I’ve watched a couple of these disassembly videos and why did NOONE but you mention the tab on the top of the bolt can be pressed in. That makes things so much easier

Contrast Ive owned my 88 for yrs. Somewhere around 3500 rounds. Never cleaned. Only a good wipe down. Never had a problem. These things are tanks in durability.

Mossberg just sources different parts from across the border and then assemble it in south Texas to make it more affordable. That’s why the maverick is just as reliable as the main options, damn I love America.
Thank you for this video. I have built a couple ARs. I have had every one of my handguns completely disassembled but have never completely broken down my Maverick 88. I always just remove the barrel and clean it and hit everything else with an air hose. Now I know how to break it completely down and put it back together.
it's not necessary unless it gets a shit down of carbon down there after a lot of rounds....or after hunting outside in the rain... keeping them mostly dry and free of lube keeps them from getting gunked up where you NEED to take it down.
Just bought my Maverick 88 yesterday (it's my first shotgun ever) and used this guide to get through the first cleaning. It wasn't too bad of a process though it's a little confusing since some parts don't budge unless the pump is worked one way or the other. Now it feels even smoother than when I first brought it home and can't wait to shoot it! 👍

For a second I thought you were a Mossberg Tech! Hands down the best maintenance TUTORIAL I have seen so far. Just picked my security model last week and already put several rounds through it. READY for the first maintenance. Have the same version as you (black on black) same stock shell carrier and same velcro side saddle. I will also recommend the heat shield and truglo green pointer sight. 👍

VERY nice job on a deep cleen take down. I usually do that ever 500 rounds or so (usually I just got as far as taking off the barrle and then CLP cleaning the exposted part of the bolt and just rack it a few times to transfer lube...no need to take it dow every time you use it)
This video helped me the most. Thank you for the light and showing on the inside. I had the hardest time trying to get the action/bolt to work. but the tab you pressed on the bolt made moving everything so much easier! no one else said that.
I just went through a hell of a summer in Alaska. Lots of bears and rain and I didn't clean my gun at all. It seems like it was definitely a bit dirty. There seems to be a pit in the barrel but I didn't clean it for 6 months. It's been out in the wild for 6 months. It's seems fine. I'm very happy with the gun. There was one point that it wasn't cycling because the rust from a rain storm. I just squirted a bunch of lube in there and it ran fine. All in all, I would buy again. It did well. I got the shorter barrel and it is almost too long for what I like in thick brush as bear protection but it was definitely nice to have when things bumped in the night. Only Warning shots were fired all summer. I didn't wanna kill anything if I could help it. Great cheap gun!

Yes! This was a successful simple maintenance tutorial for my Mossberg Maverick 88 unit, even matches this video's security version with 20" barrel and synthetic FDE stock & forearm color. 😊 I agree, the toughest part to learn on reassembly for my first time today is getting the trigger group popped back into place with those two thin metal pieces that won't always stay in place if the shotgun is tilted too much. It's definitely like trying to play "twister" with your fingers. 😅 Still, this is easier than reassembling a Marlin model 60 in 22LR after cleaning in my honest opinion. Lol

Was searching for the G45-5, hard to find one due to popular item, and finally added one to my collection. At 70 yrs young, still practice the 7yd and little more on occasion, and that G45-5 performs. Has improvements over the G19-3, and is now my CCW. 17 rd mag had me hooked, and short slide/barrel flies out of holster. Thank you for sharing. Your vids are spot on. Good luck. Well done.

I've always been taught to only clean in the direction of the barrel. It adds a bit of time to cleaning your weapon since you have to unscrew/rescrew on the tools, and it might not make a huge difference, but I do it every time.
Just got myself a Maverick 88 took it to the range for some target shooting and just cleaned for the first time.Your video definitely helped me out. ✌️

When I was married my wife was fine with it so long as I wiped off the counter top with a Clorox wipe when I was done. Plus, the Adsense revenue the vidoes generate quiets them down a bit. Thanks for watching!

I always do just to inspect and make sure there are no issues. You also get manufacturing grease and oil inside the gun when they are built and that can gunk up.

As a retired gunsmith and police armourer for thirty years, 75% of weapons I had in for repair were simply poorly maintained and filthy. A sad thing especially when the weapon belonged to a fellow officer. And I was impressed that you use Clenzoil. After 63 years of shooting and cleaning my weapons, I've used dozens of oils, cleaners, and such. None proved to be superior. The absolute best is Clenzoil. There's nothing better...

The only thing is unlike my pistols, I don’t think I’ll ever be ‘friggin genius Forrest Gump’ about reassembling the 88; it’s always tricky for me to get it back together, BUT this video seems like just the instructions I need to get it done faster next time I clean it. so a couple years back i saw episode of alaskan bush people where they lubed there hunting rifles with animal fat so i tried it on my maverick that was a mistake it gummed it up it would cycle the shells but it wouldnt fire tonight i decided it was time to clean that crap out of my gun i wouldve just used the manual but the mice threw a party and the manual was the confetti so had to watch a video Thanks your video was my step by step guide to disassembley and reassembly gun seems to function normally now Thank you again sir

When it comes to cleaning the new gun to get the packing grease off do you clean it the same as after shooting it ? Or would there be a different method
I like to now use a solvent for that first clean followed by a good gun oil. Otherwise, after that first clean you can continue to do the same or use a 3 in one but I prefer Aegis gun care cleaning products.
I did the cleaning and everything and dry fired the way you did at the end. However, it was kinda hard to pull back the action slide after dry firing without any rounds or ammo inside the chamber. When I cycle the action slide (forend) with the bolt/action release it is very easy to pull and push it forward. Is it normal for an action slide to be harder to pull back when dry firing without ammo? Thank you, and yes everything else on my maverick 88 functions perfect after taking apart and lubricating it brand new.
Just to be safe if you may want to go through the disassembly reassembly process one more time I know that seems a little ridiculous, but you never know something to be obvious just a little tiny bit
I just finished cleaning my new Maverick 88 with your video in front of me. Piece of cake.....well almost. It took me forever to get the trigger assembly to go back in. Seemed like something was catching but I never could figure it out. Fortunately it finally went back in. Do you know what could have been the problem?
It could’ve been that the hammer wasn’t caulked back when you’re trying to put it in that could be causing a possibility. Otherwise you just have to kind of wedged in the front locking in the back.
Thank you Travis for your quick reply. I have watched about 5 videos on the Moss Mav 88 reassembly and all of them show the trigger ass going right in. In my case yes the trigger was cocked so could the problem have been where the bolt was situated? I kept moving the bolt back and forth until it finally went in allbeit still with some mild force. I'd love to hear your opinion. Thanks
Hi Travis.. question: would you have another video available showing how to disassemble the boat carrier I noticed during the cleaning process that both firing pin spring and extractor springs were rusty looking I ordered the parts from Mossberg so if you haven’t have any additional information would be greatly appreciated. 1. Clean out the barrel and add rust protector. Baby oil (parrafin) is good.. 2. Spray some dry lube in the bottom of the receiver. 3.Wipe off the excess. Job done in less than 4 minutes.

@@sgtjarhead99 sometimes those are soldered on you can’t get them off easy other times there’s a screwed that keeps them in place. Honestly can’t tell you about this shotgun.

Can I use hoppes #9 as the lubricating oil instead of the clenzoil? Are you using CLP on all the parts first and then following up with your lubricant?

I'm looking to replace the forend with something closer to the mossberg 500 stuff so i can install the streamlight racker and to do that you need the mossberg 500 action bar assembly.....ok so my question is, do you have to remove the bolt and all the metal pieces inside in order to remove the forend or can it be done after just removing the barrel? Nah, I clean the Trigger group and interior parts with paint thinner and a tooth brush, I let it dry,.... and use singer Sewing machine oil on it because it's way cheaper. And on the barrel I use Hoppe's or Outers powder solvent or Nitro solvent. I use a Mop and a piece of tee-shirt I wet the tee-shirt with solvent and put it over the mop and run it in and out 3-4 times. I let it soak and let it soak. Then I run the brush through 3 times. Then I wet another patch with paint thinner until its clean and the final passes I wet the patch with singer sewing machine oil and put the patch and run it in and out 5or 6 times assemble the gun and wipe it down with singer sewing machine oil and your done. I never use the jag?
Hey everyone! Quick question, I bought the Maverick 88 cruiser two days ago and am having an issue I never had with any weapon I own. With the barrel on this shotgun won’t fully pump forward and lock there (thought it will without the barrel on, making it essentially useless at its current state. Any idea why it’s doing this?
It sounds like maybe the barrel isn't 100% re seated in the receiver or maybe one of the bars that locks into the bolt came out. Possibly the shotshell follower popped out on one side. Try a dissassmbly and reassembly and see what happens. The bolt is a bit of a pain to get back in there.
First time gun owner: Q. I'm probably being overly cautious but I can't get a shell into the magazine (20 gauge) it only goes about 3/4 of the way. I don't want to force it what am I doing wrong?

I will definitely recommend you get the Magpul stock! 👍 that was the last upgrade I bought for it and hands down probably the best one.

A shotgun can be a little bit intimidating initially if you’re not used to them when it comes to their cleaning
I just finished cleaning my new Maverick 88 with your video in front of me. Piece of cake.....well almost. It took me forever to get the trigger assembly to go back in. Seemed like something was catching but I never could figure it out. Fortunately it finally went back in. Do you know what could have been the problem?

It could’ve been that the hammer wasn’t caulked back when you’re trying to put it in that could be causing a possibility. Otherwise you just have to kind of wedged in the front locking in the back.
Thank you Travis for your quick reply. I have watched about 5 videos on the Moss Mav 88 reassembly and all of them show the trigger ass going right in. In my case yes the trigger was cocked so could the problem have been where the bolt was situated? I kept moving the bolt back and forth until it finally went in allbeit still with some mild force. I'd love to hear your opinion. Thanks

Hi Travis.. question: would you have another video available showing how to disassemble the boat carrier I noticed during the cleaning process that both firing pin spring and extractor springs were rusty looking I ordered the parts from Mossberg so if you haven’t have any additional information would be greatly appreciated. 1. Clean out the barrel and add rust protector. Baby oil (parrafin) is good.. 2. Spray some dry lube in the bottom of the receiver. 3.Wipe off the excess. Job done in less than 4 minutes.

Just future note, I was new doing this and it was hard to see how some of the internal parts were lined up while reassembling. Would be better if you showed the parts to the camera more slowly

The only area of my M88 I can't clean is the interior of the mag tube. Is there a trick to getting it off?
@@sgtjarhead99 sometimes those are soldered on you can’t get them off easy other times there’s a screwed that keeps them in place. Honestly can’t tell you about this shotgun.
I should clean mine some day.
Not my favorite to clean but the second time was much easier.
@@travisp11just got my maverick 88 ran maybe 20 rounds thru fixing to do a full breakdown and clean just to learn something!! Just learned how to clean my edc 9mm I’m a new gun owner I’m only 21. Definitely plan on keeping my firearms clean .

I just ordered this model. Is it a good idea to do this before I fire it for the 1st time?
I would. Get the factory grime and grease out of it before you shoot it. This will also ensure that there are no issues inside.
Can I use hoppes #9 as the lubricating oil instead of the clenzoil? Are you using CLP on all the parts first and then following up with your lubricant?
I have since switched to Aegis Gun Care products but you can do a coat of CLP or a coat of Clenzoil, wipe it off and then re apply and you are done.

Hi. New maverick 88 security owner here. Fantastic video. I'm looking to replace the forend with something closer to the mossberg 500 stuff so i can install the streamlight racker and to do that you need the mossberg 500 action bar assembly.....ok so my question is, do you have to remove the bolt and all the metal pieces inside in order to remove the forend or can it be done after just removing the barrel? Thanks for your time. And your video will be saving me some cuss words and aggravation. Thanks again.
The bolt connects to the arms on the forend so it’s basically a full disassembly.

Nah, I clean the Trigger group and interior parts with paint thinner and a tooth brush, I let it dry,.... and use singer Sewing machine oil on it because it's way cheaper.
And on the barrel I use Hoppe's or Outers powder solvent or Nitro solvent.
I use a Mop and a piece of tee-shirt I wet the tee-shirt with solvent and put it over the mop and run it in and out 3-4 times.
I let it soak and let it soak.
Then I run the brush through 3 times.
Then I wet another patch with paint thinner until its clean and the final passes I wet the patch with singer sewing machine oil and put the patch and run it in and out 5or 6 times assemble the gun and wipe it down with singer sewing machine oil and your done.
I never use the jag?
Drink every time he says "set that off to the side"
I prefer “just a drop of oil or two”

If you look up a parts diagram on the Maverick 88 you should be able to see where that part rests in the trigger pack.

Hey everyone! Quick question, I bought the Maverick 88 cruiser two days ago and am having an issue I never had with any weapon I own. With the barrel on this shotgun won’t fully pump forward and lock there (thought it will without the barrel on, making it essentially useless at its current state. Any idea why it’s doing this?
It sounds like maybe the barrel isn't 100% re seated in the receiver or maybe one of the bars that locks into the bolt came out. Possibly the shotshell follower popped out on one side. Try a dissassmbly and reassembly and see what happens. The bolt is a bit of a pain to get back in there.

First time gun owner: Q. I'm probably being overly cautious but I can't get a shell into the magazine (20 gauge) it only goes about 3/4 of the way. I don't want to force it what am I doing wrong?
I would take off the magazine tube end cap, the spring, the stopper. It’s possible there is a shell limiter in the mag tube

I believe I shot it before I cleaned it. I would have wiped it off after getting back from the range but nothing was cleaned until I made this video.
i sure hope that pin doesn't come out on it's own. kind of scary to think it's just that pin really that keeps me in the game
