What a genius! Apparently, the judges (?) decided that because he didn't use the "accepted" fingering techniques that he was "not worthy" of anything but 4th place. Amazingly, few remember the winner but this young man is taking the musical world by storm....so much for the technocrats! He is truly amazing and exciting to hear!
@@ethansaltmere I rather like the comparative (not complete) lack of legato; makes for a clearer and more interestingly followable musical performance than most. Usually in Liszt the form and argument are not the chief things heard.
David Moran finally a comment from someone who knows at least something about piano playing. Sound quality is one of the chief wonders of the art of piano performance and the difference in sound different artists can male with the same instrument. Take Volodos and Horowitz for example
And the way the cellist nods back(this kid wants to make MUSIC, okay!). It was probably unusual for him, but he knew what it was about and could return the gesture.
Judges definitely underrated him. There is a magnetism, a charisma that comes through in his playing that can't be denied. Remember the judges in these competitions are often old, conservative and jealous.
The russian judjes "loved et supported" him - but some other ones wanted tu push down - said Boris Bezerovski. He said also that Lucas Debargue was a genius...
Lucas, your interpretation here is a spiritual event. Years on, and it still continues shining with so much love and grace, just like Venus in the morning sky in February.
I remember about those Tch 15 International Tchaïkowsky Competitions in Moscow as It was yesturday where Lucas Debargue🇨🇵 won the 4 th price 👑 the best event of whole my life during 3 weeks 🎶🌹🌻
Just listened once again and I'm more convinced than ever that Lucas should have won. The sensitivity in the opening is tear-evoking in its beauty and elegance.
I love the way Debargue plays along with the orchestral interlude when the main theme transforms into a march ... It heightens the true sense of triumph Liszt longed to convey 😂
What do you do when you're playing an impossibly difficult piano passage, written by Liszt no less, and the orchestra gets ahead of you? Why you just play the impossibly difficult passage faster! At least that's what Lucas Debargue does in such scary situations, like 11:36 And notice at the double glissandi at 11:23 he uses only one hand (no, he doesn't do them in a single octave, though that'd be a neat Weberian trick). There really should have been platinum, gold, silver, and bronze this competition because really there were FOUR winners. From the looks of things, however it will be Debargue pushing the three very able medal winners into the shadows because of his spectacular playing combined with that novel, James Bond-like surreal early life he had...playing piano by ear as a beginner at 11, giving it up to become a bagboy at a supermarket, then resuming it at 20, combining serious study with honing excellent jazz piano skills, to place 4th at the most prestigious competition in the world four years later and only because, as someone who was a fly on the wall during jury deliberations, he played scales using only his thumb and index fingers. Apparently such techniques are beneath an artist of quality. Whaaaa...? Want to hear a "dream gig"? Debargue and Matsuev, who is the most incredible jazz pianist since Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum, together on stage doing sets. I'd pay all $2.49 in my bank account to watch that. Hey, why looking so disparaged? You never heard of the Widow's Mite?
Actually, he never was a bagboy (there are no bagboys in France), he was just part of a band, playing bass while he was in highschool. But he is a great musician, I had the chance to hear him last saturday in Compiègne, the city where he grew up.
Molto coinvolgente !
obviously great Pianist. The reason why he got 4th place might be that he did some mistakes and others can do it "without any mistakes"- obviously thats wrong. I think he Shows the Impressionist side of Liszt with his 2. piano concerto. i heard his Gaspard de la nuit by Ravel i really like the sensitivity in his fingers!
I always think the biggest challenge of any musical performance especially piano is to not play the wrong note lol It's still a miracle to me that these guys are playing so many notes for such a long time and a little disturbance could have caused them to play the wrong note and then the next wrong note ...
And why the need to be racist/stereotyping? There are plenty of amazing Asian musicians - no need to put them down just to express acknowledgement for Debargue.
What is all the fuss about? Technically spotty, brittle tone, rhythmically unstable. One expects a nearly professional level from a Tchaikovsky finalist but this is not even close.
Bear in mind that was the first time he played with an orchestra ! It's just incredible !
superb
Debargue doesn't even need the conductor. Look at that eye contact, the genuine connection, he is so awesome!

probably partly to due with the very nasal sound he produces and complete lack of legato. It's all too percussive
@@ethansaltmere Nasal sound at the piano? This level of pretentiousness should hurt.
@@ethansaltmere He is not a singer and your comment is ridiculous...

Sometimes a genius energy is filling this world. Lucas Dubargue is spreading musical resonance to the world. Brilliant!
Nobel peace prize for LD!
The way he looks at the cellist at the start.....you can really tell the music resonates within him so deeply. Such a beautiful and poignant pianist.
And the way the cellist nods back(this kid wants to make MUSIC, okay!). It was probably unusual for him, but he knew what it was about and could return the gesture.
YEAH that's exactly what I thought !

By the way,
Soloist not supposed to watch the orchestra or accompanist all the time, it's considered unprofessional
@@ShaolinChan5988 who cares whats he ‘supposed’ to do
The celliest is my teacher Paul !!!!!!!!

He is truly amazing, a genius, and much better than the winner, who obviously won because is Russian.
They are old liberal not conservative.
He deserved to lose because of that mustache so 🤷♂
The Moscow audience was delighted with him, it seems that they did not notice other performers

Lucas is nothing short of spectacular! Extraordinary musician!
Achingly beautiful.
Gotta love his playing!

Bagboy ???? "there are no bagboys in France" ? Can you explain this word "bagboy" please :-)
"Garcon de bague".
ça ne veut rien dire en français ou alors c'est un jeu de mot avec "Debargue" - "de Bague" mais ça n'a aucun sens - tant pis... laisse tomber.
Debargue is a genius
He is awesome
Wow! This guy is incredible! I feel like a nobody at the piano now.
It was the most important event of my life and what wonderful and unforgettable memories too !
Fabulous Lucas. Bravo. 🌷🌷🌷 (Les Pays Bas)
that conductor with the orchestra was incredible

I love it, give me more of that sweet Lucas Debargue
Una musicalidad impresionante!
Émotion quand tu nous tiens........Thank you and long life
Gorgeous hands!
Oui, des mains et un doigté exceptionnels !
I LOVE THIS MAN
Lucas is magnificent! Thank you Valery Gergiev for recognizing this, in spite of the rigged voting which gave a much lesser pianist 1st prize.
The most sensitive musician of the times!
Genius.

He' s absolutely unique
Mr. Debargue, when are you going to play like that again? Where has your inspiration gone?
Who is the cellist at the begginig?
The cellist is my teacher paul Suss and I love him!
When I listened to him then, it seemed, that I can distinguish between mezzo-forte and mezzo-piano
Peter Donohoe is sleeping:( Do pianists become immune to other pianists and their amazing creation of music?

😂😂😂
The judges relegating him to last place betrayed their own technical incompetence and jealousy!!!!
piano concerts usually bore me but that was like music making love to me
Is he better than George Li?
Self taught? Amazing
Yes so was richter and he was one of the best
He is not self taught. He spend many years with professional classical pianist teacher. Now he is part of university where he is studying.
@@MegaPianogenius He's not "self-taught", and neither was Richter. 🙄
What is funny is that Debargue is having more success than Geniusas, Masleev, George Li and the others...
