I am originally from the South Kivu region of eastern Congo and belong to the Shi tribe. As a victim of war, I am now a refugee living in the United States. While I respect my sister Adele's right to express her opinion in response to General Kayumba’s interview, I disagree with her perspective on the tribal issues faced by the Congolese government.
Congo is home to over 400 tribes, with the Banyamulenge being one of the largest. All tribes, without exception, have experienced discrimination from other tribes at some point. However, this does not justify any tribe taking up arms against another. I was born in 1975 and went to school with members of the Banyamulenge community, with whom I have friendships. In my experience, there has never been a genocide against the Banyamulenge.
I believe Adele's statements indirectly support Paul Kagame, who is committing genocide in Congo. While she is right on many points, she is misleading the public regarding the war issues in the DRC. I would welcome the opportunity to be interviewed on these issues.
