Here it is, finally, my initial thoughts and maiden flight of the new MFD Crosswind mapping platform, which could also be adapted for FPV through some mods! Despite the unfortunate situation with the wrong angle on the horizontal stabilizer, which causes some issues if you want to fly the plane fast in manual mode, its overall flight performance and stability is quite impressive, and its complete lack of tip stall tendencies does improve my confidence in it quite a bit! MFD are already working on a replacement tail to address the issue, that should be available soon and will be shipped free of charge to existing owners of the plane, but this will not stop me from flying this bird until then as the autopilot does seem to be handling the situation quite well!

Love how you tell your viewers”don’t hound me on my antenna placements” it’s worked for me in past and I’ll continue using it this way... love it! People drive me nuts with there opinions
Hahahaha, well... this is my opinion... must drive you nuts then! :P
ArxangelRC no you don’t drive me nuts. I’m speaking of how others will ridicule every little detail on a build. I have nothing against how you build and do videos. I actually love your work and you are my favorite youtuber.
ArxangelRC I think you may have misunderstood. I wasn’t trying to be a dick towards you. Love your videos
ArxangelRC I honestly love how you tell folks this is how I do it and get over it! One of main reasons I stopped uploading videos and don’t have a channel myself. I have 0 tolerance with people mostly so social media is not a good place for me.
hahahahahaha, yeah... everybody has an opinion... whether it is based on experience though... is a completely different matter! I rarely speak in theory... and my videos are of actual tests... not theories! So... putting the antennas vertical... does seem to work rather well... and changing their orientation against all logic for long range makes zero sense to me!
Nicola, this looks a superb plane, you have built it up nice
Thanks, I am just getting started! Hoping it will survive until the end of the mods! :)
Great video! I was definitely wanting one of these, but probably should maiden my MTD first. Thanks for the info and I'll wait until the fix comes out...
Thanks mate! :) Good luck with the MTD!
About stall, if you don`t disable it on purpose, Arduplane has a so-called "anti stall feature " by default. It doesn't allow the plane to pitch up more bellow the minimum speed ( value also configurable ). So, if you set it up correctly ( by the way, default is working ok enough ), basically you can`t stall a plane, or a wing. Did it myself with my AR wing, full elevon up, throttle stop, speed dropped to 18-20kmh, but that`s it, never stalled.
I hven't touched this parameter, but I did try to stall the plane in manual mode, without any stabilization, and the result was the same... just didn't want to dip those wings!
Great review. Wrong incidence on the horizontal tail surface is a very big no-no. This confirms what I have always suspected about this industry. These planes are not properly tested before production of the molds. This fact is mind boggling considering how expensive these molds are.
You are correct indeed! But then again they might hve thought that since a little trim can cure it... why bother fixing it! :)
If only a little trim is needed this shouldn`t be a problem.
Actually, it is a problem, because an airframe of this type and design should not need an up trim to fly level! A flying wing would need... Not this design though!
It kinda depends on the amount of trim needed, and this directly relates to cg. You know more about this than me since I haven`t flown or trimmed the plane:-)
Actually this particular design... if balanced properly, should not require any trim to fly level... assuming the airframe is straight, etc. Even if it does require some trimming... it shouldn't be in these amounts, so that is definitely something that needs to get fixed!
That sort of antenna placement would be ideal for a craft that doesn't bank much and spends most of it's time in one orientation. The L shape only has advantages if the craft regularly banks and can be in any orientation at any time
EXACTLY! Especially when I fly long range I don't bank too much even during turns... And never do extreme maneuvers high away. :)
I love your videos! You have an awesome sense of humor.
I came real close to buying this plane but, I think I would be happier with the MTD as I fly LR and prefer to fly with goggles. Also, this plane is huge!
I currently fly FX61s and Z84s for LR but I need something that isn’t so loud. Thanks for the thorough review!
Thanks mate, really appreciate the kind words! The plane really is quite big, not toi loud though! Perhaps something skinnier will be better suited unless you really the extra space the Crosswind provides. :)
Thanks for the review! Mine's been on my desk for weeks now, so keen to be my next FPV platform. I'll print something for the nose to take a camera. Pity about the tail. I really hope it will be backwards compatible!
Yes, the new tail is meant to fit existing planes, which have already been sold, the way it attaches will not change, only the angle on the horizontal stabilizer! :)
Another great build [as usual] ArxanglrRC,. Seems to have very good and stable handling characteristics. Your contributions to the RC Hobby is immense. I see that you seem to be located in Sophia Bulgaria according to your GPS OSD coordinates, if i'm correct.
Greetings from Florida USA.
Thanks mate, appreciate it, and yes, you are correct, I am in Bulgaria! Greetings right back at you! :)
That an impressive build, I wonder what crazy long range are you going to prepare for it, and of course your own Li-Ion packs. Love the Phantom 4 shots also !
Thanks! Will see about the long range... have to get to some decent efficiency levels first! :)
Looks very nice. shame they could not get the tail incidence right. can't really quantify the stall characteristics, or efficiency until that is right, followed by optimal CG placement for the intended use. thanks for the great review!
Yup, will be retesting all of this with the new tail, but I do believe the stall test results will be quite similar... hoping the efficiency will improve though! :)
Love watching your reviews and especially the autopilot and long range stuff, have you considered anything like a ‘beginner’ video or series of videos? I’ve been flying freestyle quads for a few years, had basically nothing but frustration with my first delta wing, I’m really interested in trying out a plane, maybe something like the Ranger 2000, but I’ve got no real idea what a good beginner platform would be, especially for GPS and autopilot without getting into mapping planes or big dollars.
Thanks for all your videos!
Thanks mate! I have been thinking about something of the sort... will have to put something together I guess! The Ranger 2000 may not be the complete beginners plane, but if you already have some experience behind sticks... it just might do! :)
I suggest servo mid parameter of the elevator a bit up, this should take care of the behavior in Manual/Stabilize, in old days this was called "trim" :) might be worth it to move CG aft a bit ;)
Ammmmm... This would actually only cover thr issue a little... not solve it! All will be good when MFD ships the new tails.:)
Awesome video 👍. What size prop do you have.
Thanks! Currently running 10x7E props on this one!
Fantastic information.
Thanks mate! :)
Wow, you mentioned that you talked to Charles? I thought that he have sold the company!! as there where rumors of it on RCgroups..... also I would like to know whom is your quad camera men!! awesome work, I do love to see a good and steady video! Great work, finally May I ask where you live! I love that place that you have to fly, it looks like a really great park where no one will give you a hard time or call the police... Thank you for your hard work.
He sold the MTD plane, not his company! :) In this case a friend of mine flew the copter, as he wanted to test something out! There was some good footage and there was some need for me to zoom in and tame down some of it to be presentable! :) As for the place, I am in Sofia, Bulgaria, and actually this area where this video was shot, is a dedicated RC flying field now, officially! :)
Excellent Review...!
Just looking at the pictures of the Control Surfaces for the Crosswind and they seem to be much less (by scale) then the Twin Dream (as a comparison). Do you have any concerns with this in terms of controlablity of aircraft?
Not really... as long as it has speed it will have control... although the ailerons do get a bit docile when the speeds gets too low... but not really a problem for general use... such conditions happen only when I try to tip stall it on purpose!
Nice little review...Makes you wonder how they got the Tailplane incedence so badly wrong though..?
I agree about Autolaunch on a Maiden, it really does make sense doesnt it..?
Its 1-2 degrees off... only! Haha
Actually... auto does make sense, as long as you make sure all control surfaces are going in the correct directions. Could get ugly otherwise! :D
@@ArxangelRC Otherwise it's called auto crash, but yeah check surfaces and its great.
Yup! :)
10:40 post-totalitarian urban hell
Not post... sadly... :(
3 years later did they fix the tail?
I only fly manual, autopilot is only for a RTH when I get a FS, so that’s important to me! Thanks
Well I was testing the new tail when I lost the plane, but it was behaving better for sure.
are you using the standard power combo with ld 2820 595kv motors?
Don't think so! This plane had 2814 510Kv motors, which, at the time, came straight from MFD's power pack for it! Now I see they've changed the motors (www.myflydream.com/products/d-0/332.html ) but at the start, this is what it came with!
Hey great video again. Lotsa effort. Haha at first i saw the title im like why would you want to test a MFD in the crosswind. for fun.... hahaa
Hahahahaha, yeah, it does sound like that at a first glance. :)
Arx
Thanks for the review.
Have you get de Volantex Ranger 2400 yet?
You are welcome! No, have not received it yet, it is still somewhere along the route!
I heard you got your tail!! How does one go about it :) Mine's been standing on the desk for months now waiting for it's new tail :) I doubt that MFD will send it to me from a sense of responsibility, so do you perhaps know where one can buy the new tail? Thanks!
Actually you should write to MFD if you want to get the new tail... tell them where you bought it... etc., and they should be able to ship one out to you!
nice review! I see the propellers are in the inward inward turning configuration, shouldn't they turn outward for better airflow over the wings?
Thanks! Ammmm... not sure about that... usually we make them to turn inward, because it will be better if one motor stops... otherwise the torque roll will make flying the plane and correcting for the only one motor quite difficult!
When using inward running props the assymetric thrust will have a less yawing effect when u have an engine failure aswell.
Yeah... :)
As you are writing it's a mapping plane but fly without camera for mapping, I have a question for you ;-) How a camera could be trigger by autopilot with omnibus F4 ? Pixhawk have advantage with relay pin but omnibus f4 does not have, what do you suggest ?
Well... yes, it is a mapping plane, but I do not have any gear for mapping to install in it, other than just mounting a regular action camera facing downwards! The code does support the trigger function, though I am not sure the Omnibus F4 Pro has enough outputs to work for this, BUT there are other boards out there with more outputs, like the Matek F405 Wing for instance, and that one too can work with this code, so it might get the job done!
@@ArxangelRC Well ! Just ask today and found how it works, answer is here => discuss.ardupilot.org/t/copter-3-6-0-released/34509/7
Glad you figured it out! :)
How does this plane hold up 5 years later? Still a good buy?
Most definitely! Seems to be at a pretty decent price too - s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DEjuwn7
Do you recommend or is there a recognized model number for the elevator and rudder servo?
The PNP set comes with specific servos, but really you can use anything that is generally in the same size, so it will fit in the beds. If you follow the link in the video description to my blog, somewhere in there is a photo of the servos. The 3 that are the same are for ailerons and elevator, and the one that is different is for the rudder.
Alone except for the random guy standing beside your car?
Or was that a ghost?
Yeah... there are random people coming and going throughout the day... some stop to watch for a while! :)
Very good review. Could do some even more detailed when you feel some build is very good, say, for beginners, occasionally.
I could... but I really don't like to get into too much detail in videos, so as not to make them too long! I will do the blog post for this purpose, and it will be very detailed! Also, this particular plane is not the most suitable for beginners! :)
Does the mini crosswind have flaps?
No.
hey mate do u know what software platform to use for swarmed rc airplane flights.. i mean suppose 3 airplanes flying in pattern and landing in a coordinated way and doing a search operation and covering a large area as a swarm for good quick work ... i need to do all through one single ground station controller... so just 1 radio and a p.c..
you should be able to duplicate the arduplane parameters and setup in all, and fly them together, configured for full auto mode. they would not know the others are there, however, so might want to stage them, so they do not run into each other. have to look into what radio allows you to bind 3 receivers to a single control system.. EZUHF was going to offer that feature, but as far as I know, have not yet. What is the application?
MFD Rlink will allow multiple receivers to be bound. It's a great UHF system.
Sadly, I am no expert on swarms but Mission Planner does allow a few models to be monitored separately.
So I flipped the switch to manual mode and prepared for the end of the world. That is too funny.
Hahahaha, well... that was what I was expecting after reading the RCGroups thread... turned out not to be that big of an issue...
ArxangelRC take EVERYTHING you read from RCGROUP with a grain of salt. I personally closed my account with that group a couple years ago since all I ever received out of that groups feedback was sarcasm and getting ridiculed for everything I posted.
Hope all is well. I have to disagree with your thoughts about the Crosswind. Although the tail may not be perfect....I own two and both have given me dozens of flawless impressive missions. I don't think a determination ever exists to engineer foam FPV aircraft based on modern technology and test results. To obtain premium flight characteristics. At the end of the day they are inexpensive, low quality models...with no expectation of any life longevity. Off the subject I wanted to write to you about the Eagletree Systems Eagle Eyes FPV unit. As you know they are sold as to provide frequency diversity and serve as an FPV Vector antenna tracker. I have worked since October 2017 to find one that works...and have been unable to do so. I own several and have many Vector units. I have never seen one that actually works. I would be eternally grateful if you knew of someone or somewhere that a working Eagle Eyes based antenna tracker exists. Great review by the way...as always.
Hey Paul, thanks for the compliments! Not sure which part of my thoughts about the Crosswind you disagree with... despite the tail issue I do like the plane and how it flies, which seems to be in line with what your opinion is, if I am understanding you correctly! More and more attention is starting to get turned towards these aircraft, so I expect soon enough we should start seeing some properly designed planes out there, even if they are foam! After all... most of the full size jets nowadays would be impossible to fly in manual modes, if it wasn't for all of these electronics on board keeping them flying in a straight line!!!! :D
As for the Eagle Eyes thing... I've barely heard of it... but definitely don't know anybody using it! Why are they even selling it if it doesn't work? Do you have one of those systems?

What digital servos do you recommend?
Coronas all the way! :)
What would be best model for Mapping, also converting to VTOL ??
Either this or the Believer! I like this a little bit more because it is a bit more stable in the air!
@@ArxangelRC I have loved watching alot of your videos over the past year. It would be nice to have a video that goes into detail on preparing this model for mapping and cover all the details. I have several multirotors but I need a fixed wing for mapping large areas. If you have any video links or can make a comprehensive video for a mapping build, it would be greatly appreciated!
I've got no video links for that at this time... and also I do not know much about mapping to be honest... but will try to think of something! I can no longer do a video on this plane, as it got lost... but might use one of the other ones I have, the setup is pretty much identical anyway, just the airframe will be different.
@@ArxangelRC I saw the video where it got lost on the top of the mountain. Bummer!! Thanks for the videos.
You are welcome mate! :)
That blown out sky is not a good look for a camera that's supposed to be race-able.
Well... actually as far as I can tell the camera performs pretty good... and I do prefer to be able to see the ground well... at least on the planes! Also... this is a pretty cheap camera compared to the RunCam/Foxeer competition... can't be perfect! :)
did they ever fix it?
Not sure! Would have to ask MFD directly!
Paying too much for a piece of foam crap.. no manual, issues etc..that plane should be sold No more than $100!
In theory yes...although I wouldn't call it crap... it is a great plane, regardless of what material it is made from! Foam at least forgives some mistakes... balsa doesn't forgive any! :)
