The paper strips tied on the tree branches are Omikuji (おみくじ), the fortune telling sold by shrines, not the ones you write down your wishes. People leave the undesirable Omikuji at the shrines behind like that way.

I developed a deeper understanding of animism through self learning of
the Japanese language & the encompassing culture, belief systems,
etc. The inspiration for this was my growing love of Music from, not
only Japan, but all of East Asia. Oddly enough, this coincided with the History Channel series 'Ancient Aliens'.
FYI Born and raised Roman Catholic, parents of Pomerania. Hence, 'Idol worship' was not uncommon. i.e. the Virgin Mary & Pope John Paul II, etc. Those items or areas, that were blessed by..., or visited by... , were indeed perceived to have 'spiritual' powers (perhaps similar to the Blarney Stone). But even more significant, was holding 'near & dear' objects from a deceased members of the family, and thereby experiencing...
Once again I think it goes back to Shinto, where reverence for Family & Nature is only 2/3 of ... future existence (No Sun... no son... no Life). 'Relatively' equivalent to Many other systems of Belief, but without the 'Big Books' of conduct dictating 'every thought, action, & plan'. The truth is Many need such 'guidance'.

Shintoism is very similar to Ifa and other traditional African Belief systems. I love how the majority of Japanese still respect and uphold their traditional belief systems.

Gratitude & Respect for Virginia's government, may they share and work with Maryland's government to ensure the best treatment for mother nature, including teaching children in public schools to revere nature and be environmentalist. @jin54363 she means its the oldest religion found in Japan and considered a native religion only to Japan, Buddhism was later introduced from China+Korea, although it was slightly adapated to the Japanese way of life, as so it went hand in hand. Its also signifcant that many followers in Japan believed in both and would worship both in temples; such as a shinto follower to have a funeral in a buddhist temple, although they were still distinctly different religions and worshipped at differ altars

Well first off, it is not even a religion. It doesn't have strict guidelines for how to live your life in a moral way like a real religion. It merely gives people a way of life by saying that all things in nature have a spirit in them and should be respected. Second, it is the oldest spiritual idea in Japan. It has been around since about 2000 BCE.

This narration telles wrong thing. Shinto began in BC 5000 or more early during Jomon era.
Almost people misunderstand what Japan began in AD1. But until AD1, Jomon people had been continued to the AD. Namely, Jomon people had begun in BC10,000 and during 10,000
years many races came to Japan islans from northern asia like Sakhalin or from near Indonesia and micronesia. Southern people came to Japan by flowed raft or ship. Perhaps, almost people don't know the existence of fast runnig the black current of sea. It had brought
every thing from equator to Japan. Do you know why is Izumo taisha shrine or Ise shrine building structure similar to Indonesia traditional house? They came Japan.Japanese anscient culture was mixed together. In jomon era they built 48m height Izumo shrine. It has been proven by remains of Izumo shrine.
Shinto has no DOGMA, only making every thing clean and pure.
