Practitioners today have enough experience in UI design that they have been exposed to design rules, but it is essential that they understand the psychology behind the rules in order to effectively apply them. Watching Google talks reveals a lot about the company's "culture". It's very self-focused - dozens of examples get shown, all from Google's workspace. Given this is on visual factors, Apple's interfaces might be relevant. This talker, like many Googlers, declares facts that are far from scientifically certain. He stirs the audience by attributing high intelligence to them. "We're the smartest here." The meta-view isn't touched on - why manipulate people, rather than solve their problems?
Google is a search company. It's search engine has developed over time. But it suffers the monopoly blues: don't rock the boat. Self-congratulatory attitudes, skimming the surface of topics rather than examining controversy, well-fed but not obese bodies, are probably found in most early monopolies. But when you're first the danger's from behind, and they're not looking over their shoulders at Google.
Ironic on how this video is talking about best practices to accommodate how our brain works and yet this is a pretty bad video production. Most of the video shows the speaker referencing the slides instead of showing the slides! Showing the speaker talking about the slides does not benefit me at all. A small pic of the speaker in the lower left corner would be better than showing the speaker the majority of the time and occasionally showing the slides. And when the slide is shown its only on screen for about 5 seconds - like seriously you thought we were able to read and contemplate what we're reading in 5 seconds! I spent most of the video thinking "for Pete's sake please show us the slide that he is talking about!!!" Come on guys, this isn't rocket science.
He definitely isn't public speaker. He is nervous. It's not fun to listen to him.
Yet what he explains is must-know for all designers and most programmers. Or better read the book :)
His book is fantastic.

I actually enjoyed this lecture, alot of new terms but I got the gist.
