Slovenian here. It is rare to hear my country mentioned in international affairs like this. We tend to think about ourselves as small, unimportant nation that most of the world does not even know that we exist and many are even mixing us with Slovakia. When our police captured Russian spies we thought they were some unimportant small fishes. After all, what would they do in such a small, and relatively unimportant nation. In the last few days a lot of details leaked into media and it became clear that the role of these two spies that they captured was a lot more important than we thought. It was quite a big shock.

It's a shame because it looks like Navalny was originally intended to be exchanged in this deal, but Putin changed his mind and decided to off him instead

Vlad, you see deep and true! God Bless You! I have a brother and nephew who independently discovered your genius. I adhere to the teaching of one of my favorite spiritual teachers: "Humility is conformity with the truth." In that context, when you have been granted such obvious, innate and yet obviously cultivated intellectual prowess, this is a charism - a gift given to you for the benefit of others. My brother, my nephew, myself and 87K others bask in that charism, that benefit to your beloved beautiful community. I truly hope you accept your gift and proceed to complete healing as a result. Such aspiration is not arrogance, it is, indeed, humility.
I'm old enough to remember the Cold War and the prisoners for hostages exchange hit me with a bit of de ja vu. Perhaps it might serve as a reminder to many of the seriousness of international relations these days by drawing clear lines exposing might makers from right makers.
Speaking of age..... It makes me feel old to find that many people are surprised to find that Soviet Studies (under a variety of names) used to be an actual undergraduate college major.
Kara-Murza's immediate comments regarding lifting Russian sanctions are deeply disappointing. One of the more prominent oppositional figures, freed by massive diplomatic effort, chooses in his first comments, to argue a line the Kremlin has been pushing, with no regard to the boon lifting sanctions would give to Russia's offensive war. The Russian opposition's soul died with Nemtsov.
@AstralLice83 yes their messaging will always be directed towards Russian citizens, and that is understandable. I do not think it is acceptable, however, that one of the very first statements they have made after having been released by the west is precisely the Kremlin's ask of the West - get rid of the sanctions.
What the fuck did you expect? How can you not see that there's no liberalism in russia? there's no reason in those people, they're unable to not be slaves
Was JUST asking about that under another video. Probably even after this was recorded. But my questions are answered anyways. Especially the ethics part. Im still not sure where my own feelings are is, but that helped. Other sources I follow tend to break it down to a trolley problem and then compare "value" of people. This was more nuanced, which is why im here in the first place.
Vlad, been waching your videos and analysis for a while, but never commented. Maybe a bit outside of your normal purview, but I would love to know what do you think about the situation in Venezuela and the role of other Latin American countries like Maduro's (former?) allies like Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Do you see a path for democracy or is it just a regime becoming even less open than before? Huge thanks for all that you help us understand the crisis of democracy on your channels here from Brazil.
The problem with Venezuela is that: Maduro's regime has absolutely no incentive to leave out. And it includes every and each person of the hardcore group in power. Militaries, high rank one, are for 20 years on it, invested in it. How to convince any of them to simply leave the power? Is it possible to even imagine all the high rank militaries (invested in, including murders and tortures, and a relation with narco for personal gains) just departure out? Why they would do that? Is it possible to Imagine that half of militaries will stay while other half leave together with Maduro? The problem is: People in power around Maduro is so much invested, for so long, that the capacity of IMAGINE a change is not there. Opposition has 60-68% of support by now, but they have absolute NO DIALOGUE in military (high ranks). What it means for Brazil and Colombia? Brazil and Colombia, either they being conscious or no, they have no real power to incidence Venezuela. Of course, they will try, Maduro's regime will bullshit here and there, EXACLTLY how it has being happening. The only country with real influence in Venezuela is China and Russia, but of course, they have NO INCENTIVE to not support Maduro. Maduro regine, due all of incentives on the table, is ready and willing to become a Rougue state, a Paria, just like Nicaragua. Because they know that they doing have have a REAL SAFE way out, just because they already stepped themselves too deep in their own shit. Unfortunately, I don't see an escape for Venezuelan people. Millions of them will be willing to leave Venezuela again, on another largest immigration crises in the world again. And this is because their hope, or, last hope, are in this elections. Once they feel and realize there is no way, they will leave again Venezuela. Sad.
Ukraine is constantly and consistently proposing political solutions, as witnessed by the recent Peace conference in Switzerland and renewed initiatives by Zelensky and his government to invite Russia to the peace table.
Does anyone in the Russian space (geographical or intellectual) have any strategy for a future Russian political structure (not counting preserving the status quo)?
Getting rid of Putin necessitates getting rid of the entire power structure of the FSB, SVR, Rosgvardia, the oligarchs, etc. We are talking millions of people with heavy incentives to maintain the status quo. What's more, they are also the only one with the power to enforce their will on the masses. The opposition is a tiny, tiny fractious group that appeals to what they falsely perceive as Russia - the Pete/Moscow educated elite. There is no way to topple the regime from within. As for future vision - yes, Navalny did come out with his vision of a "beautiful russia of the future" (if my memory is correct). Somehow, all the corruption is magically gone with Putin and henchmen (something we struggle with in eastern europe 40 years post-communist), and Russia becomes a shining beacon of civilisation in the region, reigniting a modern version of the "friendship of the soviet peoples" - neo-Russian empire, basically. In other words - no.

Vlad, what if West's strategy towards Russia and Ukraine is this? Slow deterioration of Russia with Ukraine in the middle, serving as a boiler. It's difficult to have an open strategy that says this though and therefore we are quiet about it. Maybe?
I think the Dems could smell that was his only way to define her before she identified herself without using race or misogyny (which is back in full force). They pre-empted that descriptor and JD Vance fit the bill with his odd musings. Also, anyone who has seen Trump on the road can immediately recognize the accordion hands, the tangents about toilets, windmills, various famous dead people who liked him, and sharks as indeed weird things to obsess about. It sells better than the danger to democracy line (which allies like LP can carry leaving her message undiluted).
Deplorables, racists, bitter clingers, extremists, literally hitler, threat to democracy, cult... And you lunatics think calling us 'weird' is somehow going to work? 😂 🤡
He just understood that Trump is gonna lose and tries to avoid total isolation from the Harris administration. Btw I think Harris would not negotiate with him in any circumstances. I think White House finally understood how to deal with Putin. You have to make him invent new ways to win your favor but never give him what he wants.
Vlad, I implore the community to watch this short video on radio free europe/radio liberty titled; _Russian Convicted Murderer Freed In U.S. - Russia Prisoner Swap, Widow Of His Victim Shocked_ I'm so disgusted and outraged at how politicians can treat ordinary people like this! J'accuse Scholz, the lily-livered coward!
Indeed. While I can see releasing the spies, releasing the assassin is just. Outrageous. From my understanding, the main opposition came from Baerbock, who relented only when Biden personally asked.
Trump’s not likely to be very hard or very soft on Russia. The advantage for Russia is he’s more likely to bear a grudge and wants to make Zelensky’s life difficult. He won’t see that as threatening democracy as he partly see’s Zelensky through his own experience of self-interest in power.
Wow. That's a take 😅 There is a minute inferisimal nugget of accuracy in this but not enough to form the bigger picture regarding Zelensky. This is focusing too much on the little things.
I don't think Trump has a reason to harbor a grudge against Zelensky. It's possible he won't see it that way, as many others don't, but Zelensky was very neutral and not instrumental in the impeachment matter. That was one of the weakest parts of the Democrats' case -- when they asked the target of the alleged coercion to confirm that it was coercion, he said he didn't interpret it that way and didn't want to be involved in the politics one way or the other. If he had chosen to help the Democrats, it's likely their case would've been much stronger, so although he didn't help Trump either, by strongly refuting the allegation, I would say that his feelings toward Zelensky should be ambivalent at worst.
trump has explicitly said he's 'not a fan of sanctions' (of course, only in regards to Russia) so you can miss me with this idea that he won't be criminally soft on Russia.
You say that there is no greater Western strategy, but I'm not sure you are correct . I believe it is to force stagnation or deterioration of Russian military and economy so that Putin's successor is more inclined to abandon his greater project than continue it, and blame everything on him. Whether that takes 3, 5 or 10 years is speculative, but his age does put a foreseeable cap on his reign. Whether or not, this is a good policy I cannot say, but it does give rationality to current Western actions, from their perspective.
Too? I think it bears conversation that the people freed might feel loss and guilt over them processing who their freedom allowed to be released again in the exchange.
Besides gaining the perception of negotiability, Putin released speakers who, in their first public appearances, started calling for lifting economic sanctions, reducing pressure on Russia, and negotiating with Putin. In other words, Putin got his message out through them. In Russian we call this агенты влияния.
Some Ukrainians obviously do. But even though I (a US citizens) completely support helping Ukraine for as long as it takes, I stand by the fact that I admire Alexei Navalny deeply and consider him one of my heroes. I have since I became one of his American fans in 2018 or so. As for the mistakes he made? I put those in the same category as Abraham Lincoln having favored the "back to Africa" solution to slavery at one point, or Gandhi being a pervert and a racist. Lincoln ranks above Navalny on my personal list of heroes but Gandhi isn't on that list at all. (Nehru is).

Also there were another projects, they argue with each other, but show main solutions: real federalism, separation of powers, lustrations for the accomplices of the regime etc.
I admit I was disappointed about who wasn't included in the exchange. That was a massive political message in itself: The majority of those exchanged are not from ethnic minorities and do not represent ethnic minorities inside russia - their rights, regions, or their politics. So morally right? More like morally limited in my opinion. At the same time I was very glad that Kara Murza was included. And excellent to see radio free Europe's journalist freed - especially since she is ethnic Tatar - no doubt the only reason she was included is because she also has US citizenship. Also - the German kid - literally a minor when he was arrested and thrown in jail after he tried to leave russia and was detained at the border - especially glad he was included.
@@eruno_ Meh. Thanks for sharing you have zero understanding of my comment - and definitely very little understanding of who is persecuted and imprisoned in russia - or why thousands are imprisoned. Not freeing any of the multitude of social or political activists from the regions - advocates for languages and the right of their culture to exist - but making sure to free the Navalny group IS certainly a political statement.
@@estelleaustin9205 you really need to get of your moral high horse, as someone who can actually speak Russian I agree that minorities aren't exempt from being targeted by Putinist regime. But people freed were all very well known internationally and are not comparable to some local dissidents in North Caucasus etc. There is a degree of importance and currently Russian opposition figures with the highest amount of Russian and international support - aka highest legitimacy are the likes of Yashin and Kara-Murza. Boiling everything down to ethnicity isn't productive and only further harms liberal opposition movement by fracturing it. Navalny and his team are heroes and are considered as such for a good reason. They managed to show Russia that Putin isn't god and that mass mobilizations for free Russia can be a reality.
Question: who poses a threat to us, the free world, that we released in the exchange? And why did Putin want his fav assassin released so badly? Does he have new assignments ready for this murderer? that does worry me, as does the hackers
The poignancy of the epic quote "All the world's a stage and all the [people] merely players" rings ever truer to me. Politics to me seems to be increasingly little more than a necessary kind of theatre.
@Shaft0 I meant politics in isolation, not the results of political decisions although that said if one was detached enough, it is arguably all of a form of theatre to somebody. And yep, it's that international poker table again...
Nope, politics is much broader than a game. Now, the parts you care to not be, are incessantly being prosecuted that way. But politics itself is quite broad.

We wouldn't be us if we didn't try to get our people back, we would be them, so I don't see a moral problem this time. But since we also have a responsibility to behave sensibly ourselves it should be clear to anyone going to Russia (and similar states) that from here on in they do so at their own risk.
I see this deal as a loss for the west. And weigh it's morality not only between "it's morally right to save our people" vs "It harms our security by releasing those criminals"... I see the long term drawback of encouraging Russia to kidnap western citizens to be used as bargaining chips. Is it moral to subject our citizens to further kidnappings? it all will repeat in a circle time and time again, unless we break it. But the only way to break it is to say "Two can play this game" and imprison Russians in the west for trade. Is it moral? No. Does it go against all our values? Yes. And that's why Kremlin regime will keep using this method against us. Because it can not fail. They weaponized our morality against us.
That is a fantastic result of a prisoner exchange, where Russia and the United States agreed to exchange hostages from each other's client states. This is not a geopolitical concession by either power to its respective client state, but rather a confirmation of those states' client status. These negotiations happened between Moscow and Washington, not between Minsk and Berlin, and not between Washington and Berlin on the one hand nor Minsk and Moscow on the other.
It's said that our foreign minister was not happy about the whole thing. But we got five hostages returned, one of them was the youngest ever imprisoned for high treason in Russia, a then 17 year old from my area, who was severely beaten up in prison and feared to be killed there.
Good points. Must take what you like and reject what you don’t. There are good and bad in every government type, just as there is good and bad in all nations of man. Not because they don’t try.
From here on forward, Mr. Putin's actions should be perceived as being centered around staying in power and keeping alive. Time works against him on both.
I watched some Russian immigrants in USA channels and read comments. Many Russians left USA and there's more who are planning to do so. They don't care about how their children feel about it, because the Russian parents consider their children also Russian, thus Russia is their home.
Vlad, you should discuss odds and probable events in Bayesian-terms. People understand Bayesian in a very intuitive way and you don't need to talk about a unique event in terms of multiple, repeating event, which does not really make sense. I understand your argument and agree with your probabilities. But you describe it in terms of Fischerian statistics. Bayesian stats are truly about what happened now but taking into account what we thought of the odds before the event happened. So we just update the odds recognizing that we saw something.
Thank you for your analysis. It is great to see people being returned. Obviously the cost is high. People in the reach of the russians are more at risk of being held hostage and their security needs to be considered. russian aggression and subterfuge on Western soil will also be facilitated by the apparent impunity with which their agents can operate knowing they can be traded and returned as national hero's. Mitigating these costs has to be something we hope our governments do other than basking in the the good public relations images.
Vlad did not weigh in the dire financial implications of the war in Ukraine for Russia, or the long term unsustainability of the war for the Russian economy. Russia appears to be ready to accept a tie with Ukraine. This means Russia keeping the Russian speaking territories of the Dombas that were occupied since 2014, and regarding Crimea a partition similar to the borders of Cypress with Turkey and Greece. Enforced by U.N. peacekeeping troops. Ukraine must be accepted into NATO with a road map to this solution. This would guarantee Ukraine that Russia would stay in their borders. Any other Russian proposals or U.S. initiated as the US$500 billion Trump (general Kellog) idea of an incentive for peace in Ukraine in exchange for land is naive, foolish and would unacceptable by the majority of Ukrainians.
A few thoughts: - Is there any broad consensus as to what constitutes a 'Russian speaking' area? Certainly Russia cannot be allowed to define it. - Anyone who does not wish to remain in Russia must be allowed to leave and be compensated by Russia for the land, fixtures, etc. they leave behind. - If Crimea is to be partitioned Ukraine's interests would outweigh Russia's - Under no circumstances would Putin be allowed to sweep this under the rug. There needs to be some mechanism by which the entire Russian population would be made aware that 1. Ukraine is the aggrieved party, not Russia and 2. Putin brought this upon Russia and that there was no actual threat or reason to invade Ukraine.
It was pretty clear why the russians did the deal now. taking krasikov off the table removes leverage from Germany over a future Trump admin. Now when trump comes in, he won't be asking Scholtz for a favour
Navalny was given the opportunity to not die in jail. His demise was a certainty after his return from Germany. This was understood by both Navalny and Putin.
@@armingleiner5292 those aren't necessarily distinct. It could be argued that it is in most if not all our interests to live in a society that values ethical principles (putting aside for a moment the difficulty in getting people to agree what those principles should be). The meaningful distinction then is between broad self interest v. narrow self interest. Think the prisoner's dilemma: it's good if everyone focuses on broad self interest. it's bad if everyone focuses on narrow self interest. But the kicker is, if some people focus on narrow self interest and some broad interest, that'll benefit those who focus on narrow self interest to the detriment of those who focus on broad self interest.
It's not just America. Politics is about power everywhere. Ethics is just something you wear to get it. You can't be ethical and become president of the US. An ethical person wouldn't even want the job given the path required to get there.

Thank you. I was eager to hear from you on this situation.
Hello Vlad, hope you are well! So nice to see you!
Nice to see you!
Vlad, you see deep and true! God Bless You!
I have a brother and nephew who independently discovered your genius.
I adhere to the teaching of one of my favorite spiritual teachers: "Humility is conformity with the truth."
In that context, when you have been granted such obvious, innate and yet obviously cultivated intellectual prowess, this is a charism - a gift given to you for the benefit of others. My brother, my nephew, myself and 87K others bask in that charism, that benefit to your beloved beautiful community.
I truly hope you accept your gift and proceed to complete healing as a result.
Such aspiration is not arrogance, it is, indeed, humility.
Thank you for your generous words and wishes.
Always nice to hear well thought-out analysis
Kara-Murza's immediate comments regarding lifting Russian sanctions are deeply disappointing. One of the more prominent oppositional figures, freed by massive diplomatic effort, chooses in his first comments, to argue a line the Kremlin has been pushing, with no regard to the boon lifting sanctions would give to Russia's offensive war.
The Russian opposition's soul died with Nemtsov.
Maybe cause Russian opposition need to care more about their own citizens? By the way Nemtsov also very pro-russian during his polotical career.
@AstralLice83 yes their messaging will always be directed towards Russian citizens, and that is understandable. I do not think it is acceptable, however, that one of the very first statements they have made after having been released by the west is precisely the Kremlin's ask of the West - get rid of the sanctions.
Nemtsov would say the same thing
What the fuck did you expect? How can you not see that there's no liberalism in russia? there's no reason in those people, they're unable to not be slaves

Was JUST asking about that under another video. Probably even after this was recorded. But my questions are answered anyways.
Especially the ethics part. Im still not sure where my own feelings are is, but that helped. Other sources I follow tend to break it down to a trolley problem and then compare "value" of people. This was more nuanced, which is why im here in the first place.

Sad.
We’ve been getting some very high-quality “kkhhello”s recently, and it’s appreciated!

Is it wise to allow blackmail in exchanging of prisoners as it might encourage more of this?
I asked this question just after the video was released but it was deleted?

Does anyone in the Russian space (geographical or intellectual) have any strategy for a future Russian political structure (not counting preserving the status quo)?
No.
No. they're incapable of something like that
Getting rid of Putin necessitates getting rid of the entire power structure of the FSB, SVR, Rosgvardia, the oligarchs, etc.

Maybe?
Speaking of intellectual taxi: would love to hear your thoughts on the "Republicans are weird" campaign. Seems like your kinda thing to comment on.
One thing authoritarians can't bear is being laughed at
Forces republicans to explain themselves which so far theyve taken the bait, unfortunately for them (🎉)
It is certainly a weird campaign.
Wow lol . What !?! That doesn't even make sense
Vlad, I implore the community to watch this short video on radio free europe/radio liberty titled;
_Russian Convicted Murderer Freed In U.S. - Russia Prisoner Swap, Widow Of His Victim Shocked_
I'm so disgusted and outraged at how politicians can treat ordinary people like this! J'accuse Scholz, the lily-livered coward!
Indeed. While I can see releasing the spies, releasing the assassin is just. Outrageous. From my understanding, the main opposition came from Baerbock, who relented only when Biden personally asked.
I think the most elegant political moment in U.S. history, will be when President Biden, hands over to President Harris.
Trump’s not likely to be very hard or very soft on Russia. The advantage for Russia is he’s more likely to bear a grudge and wants to make Zelensky’s life difficult. He won’t see that as threatening democracy as he partly see’s Zelensky through his own experience of self-interest in power.
What a nonsense. He is/was more involved in Russia than you think.
Trump deserves his chance at comeuppance
Wow. That's a take 😅
There is a minute inferisimal nugget of accuracy in this but not enough to form the bigger picture regarding Zelensky.
Hi Vlad, was waiting for your take on this and as always, great to see you.
Besides gaining the perception of negotiability, Putin released speakers who, in their first public appearances, started calling for lifting economic sanctions, reducing pressure on Russia, and negotiating with Putin. In other words, Putin got his message out through them. In Russian we call this агенты влияния.
Не тебе судить людей которых убивали в тюрьме, пустой ты человек
The saddest thing is that Alexei Navalny could not be saved!!!!😭😭😭😭
Navalny was hated by Ukrainians. So there no point to save him or smh.
Could it be that Putin is sending a message to Trump: If you want my support to win the election, you've got to make me some promises.
There is almost no discussion on spesifics among russian oposition, because general consensus on main points was reached already. There is a book called "How to slay a dragon" by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, it has a general outline for reforms.
Although for those of us who intently follow geopolitics, we know that Trump is a wildcard, but he tried and has said that he will pull the United States out of NATO, this would give Putin Ukraine and possibly a lot more. I think it's pretty clear who Trump would prefer.
Opposition does have deeply detailed plans of political, social, economical reconstruction of russian future, you just didn't ever read any of those programs. But your didn't read and any plan doesn't exist are not the same. This texts are available in publications, it's not a problem at all to find and read if you're really interested.
How would one begin the process of locating these documents?
@@ak5659 l don't know really. Maybe they are not available in English. But try to find Vladimir Milov's and Fiodor Krasheninnikov's "Yes, we can" - the detailed plan of normal future Russia.
I fail to see how ones ethnicity is of any relevance to this? Can you explain?
@@estelleaustin9205 Not everything has to be about race. performative wokeness right here.
@@eruno_ so in other words you agree that this is a political statement. As I said.

The poignancy of the epic quote "All the world's a stage and all the [people] merely players" rings ever truer to me. Politics to me seems to be increasingly little more than a necessary kind of theatre.
People's life or death is not theatre. Politics is about power. The world is a poker game, and everyone cheats.
@Shaft0 I meant politics in isolation, not the results of political decisions although that said if one was detached enough, it is arguably all of a form of theatre to somebody. And yep, it's that international poker table again...

So we just update the odds recognizing that we saw something.
hey Vlad could you pls qualify some of your statements, like why do you think "putin is believing x" etc
Word
Thank you for your analysis. It is great to see people being returned. Obviously the cost is high. People in the reach of the russians are more at risk of being held hostage and their security needs to be considered. russian aggression and subterfuge on Western soil will also be facilitated by the apparent impunity with which their agents can operate knowing they can be traded and returned as national hero's. Mitigating these costs has to be something we hope our governments do other than basking in the the good public relations images.
Why have they got hostages 😡
A few thoughts:
- Is there any broad consensus as to what constitutes a 'Russian speaking' area? Certainly Russia cannot be allowed to define it.
- Anyone who does not wish to remain in Russia must be allowed to leave and be compensated by Russia for the land, fixtures, etc. they leave behind.
- If Crimea is to be partitioned Ukraine's interests would outweigh Russia's
- Under no circumstances would Putin be allowed to sweep this under the rug.
The US does not ask Germany for favours.
Navalny was given the opportunity to not die in jail. His demise was a certainty after his return from Germany. This was understood by both Navalny and Putin.

In America politics has nothing to do with ethics. Perhaps we can change that but it's going to be a struggle.
Politics RARELY has anything to do with ethics anywhere
Politics shouldnt have so much to do with ethics.
It is first and foremost about interests.
Politics is about power. Including cheating. You cannot put the toothpaste back in once it's out.

Dear PM,
I can't help noticing these riots followed a change in government, much like the riots of 2011, followed a year of new government.
So it appears a lot of people aren't happy government has moved 'left of.'
Government inevitably will sway from right to left (and vice versa.) 'Left of' government supporting 'men,' the rioters might be considered childlike or men acting like women, but they are not behaving like men. Right of government supporting 'women and children.'
To support both genders, government sways left to right to left to right etc.
Men are based on the Higher Power and Intelligence who's character is Love, who use religion (which gives some degree of freedom from the Higher Power creating atheists.) Religion moves men right of. The rioters are making use of our naturally religious character and culture. Women and children are based on the character of the 'No rules,' Universe, that 'men,' are supposed to guide, not behave like.
Let us hope the riots don't result in civil war, joining the Russian war, who maywell be behind the riots, and a return to the right of government without left of government being in power a year.
