  • When you think of Olive Garden, the first menu item you probably think of is breadsticks. The two just go hand in hand. But what springs to mind next? A pasta dish, perhaps? Soup? For lots of customers, it's salad. With its blend of vegetables and rich Italian dressing, it's inspired praise from critics and even a copycat recipe from the Food Network.
That said, next time you head to your favorite chain restaurant where you're family, you may want to skip the salad altogether. Why? Someone who claims to have once been an employee explained that you have no idea what you're getting. Watch as an employee reveals why you should avoid Olive Garden salads.

Why go to a chain restaurant where the food is the same in New York as it is in Oregon? Go to a locally owned restaurant where the food is fresh and tastes better.

I work at an Olive Garden, and never have I seen anyone eat out of the salad toppings, (why would you randomly pop an onion slice into your mouth?). Most of us wash our hands pretty often, especially after scraping plates, we are allowed to carry sanitizing wipes, the salads are kept in the fridge, where they go, and there isn’t even a microwave in the Olive Garden I work at.

When you go again take home some breadsticks and make some croutons from it and add to your salad you would love it. Also there is no canned chicken she is lying. And they wash their hands with sanitizing soap in the sink right by the salad station it is all very hygienic. They are just disgruntled and not telling the truth

I've never got sick from eating at an Olive Garden in Los Angeles. Sounds like a mismanagement at certain locations from this video. The restaurants I've been to don't have a salad bar so maybe that's why. Most of their food is probably frozen but I've never had a bad meal from there. It's a great place to meet with your co-workers for lunch hour at least.

Wow - no restaurant that began in the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s creates their food the same now. Wendy’s no longer has fresh meat delivered daily with the opening employee making sure enough patties are pressed for the day - Pizza Hut no longer makes the dough fresh daily - McDonald’s no longer cuts anything fresh - Olive Garden once made fresh pasta for the public to see while waiting for a table. The list grows but if these people did as they claim then they should be ashamed of themselves because I worked at an OG for over 5 years and we had the best staff and management team I ever worked with. Our restaurant had people who cared about the restaurant and the customers. So SHAME on you nasty people who didn’t bother to wash your hands because wipes were taken from you!! Grow up!

That's the case in most big chain restaurants. They need to keep food consistent from location to location, so it's not uncommon for food to be prepared in an off-site distribution center, shipped out, then reheated at at the individual restaurants.

Olive Garden is a chain restaurant. And, in order to maintain food consistency across all of their restaurants, the food will arrive frozen and just needs to be reheated in the microwave or briefly sautéed. This is the case for most chains and really isn’t a surprise. As for the other issues, they are specific to that particular restaurant and honestly sound like managerial issues. Like, why are you allowing your employees to pick off of the salads?!?

Coming from the Boston area, there is no excuse whatsoever to go to Olive Garden, Pizza Hut, Subway, Chick Fil A, Long John Silver"s or 5 Guys. There are an overwhelming number of Mom and Pops, that are far better, and much cheaper. But far better seals the deal. And no doubt in NYC, Philadelphia, and Chicago it's the same. But this is for you, in the suburbs and sticks of flyover states. If you go, you deserve it.

    • @frankyu553

This happens to ALL chain restaurants when BEAN counters get involved. Old Chicago has folded and came back and folded again. Part of this is that the management refuses to keep GOOD cooks on their payroll. They will hire these damn kids to cook and then quit when they get their first couple of paychecks. That's why it's inconsistent. Pay cooks well and they'll work for you for 10-20yrs and the food will be much better. I remember when Olive Garden, Applebees, most of the others were great. There prices were even cheaper and it tasted better. Now they jack up the price and the food tastes like shit. That's why I prefer mom & pop shops. Their more concerned with quality and taste of the food then, KEEPING IT MODERN or UP TO DATE. Red Robin used to be a killer burger joint, now it's shit. Thanx bean counters.

Allowing the employees to pick toppings out of the salad would be more a kitchen manager issue by not yelling at and writing up said employees. The same would go with their cleaning procedures, regardless of what corporate brought down, a manager that’s a good one would make sure their kitchen would run in tip top shape to help keep it clean & healthier for their particular customers.
And even if you think a non-franchised place would be better, as Gordon Ramsey has shown, it’s STILL in the hands of the managers and head chefs to have a great place!
Bottom line is, you do take some risks wherever you go, if you’re not cleaning & preparing the food yourself!

Unless this Girl can provide me proof with some cell phone photo's of slugs in the soda machine, and employees picking at the Salad Toppings, and Photos of Microwaves being used at the OG she worked, I have no way to know how often these things did or did nor occur. Did she ever call the Health Department and have the OG she worked in inspected by them? That would be the first thing she should have done, before commenting on this Video.

This is a hit piece on Olive Garden based on disgruntled staff. Take it with a grain of salt.

If people only knew what went on in the back of restaurants... if you whine about your food being late, chances are even if it falls on the floor, you're gonna get it ASAP just to shut you up. I worked in a steakhouse and was pulled aside and told I wasted too much time washing my hands because if I cleared a table and gathered dirty silverware, I'd wash my hands before handling clean cups, plates, etc... Chain restaurants ONLY care about profit. Locally owned places often genuinely care where chain restaurants are more concerned with not getting hassled by corporate.

Disclaimer: I never worked at an Olive Garden, but several chain pizza restaurants, a steakhouse, sub restaurant, and two coffee shops (jerks will often get unwanted decaf).
