I just go whenever I want something, either a specific item or a routine staple. My husband passed away unexpectedly in his sleep 5 years ago, my daughter is grown and married with 3 kids (from 16 to 1.5) and my youngest is in his 3rd year of college, and I am a disabled vet/retired RN & retired elementary school teacher, living in a very rural area, so no neighbors to visit. It was rough at first but I have become accustomed to it, now I'm enjoying my solitude. I've become the crazy cat lady lol. Not really, but I try to keep an eye on a family of cats, a family of raccoons and a little teacup chihuahua that I "rescued" as a stray. Everyone asks me a lot of TV show programs but the only time my TV is turned on is when my son or grandkids come to visit. As soon as I get up, I make a cup of coffee, and feed the cats, take my meds, and go sit on my porch and drink my coffee and do my devotionals for the day. And that's pretty much my morning. Then I call my best friend, we talk, have fun together then it's lunch time.

Well for a long time we lived on a farm, so we were producing our own eggs, and a lot of our pork and chicken (Had both laying and meat hens) and we had a garden and we would pack extras and freeze it. I just remember having two large freezers, because we also had to buy in bulk a lot, especially since we also didn't live close to a grocery store.
As for meals we ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches, shepherd's pie, spaghetti, homemade pizza, mac and cheese and salad. We snacked a lot on yogurt as well, carrots and celery. Easy to make meals generally. She also didn't home school and for a long time was a SAHM so she would do a lot of baking during the day for our snacks.
And for reference, not that it makes a lot of difference. I'm from Canada. You don't often hear about large families in Canada, but we existed!

    • @FreckleFinance

It was a staple lunch! I actually eat completely differently now because I focus more on healthy eating, and from what I've seen you also feed your family healthier than we ate, but of course we all work with the money and resources we have!

I recently started freezer "bagging" kind of like freezer cooking but I don't cook anything ahead of time. I just fill each bag with the meat and the rest of the ingredients. I do 2 weeks at a time and I am loving it! All I have to do is either dump it in a crockpot or in a casserole dish when I get home. Looks like its saves me money too. Your kids are so well behaved!

I have 5 kiddos under the age of 8, that I homeschool, and I just LOVE your videos! I wish we had a Smart Shopper near us, those deals are amazing!! We just have Aldi and Walmart, and our 'Penny Pincher' type scratch and dent stores are still very expensive, only saving about $0.10-$0.20/item and they are usually expired. But I'm loving your videos and doing great with shopping at Aldi and a few things at Walmart or Meijer. I just want to say that videos like yours are so encouraging to moms like me, trying to juggle kids, house, and our DR budget. Your videos are a huge blessing to me and I recommend them to others. Large families are not the norm anymore, and we get a lot of negativity about ours, and I had always felt lost/depressed that maybe our decision wasn't the best. But I'm so glad moms like you show how it's amazing, fun, and a wonderful thing. I love my family, love my kids, and love our life. Thank you!

I enjoyed watching this! The extra carts in the stores, the back of the van packed to the top, and the groceries all over and around your dining room table are all familiar to my family!!! We are a family of 7, including 3 teenage boys, and we do this same thing every three months. I take a whole day and go to a number of different stores. Then I fill in with quick trips throughout the 3 months to restock bread, milk, and fresh fruits and veggies. We have been doing this for about 3 years and it has saved us a lot of money.

***** We have been doing quarterly shopping for about 3 years. I spent a number of weeks planning out 90 days worth of menus and writing out all the ingredients. After I collected all my lists, I attempted my first big shopping trip. It went well, and better plans have evolved since that first trip! Right now I am trying to make menus for summer that have more salads, and take advantage of fresh produce. During the winter my menus consist of more soups for the cold winter nights!

We are a bi-weekly shopping family for our family of 5 (at least currently 5). I would love to start shopping monthly, but budgeting only allows us to go at the beginning and middle of the month, since that is when the paychecks come in! We do live on a farm and raise and preserve most of our own produce, as well as, raise dairy goats for a lot of our dairy item needs and really only rely on milk from the grocery during the winter months. However, since I will be returning to being a stay at home mom after this school year, we will be able to keep some of our goats milking through the winter and I will be able to make more cheese, yogurt, and other things throughout the winter and not just enjoy them in the summer! I am definitely looking forward to that!

    • @amberfeist8921
      @amberfeist8921 8 лет назад

No problem! I am hoping to start vlogging and sharing some things that we do with our goats and all that fun stuff. So, if you need any help when it's time for goats, let me know :-)
We had chickens...but then had a dog issue ripping through our fence. My mom has chickens and more eggs than she can use, so now we just trade.:-)

I love your big refrigerator. We are a family of 6 and live in an apartment. The apartment we live in has a small refrigerator, when every someone opens the door after I go shopping for grocery things will fall out. I go shopping every two weeks, I would like to get to where I only go once a month. I hope in the next few weeks to get a chest freezer. When you all go shopping do people every make comments about your family size? When I am out with my four kids someone always say that I have my hands full. Thank you for sharing your life with us. I look forward to seeing your videos.

Great about the multiple refrigeration units! We have a family of 8, and like yours, we also have a couple of teenagers. We also do a large once a month shopping. Ours is due to transit even though the stores are relatively close. With homeschooling and little ones, it is too challenging time wise to shop more often. Our two oldest ride to the store on bicycles for needed produce as the middle and end of the month get closer. I have found that having a few weeks of meal plans, although they may shuffle about, does help me to keep on track. Alot of the unplanned items that enter the house are through pantries and can keep us in fruit, eggs, buttermilk, and some produce. With the items from the pantries, we often have to sort, clean and freeze or cook right away so inside the menu has to have a great amount of flexibility. It was wonderful to see your house workings. Oddly enough this tends to be my relaxation time for me. Strange habits...

I LUV that your frig is covered with pix! this month I finally got hubby on board with monthly shopping. we spent $147, but there is only 3 of us. we'll have to buy milk and bread (hubby will not eat frozen bread) each week. I meal planned this time (only 7 different meals x's 4 wks - my boys luv the old basics) and it seemed to really help. altho we did forget the furbabies for a whole month shopping but we passed right by a grocery store last night so there was no wasted gas and we stocked up for them for the month.
I would luv an extra frig for my garage so I could get milk for at least two weeks. and your closure system for the freezer is awesome - as long as it closes that's all that matters!

Family of 5, I buy our meat once a year and deep freeze it in the basement from a farmers co-op. It's all free range and grain fed at much better prices than I would get from any stores. I buy rice, pasta, toilet paper, cereal, nuts and other items that have long shelf lives every few months in bulk. Fruits and vegetables and sliced bread, I buy every 1-3 days. I like them as fresh as possible and I didn't enjoy growing my own. This works well for us and we rarely eat out this way. I wouldn't want to get our fruits and veg any less often than every three days. We'd also have to give up the play room for storage. I prefer just one fridge and one deep freezer. I feel disappointed with myself when I use canned or frozen veg, so I really try to get off my butt and walk to the store. Given my proximity to the store, it's sheer laziness to not walk there. I have no excuse. But yeah, this works well with a 3 bedroom house in large metro city.
I know by family of 9 standards, 5 isn't a big family. But if you live in an urban area, 5 is a big family compared to other families we know. Most couples we know have 0-2 kids.

Heck! I wish we had discount stores like Aldi and Sharp shopper here in Phoenix just for me! I'm from Minnesota originally we had Aldi there plus we had the hostess discount stores for cheap breads and buns etc....I miss those. We do have Costco of course which i love and I work as an accountant for walmart so have my discount. 10%may not be much but those pennies add up in a year. even though I'm single its no excuse not to have a good budget and find deals as I can. i just need to find the motivation. I will try, God blesses me everyday with a nice roof over my head, a car to get me to work, a wonderful bestie, and money to buy food. I need to do my part now. Wish me luck!

So very similar to your family ;) We have cut out highly processed foods, refined sugar and eat as much organic food as possible. So I can no longer shop ahead it seems since we buy lots of fresh produce. =( I shop weekly now but will stock up on some things when i can(rice, kale that i freeze for smoothies, etc). I found pineapple on sale this week for.99 each so i bought 6 that i will cut up and freeze. I shop a couple stores and our budget is $150 a week and I stay fairly on budget. If I could have a garden that number would be slashed by at least half *dreaming* ;) Anyway, I always enjoy looking in on your family! We shop fairly similarly! There are 9 of us and we shop biweekly because we cant get together the $ to go once a month. But i shop like I go once a month i just buy half of what i need one trip and the other half the next.

I tend to shop at least once a week, sometimes more. I only have 3 kids so far but I am always blowing the budget. Thanks for sharing! Lots of 'food' for thought! I want to get more organized and stay closer to budget. I just need to figure out where to shop besides just Costco and Wal-Mart for better deals.

***** My husband wants to start doing that but I don't know that I am emotionally ready for it. Trying to figure it all out. My goal this month is to stop eating out. I think I took myself out, my kids out or my family out to eat probably at least 12 times. BAD!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!

I save so much money going to Costco. I also have never had to pay for our membership since my mother in law gives it to us for Christmas so it's even better for me :)

We shop biweekly mostly - just because that is how my husband gets paid. We only have two kids and I'm really bad about wanting to be cleaned out in the pantry and frig before we make a shopping trip. Not my favorite activity 😀

I have started shopping once a month for a family of six since I saw that you do it and it does make things so much easier. One thing that I have a question on is I see you hit all the stores and then go home what do you do about your refrigerated stuff the yogurt the eggs the milk etc. I know that right now it's cold so things stay cool in the car but what do you do in the summer months do you take coolers with you? We are blessed at the moment that we can go in one direction to one store and then drop stuff off at the house then go the other direction to the other stores that we need to go to. We go to Sharp shopper Adlis and we go to BJ's since we can use manufacturer coupons there as well as the store coupons and then we go to our local grocery store cards for anything else that we might need.

***** Good point, I'm looking to cut our shopping time down by not having to go home and drop off, I might look into insulated tote bags even if i can do 2 stores before having to go home it will save time! Right now it takes all day, hubby will go with me to the first half the day and then take the kids home (we have 4 kids under 6) for a nap while i go for the 2nd half of the day. Please keep the video coming! I am always looking for tips for large families, was to save, time savers, homeschool tips and how to get it all done!

Growing up we did shopping once a month because the nearest grocery store was an hour drive away. We did our shopping and then stopped to eat somewhere, never rushed and never had a problem. I know some people who use an ice chest for their stuff that has to stay frozen but mostly its fine.

I've been trying to work up the nerve to do a monthly grocery shop (we currently shop biweekly).. And my family is only like half the size of yours at four people! LOL You've inspired me. I think next month I may try it...great video!

Thank you for the great tips! I've recently started meal-planning again which has helped IMMENSELY with my biweekly shopping and also not over spending (or having to run out to the store to get "one thing" and then fifty to sixty bucks later, walking out! lol). So I just have to now work the budget a little bit so that we are spending one chunk of money once in the month instead of spreading it out into shopping trips. :-)

My closest Walmart is 35 minutes away and my Sam's Club is 1hr35mins away. I much prefer doing a Bulk-once-a-month haul for most goods. And then small odds and ends weekly. We are a family of five plus my parents Who live next door. I would prefer to have the storage room and resources for a Complete Once a Month haul and not have to go back to the store All month long. lol....

Oh a discount store! I miss having discount grocery stores! I shop once a month on my own with a 5 year old, 3 year old and 1 year old (talk about fun! lol). We hit up Sam's, HyVee, Dollar Tree, a bread discount store and sometimes a few other local ones depending on what's on sale. We leave as early as we can and get it done before the stores get busy. In that respect, I'm lucky my kids get up uber early.

I love it! So familiar to me. I have 7 children too! So how do you keep your kids from raiding the fridge and eating most of it in the first week? This is my issue. We have plenty for the first week and a half or so,and then we scrounge the rest of the month.

New subscriber. I'm a mom of 13. We go to Costco, too. We have the executive membership so you earn $ back and we use that to pay for the next year's membership. Did you know that you can freeze milk? You need to make sure that there's enough room for expansion, but it works. You do need to shake the milk to use it. Some people don't like the taste, but we use milk for cooking more than drinking in our home. (Freezing Gogurts makes a great summer snack for the kids.) I'm working on binge watching your videos to see what recipes you use. I usually shop once-a-week. If I shop at Costco, I don't shop elsewhere except to get goat's milk for my youngest as he can't do cow's milk at this time. Keep making the videos. I find them encouraging!

I would definitely be making homemade yogurts with how much you eat .....Also Find a Couponer ...and even if you paid the Couponer a percentage you would STILL make out way better. my Aunt fed 9 kids and her husband and many guests on less than half what she was spending get buy hooking up with a Couponer and paying a percentage to them. Love your channel.
