youth group, and I couldn't come up with an excuse not to go. That night changed my life - for the first time people just accepted me, didn't make fun of me. Friends - the best things in life are always free!
Flash forward 30+ years, and now I'm the church youth leader bringing together kids from many different backgrounds showing them that God loves them no matter who or what they've done. I think back fondly of Amanda and am so thankful for her and the time we had. I wish at times I could go back to our "playground" but know that time has moved on...
Wishing you were here with me.
Me and my big sister grew up in the 80s. She was born in 81. Me in 85. We loved Madonna. When I hear her I see my sisters face. Sadly my sis died from a painful suicide in 2019. Wishing you were here with me sis. 😢this used to be our playground.
Oh Bella, I am so sorry for your loss. May your sister's memory be a blessing and may you find comfort in those memories. ❤
Bella!....im sorry for your loss...my sister took her life in 2010.....my thoughts are with you hun x
So sorry for your sister may she rest in pease
I am truly sorry for your loss. My beloved younger sister was killed by a drunk driver when she was only 17 and whenever I hear this, her beautiful face appears before me. Stay strong.
Oh dear... That God might heal your soul for this so sadly lost.
I'm a 56 year old married man with a beautiful family. I've become successful in my field of work. I like racing, I like shooting my guns, and my favorite band is Rush. However, no matter what time of day...what day of the week...wherever I am...this song brings me to my knees! I have to struggle to compose myself when I play it at work. The song is so painful yet I cannot stop playing it. I cry like a baby when this song plays over the end credits of "A League of Their Own." Madonna has pried her way into my soul with this masterpiece. It makes me want to visit the baseball fields I played in as a youngster and drive through the parking lot of my elementary school. And, I'm melancholy, once again.
Jesus Christ, dude. It's just a song.
Its because its an amazing song!!! Kinda cuts right to the soul. MANY people feel the exact same way about it!!!

Her best song, not even nominated for best song in motion picture oscar
Fun fact. When asked to come up with a ballad for the film, Madonna was recording her fifth studio album, Erotica, with producer Shep Pettibone. The due worked on some ideas and came up with "This Used to Be My Playground" in two days.
In loving memory of Penny Marshall, who directed that great movie "A League Of Their Own," from which this song was taken. Penny Marshall, R.I.P.

I love this song so much, but it hurts every time i listen to it . All those childhood memories come flooding back , wishing to do it again . Remembering family members that have passed on . Your friends, and all those great times
The only constant in life is sadness.
@@LoneLee2022 He's right you know!
I grew up with a gang of friends on our street. We all played together-girls and boys. When we went to junior high we stopped playing together and were making new friends. But a year later I got us playing again. We all knew that this was it, that we were savoring the beauties of our childhood world, that was already almost gone.
This reminds me of my lovely friend Cathy, we lost touch, oh how i could go back to those times, i miss her over 40 years

This song came out while I was still in high school. Now that I'm halfway thru my life, the lyrical content holds so much truth and meaning for me. It's hard to listen to it without getting emotional. I think we all wish we could go back to simpler, more innocent times.

One of the most beautiful underappreciated ballads.
This is really one of Madonna's most forgotten songs and this is even one of her #1's songs on the Hot 100 but this song really never talked about.
So true and to be honest, I kinda like it that way
I've been on Michael Jackson and Madonna binge lately. I totally agree about this movie and song! This movie was huge in the 90s and I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of Sandlot and The Preachers Wife with the soundtracks.
I agree. It says a lot on how chart positions are overrated and they mean literally nothing. Some of Madonna's most iconic hits are "Frozen, The Power of Good-Bye, Secret, Rain, Don't Tell Me, Beautiful Stranger, La Isla Bonita, Hung Up, 4 Minutes", one would think that they are all #1s, instead they all missed the top position.
This song deserves more attention.
Songs like this are why I love her music so much. You are my people. She is the untouchable "it" girl. No Miley, Gaga, or whoever can touch the authenticity and bravado that is Madonna. Some come close (Pink!), but Madonna is one of a kind. She created her own lane. She did it despite who was biting what she tossed out there. Who stood up for her when the world despised her (or the music)? She did. Madonna has balls no man can touch (even Sean Penn). I wish I'd had an ounce of the courage she had to be who she came to be.
@@xxxTIN0xxx I feel you. Loved those, too. Her catalog is impeccable. Those heartfelt, gutwrenching songs still get me.

So true
How Madonna has not won an Oscar for soundtrack songs she’s written is outrageous. I get that she was controversial and the institution didn’t wanna seem to legitimize her but her talent is colossal. She’s one of the greatest songwriters, producers, and live performers in popular music. On a side note, she won both Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber the only Oscars of their careers.
I know, right? _A League of Their Own_ was a box-office smash, and "This Used to Be My Playground" topped the music charts. Normally, hit songs from hit movies are Oscar-nominated.

The orchestra takes this song to another level. Haunting lyrics and a heartfelt performance from a woman who rarely allowed herself to be vulnerable. She has not sung this live.
Yes i get what you are saying...even at her age, with loving kids..she is still " afraid" of showing the true self only when we show all our real colours ( all shades) are we " truly authentic"
Hard to believe she is the same artist these days. All dark, almost devil-ish imagery and so forth when she performs on award shows or whatever. Too bad. She wrote some great stuff on the Take A Bow record too. La Isla Bonita is another example of greatness.

This came out a year before I had surgery for an unexpected brain hemorrhage, causing me to go from a straight A student in 6th grade to a stroke causing seven serious physical and mental disabilities. The song really rings true and taught me a lot in the years to come.
Much had been said about Madonna,But this is one of the most BEAUTIFUL songs EVER!
I could not agree more #2020
A beautiful song from a beautiful film I thought one of Madonna's best 👍❤️
30 years have passed but the legend that is Madonna lives on!
"The best things in life are always free...wishing you were here with me!" Like Madonna singing those lyrics to her mother, who passed away, when Madonna was 5 years old. Such a touching song, with profoundly moving lyrics.
Idk why but every time I hear this song I want to cry
Me too
Me too, and it brings back some happy memories of my youth but more sad memories of time misspent and lost. I try not to dwell on the negative vibes it reminds me and count myself lucky, health, my amazing children and affection from my wife occasionally. That I try and stay positive and tackle one day and minute at a time. And cherish the successes achieved in those minutes and days.
🙋♀️😢
I think its the music
not being funny. I mean rather than the words
This song really touches my heart, even more so now that I'm 39. Time flashes by, our parents grow older... Though my motto has always been "keep my inner child alive", I can't deny that life has a way of trying to make you cynical and having you put up walls to protect yourself after experiencing hurt. Regardless, this song is like a time capsule that has captured the beautiful nostalgia of being a carefree child with their life ahead of them.
She FINALLY performed this after 32 years of waiting.......now we need to hear "Rescue Me" & "I'll Remember" Live !
This was the song that made me fall in love with Madonona....she was the most beautiful woman in my 8yr old mind. Her music taught me about expression, acceptance, and truth....she still holds a very special place in my heart :)
@@vitorriccardo445 I still get misty eyed when I hear it.
i definately couldn't agree more. Nicely said.
Same, except I was 10 years old during that beautiful summer of 92.
I saw the movie when it came out and this song was fitting. Man I miss my childhood of the 70s, 80s, & 90s. Growing up through those years were special and will never sadly come again. My dad served in the Navy in 1943 when the women baseball teams were formed and was in the Pacific and Atlantic during WWII. We lost him 4 years ago this month. I remember him telling stories of his time in the service, as a kid and how those were happy times for him, even though we were at war. I miss you dad, we lost you too early, still had time together, Rest in Peace and thanks for everything you taught me over the years, even though I didn't listen than!
Your childhood spanned 3 decades?🤣
Good old days 😊
The best Madonna song for me I think
I lost my parents last year in a nursing home, one surrounded by strangers trying to keep him alive, the other forty nine days later, gasping for air, neither were given last rites by a priest. So I gave my mom last rites as guaranteed by the catholic church with her daughter, her other son, grandchildren, and great grand children, thou was pure of heart, in the township, my family made a name for themselves, Ewing. Mom and Dad had a great costly send off, and one day I will remember them in song, this I promise.
"Why do they always, don't look back"
"Don't hold on the past"
"Say goodbye to yesterday, those are words I will never say"
The hardest part of life for me is letting go to the past
Love her slower ballads! Show's off her beautiful voice more. ❤❤
Me too
Me three
She really is quite talented .
The QUEEN OF POP IS STILL REIGNING ❤❤
Her best song ever;Love her,Thankx
This song gives me chills to the core
I was graduating from high school in 1992 when this song came out. It made me think of preparing for adulthood, saying goodbye to friends as we went in different directions, and faced with tucking away those cherished childhood memories as childhood comes to a close.
Madonna ballads are unparalleled
Seriously no other female singer comes even close!
Madonna: THIS USED TO BE MY PLAYGROUND
This song makes me cry, not because it makes me feel sad but because it touches my heart.
I am a 54 year old man, lived with pure emotion, with the soul of a child and the mind of a wise man. This song is one of my or if not my favorite of all your Madonna songs, she is like my identity.
I lived my childhood, adolescence and maturity in an amusement park: the Playcenter in São Paulo/Brazil. It was the place where I took refuge from the world, from problems, from family, it was my heaven where moments were just joy. Today this park no longer exists, even Michael Jackson himself loved to know it when he was there.
This song brings me my best memories of how happy I was, how free I was, how I was simply ME.
Madonna, her songs and melodies move me a lot, they were always part of my story in all good and bad times.
At the end of my journey, I hope that this song will be played on the day of my departure, as it transports me to the best world, to heaven. May I shine freely in the midst of so much darkness.
One of her most underrated songs. So beautiful and haunting.
yes but that's strange because this song was #1 everywhere when it came out.
@@pabloocristgrc8579 And yet she never performed it live.
Cyndi Lauper finally acknowledged The Goonies song and Madonna finally acknowledged the League of Their Own song. Life is good.❤❤ ❤ ❤
What!?! Cindy Lauper Goonies what;? You guys try to give sense to nonsense!
I was 19 when this came out and saw it with my High School girlfriend...Where does time go...
