Shawn was getting an inside scoop in Tony's EDC when he shares this INTENSE combat story.
This has to be one of the most intense close-quarters, hand-to-hand gunfights in a war zone. After being held at gunpoint, Tony Cowden meets the enemy with resistance using his own firearm, and they begin to engage in a ground gunfight. When his pistol went out of battery, he fixed the malfunction on the enemy's back and finished them off.

To his tourniquet comment, Tony's 100% right. I'm a Sheriff's Deputy and had an incident involving a guy that was in a rollover wreck that severed his arm at the elbow because he had it resting out the window. A trucker got a belt on the arm before I got on scene. I arrived on scene 3 minutes after the 911 call, grabbed my bag, ripped my tourniquet out and put it on higher than the belt and applied pressure on the nub with my hand and some celox gauze. That trucker saved the driver's life with that belt, even though it wasn't stopping the bleeding completely. I was kneeling in 2 pints of his blood while treating him. The trucker gave him enough time to get me there and then I gave him enough time for EMS to get there and do their thing. An improvised tourniquet does a lot more than people make it out to.

His point about networking so even a city boy with no real skills can at least have a few country boy buddies is spot on. His neighbor being a farmer/rancher and him being the security makes perfect sense. We don't have to learn everything! Just bring a skill and make friends!

I remember during my 3rd deployment with the 82nd 1st/504th to OIF I noticed that when we had an SF ODA, or part of a JSOC task force or even an element of SAD shooters come through one of our combat outposts that you immediately recognized these were dangerous and determined men. It sounds cliche but I can honestly say some of the most humble, reserved guys I met during my 8 years in were dudes like this that I hold in the highest esteem. They don’t need to tell you how tough they are, if you have a pulse and basic threat assessment skills you are already well aware.

This happened in OIF 1 when I was attached to 101st I think May 2003 …First time I came across any bad ass operators was when I was in a courthouse in downtown Mosul that had been blown up by people that didn’t want elections and we were there overnight and four delta guys rolled up and asked if they could relax for a little bit seeing them they all look like they were 6’4 brick shit houses wrapped in the local garb bearded out underneath it They were carrying the best and best ass weapons that we certainly didn’t have. Lol. They talk to us for about a half an hour or so gave them some food and then at some point in time they kinda just disappeared and I was in awe of there, cool calm and collected demeanor being where we were and I had asked a few questions about you know how do I get to be where you’re at type thing and one of them was like just be the best don’t be too arrogant don’t be too quiet kno your shit and study and learn a language. And that’s just the beginning. I wish I got a picture with the guys just to have but I didn’t want to be disrespectful. how is wondered if and where they went after

I am a retired Deputy Sheriff with 20 years of SWAT, 15 years EOD, Worked u/c etc. I picked up a court security gig after I retired. The prior security director had purchased bear spray for the court staff and probation officers. When I started checking the shelf life and also wanting to get the latest and greatest, I did a little research and learned that the term "bear spray" doesn't mean it's proportionately more potent. Infact, the oleoresin capsicum by volume is less than half the potency of what is offered for personal defense, in some cases. Shawn, let Tony know about this. It pays to read the label, sometimes, haha.
I made a few calls and was told that the bears olfactory has way more receptors so it doesn't take as much of the pepper to accomplish the needed results. I did, however, like the quart size containers!

    • @tacantey
      @tacantey 27 дней назад +1

This is true. In addition, bear spray is regulated by one of the wildlife agencies (can’t remember which one), which is what requires the lower concentration. Pepper spray doesn’t have that same limitation.

Most people consider raised voices as a fight and men need to work shit out sometimes, people need to stay out of other people's juice and yes there's a lot wrong with someone bear spraying their teenage sons, non lethal doesn't mean non damaging furthermore just cause she's the mom doesn't give her carte blanche to hurt her son's, if someone stepped in and sprayed me with bear mace while I'm in a consensual fight...there would be serious justified consequences

    Shawn
    Thank you very much
I’ve been watching these episodes when I can ever since I first found them on my big screen TV and every part of these interviews with Tony Cowden are just perfect in every way sound, editing, quality is just perfect.
His tails are great and pure awesomeness.
Thanks again for having him on, his wisdom is invaluable and I just like him I don’t have a bug out bag for the same reason, why leave behind a lot of your best defenses to go out somewhere else where the natives don’t want you.
All though I do carry an away bag, ammo, tools, food, water, med supplies, guns and so on.
But I need to get some bear spray because that is excellent advice.

As a female my grandma had me a BB gun at 5 and was making bets with her male buddies about my shooting skills. She told me don’t lose my money. I never did. Then she moved me up to her 38. I own a lot now. I was raised 30 minutes from any town. We didn’t just run to town. We kept things we needed. My stepdad is a veterinarian who I hope can medically care for us and I have one daughter now that’s a nurse. I wish I still had my grandma to teach me how to garden and can. My great granddaddy hunted and trapped selling pelts at the local store. I remember him cleaning a huge turtle he caught and making soup. I didn’t eat it but would if I was starving. I can skin animals. I can fish. I just need to work on my gardening skills.

Uncanny resemblance to James Bond. Very good segment, informative and knowledgeable. Great ideas. Good guy to know. Like the Sig, just expensive. First I remember for a small pistol double stack, Grenadal, that became the Kel-Tec, the P-11 was out several years before Sig, Glock, Ruger & Taurus started catching up. Bear spray is some pretty nasty stuff, and it'll flat-out blister you. Heard a story about a guy that got dropped off in Alaska to go fishing and he had bear spray with him and his mosquito repellent. I don't know if he was a city slicker but he mistook one for the other and bear sprayed himself. The guide flew back with the airplane to pick him up and heard the guy screaming down in the marsh area. He thought for sure that a bear might have got ahold of him but realized what had happened when he got to him and his head was all swelled up really bad and blistered all over. He had to take him to the hospital, because he actually sprayed himself right in the face. I remember seeing a recent meme that said we need to take the warning stickers off and let people just weed themselves out... LOL 🤣

Fun fact: Bear spray is chemically weaker than mace or pepper spray, This is because bear spray cant be so powerful that it impleads or damages the sense of smell for the bear (considering that's how it finds its food). So if your goal is to have a more powerful "self defense spray" id go with mace or pepper spray for people. Often bear spray does have more range and does work pretty good too.
