People getting upset over a cheap but filly reliable $200 gun is funny. I have at least 7500 rounds through mine and ots still great. Paid $180 for it. You get the dame reliability out of the 88 as you do the 500 and 590a1 if youre not tossing it off roof tops. Way more reliable than my 28 year old rem870 for a third the price. A mossberg may mot be a Benelli but it will last as long if not longer. Crazy reliablility for a cheap usa made gun
I just bought one and it came with the studs for the swivels already mounted. I ordered a set before I got it because I had one previously and had to add them myself. This is one of my favorite shotguns
I have the same exact 88.. and I luv it.. great all around shotgun.. and with a nice shotgun case a couple boxes of shells a 2pk of velcro shell holders I was all in for $400... can't beat it...
I was trying to decide between a new 88 for $200.00 at Academy, & a used (like new) Remington 870 Hardwood Home Defense for $240.00 at a pawn shop. All my research indicated the 88 was a great gun despite rattling a lot, if you didn't plan to shoot it into pieces. I went with the more 'solid' 870 (which I might regret should parts become hard to find).
With places like Numrich gun parts out there you should be good on parts, especially with the popularity of the 870 but as for 88 reliability, James Reeves over at TFB TV did a 505 round test on it and the Maverick perfomed like a boss. But...the 870 definitely has its advantages.
@@travisp11I have no doubt the Maverick 88 is a reliable shotgun, I'm just not sure it's made for a lot of heavy usage over many years. Conversely, how many home defense shotguns end up with really high round counts? Very few is my guess. For my purposes it would've been a good choice. If money was no object I'd have the upgraded/improved models from Mossberg, & Remington.
@@Salieri47 James Reeves video he put those 505 rounds thru the Maverick 88 in about 75 minutes. And I would not be surprised if it took a couple hundred more.
Break in is easy, use brake parts cleaner to get all of the packing oil out, then spray rem oil in it, and rack it a hundred times, respray with brake cleaner, rack it when it’s dry a dozen times, and then wipe it out, spray with oil again, rack it, and wipe it down lightly It will rack and cycle 100x smoother. The bolt and other internals will show some shine, but that’s where the rub points have been worked smooth. It’s then good to go.
Seems a bit overkill. I'd just deep clean it to get any manufacturing swarf out of it AND the oily preservative, lubricate it (RemOil is too light, like water with no staying power) and just USE IT. Nothing beats actually firing and cycling rounds through it instead of just racking the slide over and over (which just does one thing). Use dummy rounds if you want but they are a poor substitute for real shells. In fact, the break-in procedure could be accomplished at the same time you pattern your shotgun with your intended loads. In fact, you should be patterning and breaking-in your shotgun with several different types of shells to find the one that your shotgun likes.....but I digress.
Its a great shotgun. I love Mossbergs. I have that same one you got there. Got it a few days ago. I also got a Mossberg 500. They are awesome. Well built.

Nice to see an unboxing so people know how the item should arrive. Those several blemishes right out of the box does not bode well though. Are you sure it was "as-new" or did the shop sell you a display model? If it's a "display model" then it is going to show wear from hundreds of customers finger-banging it all over, bumps and scratches from minor handling wear, dragging it out of the display rack and dragging it across the counter top, etc.; anything that a clerk and customers will inadvertently do to it. Maybe it's Mossberg's fault and it happened on the assembly line?
It came out of a box from the back at Scheels. They had several on the rack and they usually get a new one out from the back when they can. This one looked like it had no handling other than assembly and packing.
I noticed a few on the racks at Scheels that did but I honestly thought that they were from customers testing out which mounts work. I’m glad they are doing that now.
Didn't Matt say there are aftermarket trigger guards that aren't plastic? I thought I recall that(and the safety) being the only real difference between the Maverick and the Mossbergs.
@@KossoffFan I think that will be an issue. Depending on what the 590 has which I believe is a tang safety, the trigger pack probably wont match up with the internals.
Great cheap shotgun. I got the shorter one and it’s much like yours they are a perfect as 500 or 590 but for the money beats any turkey made pump shotgun
Its an outstanding entry level tool. It can be extremely modified as time goes on. If you have the money go ahead and get the 500, if not you wobe disappointed with the 88. I have one of each and wouldn't trade them.
Excellent Elite Spanker is the best brand name ever. I must have. 835 review and field test w at least 100 3.5" rounds? And orthopedic recomendations follow up.
No, it will not fit the 20" barrel because the 7 shot magazine is too long for the 28" barrel---at the location where the barrel nut screws into the magazine tube, there is mismatch in length. Next time buy the Maverick 88 Security/Field Combo as it comes with two barrels (18.5" and 28") for about $293 while the 28" barrel bought separately is about $250. 🤪 Crazy price for a single barrel, that's basically the price for another Maverick 88!
Hey Travis: i concur with your findings and conclusion of the Maverick 88 Security model: in 2019 I bought the new Maverick 88 Security with the 18.5" barrel 5+1 capacity with the FDE furniture. I picked mine up for $188.00 new back then and it's a great 12 gage shotgun. At the time I didn't know about the 20" 7+1 version and my LGS didn't carry that model...otherwise I would have opted for that one. Here's a story: as soon as I brought it home I had it up against my wall near the safe. I was handling my unloaded revolver that fell out of my hand, bounced off the carpeted floor, rolled over towards the new shotgun, and hit the stock. I barely had my shotgun 1 hour and it put a gash/nick in the stock. I covered it with a shell holder that goes over the stock, but I was so pissed. I called Mossberg and at that time they didn't have any extra stocks in FDE to sell me (they only made enough for the production run). I never went back to the website to look again, so maybe now it's changed and they stock them for individual sale. I will follow up on that. Anyhow, great video.
Cool! There are some websites that sell aftermarket furniture for the 88 so if you don't mind spending a little $$$ you can get some awesome looking furninture.
I own two of the same security model , great shotgun , the only knock is the horrible safety, its absolutely terrible, plastic cheap and not very positive, I hate it . I'd rather spend more money for the 590 or 500 just because of that safety.
Disassemble the trigger group and fine-tune the safety? Deburr or file it so it slides easily and reassemble. I don't mind the safety location of the Mav 88, because it allows you to add a pistol grip or pistol grip buttstock and still have easy access to the safety. Many many other shotguns have a trigger guard safety; Remington 870, Winchester 1200/1300/SXP, Ithaca 37 and several Mossberg semi-auto shotguns have the trigger safety too.
